This Sunday (6/19/94) is Sri periyaazvaar's thiru nakshatthiram.

The following is the ninth pasuram, dedicated to periyaazvaar,

in Swami Desikan's prabhandasaaram.

pEraNintha villiputthoo raani thanniR

In the above:

\bt

villiputthoo raani = villiputthoor aani (aani maatham)

peruNYsOthi = suvaathi (suvaathi nakshatthiram)

\et

This pasuram describes the occassion when periaazvaar won a bag of

gold coins in the court of the paandiyan king Srivallapa dEvan.

This occassion was marked by periyaazvaar singing the now well

known, "pallaaNdu pallaaNdu pallaayiratthaaNdu."

Note that a count of the number of pasurams attributed to periyaazvaar

is given at the end. This prabhandam contains one pasuram for

each aazvaar and one for Sri Ramanuja. Each pasuram gives the

count of the number of pasurams attributed to that particular aazvaar.

At the end, in two pasurams, the counts are summarized. Obviously, they

add up to 4000.

It is in this prabhandam that Swami Desikan proudly claims himself to be

thamizmaraiyOn!

If interested I can post the entire prabhandam (18 verses).

Regards,

P. Dileepan
