The 11th Chapter of DM deals with “ Devi Sthuthi “ wherein we get an insight of

the various forms of Ambaaji and so thought of compiling a mail on Her forms

which is discussed in this Chapter.

Before discussing it, I draw the attention of the devotees to certain shlokas of

the 4th Chapter of DM which says and is relevant –

……………………….“ That through Her Force all this world has been pervaded.

The infinite Lord Brahma and Shiva cannot adequately describe her glory and

strength.

How can we describe thy Form, which can’t be grasped in mind?

Thou art the cause of all worlds beyond the ken of perception of even Vishnu and

Shiva you are primordial, Un- manifest supreme ‘ Prakriti “ ………………..

The Paryanam of this great scripture confers the benefit equivalent to Chathur

Veda Parayanam . When the scripture itself Asserts that HER FORM cannot be

grasped even by the God’s, how can an ordinary mortal in a like me in a mail,

describe Her. Despite this an attempt is being made with all the sincerity of

Her blessings.

Short Notes on each Forms : -- additions Welcome

KATYAYANI :

As She was born to sage Kata as his daughter She is known that way. She is the

sum total of Tejas acquired from all Devaathas – (As per Vamana purana)

This is similar to the Mahalaksmi , who acquired in a similar manner the

pooling of the powers of Devas to kill the demon Mahishsua in DM – second

Chapter.

As per kaalika Purana she is the main deity of Odyana Peeta – a Shakthi peet .

Kam means the Brahman, as She creates and is also spread in her creation.

As per Maha swamy the local dialect in Tamil “ Kaathayee “ refers to Katyayani.

It is said that the gopies of Mathura worshipped Her to get Krishna as their

spouse.

If one refers to Devi Kavacham in DM – She is one of the names of Nava Durga (

the 6th one )

She is also the power of the gods and She is legionary aspect of Durga who

grants repose in Self Realisation.

MAYA DEVI

Devi’s power – Maya is the power of enchantment, the knowledge that the mind is

divorced from the reality, which keeps the whole creation in the grip of

limitation. This great power doesn’t affect her an iota, while it can retard an

ignorant Jiva from getting to know the reality. Like the dream or the indra jal

it produces unexpected results, when a jiva on account of ignorance takes to the

forms, names and pluralities as seen as REAL.

Maya leads to attachment, my-ness, I ness which was not in the deep sleep state

as there was no world and no attachment but only there was pure self but due to

maya devi in the wakeful state this manisfests. Also refer to LS 703

namavali.—Sarva Mohini. – she only gives the Moha and she only releases the jiva

from moha

When the Veil of Maya is lifted due to Maya Devi or Bhuvaneshwari’s grace , the

Advaita bhava descends on the jiva revealing the TRUTH of MAHA VAKYAS of the

Vedas , liberating him from the cycles of Birth and death. Muthu swamy Dikshatar

Kriti extolling Her as ‘ Maye ‘ is soul churning.

The Beejam – Hreem denotes her and is known as Maya Beeja which is also the

Saktha Pranava Mantra.

The DM describes beautifully in the First Chapter the power of Maha Maya drives

by sheer Force the Minds of even the JNANIES or the knowing ones and makes them

over to delusion. When this SO where are We as ordinary mortals.

Only by Maya devi’s grace the Mind would be drawn within and made free from

thoughts and merge in the heart and remain as Chit itself.

The great scripture DM when read with full Faith and devotion, for the eternal

devotees of Ambaaji , dawns the saving grace which shape the destiny of the

sadhak leading to the abandonment of the Ego ,dissolving the workings of karma

and SHE WOULD DESCEND AND RESIDE AS INTELLIGENCE IN THE HEART of sadhak as

confirmed by DM ( the shloka of DM “Sarvasya bhuddhi Rupena janasya hridi

samsthitae” )

Shiva here usually refers to Rudra and not to ParamaShiva who is

not different from Shakti/Lalita-Tripura-Sundari.

Namaste,

First of all thanks a lot to ganapathy-vijaya-ji for all

the information that they have shared with the list.

Here are some thoughts to ponder about regarding statements like:

"The infinite Lord Brahma and Shiva cannot adequately describe ..."

There are two things here 1. tattva and 2. a manifested being that

understands the tattva (a RShi of the tattva).

For e.g., there is vishnu tattva that is eternal. upendra, the son

of aditi and kashyapa, grasped this tattva better than anyone else,

and hence came to be called by the name of this tattva.

Regards,

Shrinivas Gadkari

The following story about Katyayani is found in the Mahatmya Khanda

of Tripura Rahasya:

In Dvapara-Yuga an asura named Aghasura, who is related to Kamsa,

along with Shumbha and Nishumbha after hearing about the death of

Kamsa, set out to avenge the daitya's death. In the process, they go

to Gokula with the intention of finding Krishna Bhagavan, and on

their failure to find him, they start destroying Gokula. After the

daityas arrest Nandaraja and Gopakanya-s, Yashoda and other Gopi-

s approach Katyayana muni. After hearing about Katyayani from

Katyayana muni, Yashoda worships Katyayani after which, Katyayani

appears mounted on a Lion, in Katyayana muni's ashrama.

After fighting the daityas and releasing Nandaraja and others,

She sets out to destroy the three daityas. These daityas run away in

three different directions. One towards Jahnavi(Ganga), another

towards caves in the Vindhya mountains. Katyayani assumes three

forms to destroy these three. One form enters Devaki and destroys

Nishumbha. In the form of Kali, She destroys all their army. Shumbha

is destroyed on the banks of Ganga. When prayed by devatas, She

stays in those three different places. One of those places is

Vindhya mountains which is why Katyayani is praised as Vindhyavasini.

Above story is also acknowledged in the "Pradipa" commentary on

Saptashati.
