Yoga After Pregnancy??

Hi Linda

I had two c-sections & was told by my doctor not to practice until 6 weeks after

giving birth. 4 weeks for vaginal birth. 11 days is very early. Your body has

been through alot and this may be a good time to rest, mediate & walk!

Congratulations! My baby is almost 2 years old now, and this is what I did .

The postpartum period is a very important time to take your rest as if you don't

rest you can have negative repercussions in your health and energy level that

could last years. I spent the 1st 2 weeks at home in bed on the advice of

midwives. Our western society doesn't support rest and restoration very

much, but it is very important. I started back into asana at about 1 month and

slowly worked back into doing primary series again. It will take a while to

develop that core strength again. The flexibility comes back fast but the

strength takes a while. As my core strength came back ( and I'm talking several

months to a year) I started to do intermediate series again. Also be aware of

weakness in the pelvic floor , take it slow and do what feels right.

Thanks for the advice from everyone regarding practice after giving birth!!!

I guess I was feeling a bit too anxious to get back into practice. Now I

realize that it is better to rest and take care of my little girl for a

couple of more weeks before gently getting back into my practice.

 

I guess I still have a lot to learn about patience :-) Although, my baby

is helping me with that!

I also gave birth recently - about three weeks ago.

My baby was born via c-section, and though the

conventional wisdom is to take 6-8 weeks off, my

Doctor actually gave me the green light already to

start a light practice. I also consulted on this with

a friend who is a (many years practicing) ashtangi and

an ob/gyn and father of three, and he concurred that a

light practice should be ok. I of course understand

the importance of rest, and certainly my first two

weeks post-partum were mostly spent with my feet up.

That said, for me the responsibilities of motherhood

are that much easier to handle if I can take a little

time daily for myself. Im not sure this is right for

everyone, but certainly I have found in the last week

that I have been doing just sun salutations and

standing asanas, I feel much much better. At least

from my experience 30-60 minutes of light asana

practice has made my back less tired, and has allowed

me to be more centered and focussed on my baby during

the rest of the day.

 

I know many people wont agree with this, but perhaps

you can look at it another way: I know women who

practice all during pregnancy, and others who have to

stop very early on - it is INDIVIDUAL. As such, my

feeling is that post-partum practice is also

individual. Mind you Im not talking about resuming a

stront asana practice, but rather very slow, no

jumping, easy practice. The walking also helps a lot,

though where I live (NYC) it is just too hot some days

to take an infant out, and if you are breastfeeding,

it is hard to go out alone and go much further than a

few blocks from home...

 

I hope this helps, I think you have to find what works

best for you - if you feel tired, rest, but if you

like me feel the need to move your body a bit, then at

least from the advice I have received, a light

practice is ok...
