Namaste:

Sage Ramalinga Swamigal is known mostly by the popular name, Vallalar

which means that he is a 'great giver.' Vallalar certainly was great

giver of tamil poems most of them are in praise of Shiva and Muruga

(Tamil name for Subramanya). Many of these poems have been sung by

millions of Tamilians across the globe. They are quite deep in the

expression of 'bhakti,' 'jnanam' and they insist on the importance

of high morals in the society.

Let me provide you my translation of one his poem to 'Muruga or

Kantha' (Lord Subramanya) situated in temple in Chennai, the capital

of Tamil Nadu, India. I am aware that translation of Vallalar's

verses is inadequate and do not convey the full meaning of his poem

coming from the bottom of his heart. My apologies for inadvertant

errors:

The first two verses of his poem in Tamil are provide first followed

by the translation of his entire poem:

Orumai udan ninaithu thirumalaradi ninaikindra uttamar tham uravu

Vendum;

Ul Ondru vaithu puram ondru pesuvar uravu kalavaami Vendum;

Translation of the entire poem:

Provide me the Satsangh of noble people whose mind is filled with

your thoughts; Help me to get rid of any association with those whose

speeches are contradictory to their thoughts (doubletalk!); Grace me

to speak your glory for ever and protect me free from false

pretences; Grant my body, mind and intellect to engage in ethical

activities and free the mind from entertaining devilish thoughts;

Fill my hearts with your grace to destroy my passions and focus my

thoughts always only on you; Shower your grace, keep my body, mind

and intellect strong and free from illness of all kind.

Warmest regards,

Ram Chandran
