The Self is always there. When have you ever noticed any less EXISTANCE or BEING? Second, what Nome says is that 'progress' really consists of letting go of 'ignorance' like misplaced ideas as to who we are and what is real and where happiness really come from. With each bit of dissolved ignorance comes more peace, freedom, space, love, etc. So progress is certainly not anything gained, it is rather just unneeded things going away, the clouds that block the sun being removed.
