kalyaa

from trishatii bhaashhyam:

--------------------------

kalayituM dhyaatum yogyaa |

athavaa sarvottamadevatvena dhyaatum yogyaa kalyaaa |

kaleH kaamadhenutvena yathaa va~nchhitaartha kaaraNam.h ||

a) SHE is fit to be meditated upon. Not only that as the name kalavatii, she

assumes features in order to enable devotees to meditate on HER -- "...

bhakta dhyaanaaya asyaaH santiiti kalavatii |".

b) SHE being the supreme being (brahman/aatman) is fit to be meditated on.

It can be said SHE being the aatman, SHE alone is fit to be meditated upon.

c) One of the meanings of kali according to vyAkaraNa is that which grants

what is desired. SHE is like kAmadhenu who grants what is desired (and

needed). Hence, SHE is called kalyaa.

from LS

kalaasu saadhuH kalyaa | ...

bhaskararAya takes this name to mean as expert in different art forms.

Hence, one who posseses creative abilities. He then quotes from vishva kosha

different meanings such as dawn (ushhaH kaala), free from diseases,

kAdambarI, etc. and related that to her.

Some comments

In summary, the name means SHE who is fit to be meditated on. Often we are

lost in worldy thoughts and worries. At those moments, probably we should

ask whether these things are worth meditating upon. samsAra is duHkha, one

could be lost in it forever, if one were to take it very seriously.
