Sub : Devi upasana and the Four Navathries

The material wealth and prosperity which an ordinary mortal like me seek most of

the time in this ever competitive world, stupefy my mind and make me forget the

superimposed truth that I am in ever in the Jaws of Death. Despite this I

continue to do the same thing again like a mad man , even understanding that

there is no real gain in this impermanent human world in such actions.

Luckily , due to the supreme grace of Devi, in an attempt to come out of the

ignorance which is the root cause of I-ness or the Jiva Ahankara causing bondage

of endless birth and death, we have been fortunate to seek a “GURU” well versed

in Vedas and who is always absorbed in the ‘Devi Consciousness’.

Equipped with the Saligrama (Sa—Sankarsana (MahaVishnu),Li—Linga

(siva),Ga—Ganesha,Ra—Ravi (Soorya),Ma—Mathaji (lalitha Bhavani) and the potent

Beeja mantras obtained with Guru Krupa, I try to find time to do the daily

japa, the puja and recognise that the time is always insufficient. However the

weekly off which falls on a Friday is a big blessing for somewhat better

Sadhana. In this process we slowly and steadily ever hope and pray to Devi to

give us the required Bhakti as said in LS “ BHAKTI PRIYA “. To gain the Supreme

Self Knowledge and to get released from Samsara Chakra, Bhakti is the most

important equipment. It is said about Devi upasana that even though one may miss

the ultimate target in this birth, in the next birth one continues to grow

spiritually and materially from the same status of where the upasaka left his

mortal coil in the last birth and does not go down the ladder.

The Navarathries are very special occasions to us as for any Devi’s devotee,

which we look forward for intense Sadhana. The very feeling that these 9 days

are very auspicious intensely motivates and energise us to prepare and plan for

the 9 days and the time is well spent during these days.

The four Navarathries falls generally as under :

1. Shyamala Navarathri -- Dec—Jan

2. Vasanta Navarathri -- Mar -- April

3. Vaaraahi Navarathri -- July

4. Sarada Navarathri -- Sept—Oct

While the Vasanta and Sarada Navarathries are extremely popular and widely

celebrated in the four corners of the GLOBE , the other two Viz . Shyamala and

Vaarahi does not seem to be either well known or popular.

I would like to know what our scriptures and legends talk about these two

Navarathries. Can Any Member enlighten us and the significance ?

Members would be perhaps aware of the New year Commencing , with the SHYAMALA

NAVARATHRI starting from 3rd JAN 2003.

the four navarAtris are respectively in chaitra, aashhaaDa,

aashvina, and maagha.

On Jan 3rd 2003 is the beginning of paushyami maasa and maagha maasa

starts only on Feb 2nd 2003(timing may be off by a day for different

parts of the globe, as thithi is a geocentric phenomena and the

tithi of the day is the tithi that reigns during sunrise).

It is best to think of these in actual chandraamaana months rather

than December, January, etc. This essential because the dates are

determined based on chandramaana calendar.
