A 12 x 800 meter workout is probably anerobic for

most folks unless there is an adequate recovery

between repeats. In a similar fashion, a practitioner

moving through the A series, will move to the anerobic

side without deep controlled breathing and the bandhas

intact. Discover these things in practice and "theory"

will no longer be a part of the equation. Deep

breathing leads to purification. Vital capacity can then

only increase. yours in yoga.

I think the aerobic benefits of Astanga are

sufficient for good health, though perhaps not sufficient as

a substitute for the same aerobic capacity and

endurance that one would get through track running,

full-court basketball, soccer, wrestling, judo, wrestling, or

any number of other intense activities.

One of

the main questions though, IMO, is whether more is

better in respect to aerobics. I think it was BKS

Iyengar that claimed running is actually more irritating

than beneficial to the cardio system. I read this some

20 years ago, and was pretty skeptical of this view

being that popular opinion of the time held that

running was just plain good for you.

But lots of

athletes and runners still get serious heart disease. Not

to mention the injuries to bone and sinew that seem

to be unavoidable to the long term runner (one

reason I gave up running etc for yoga -- but that's just

me).

Much depends on a person's constitution no doubt as to

what's good for you and what's not. But I have to say

that I no longer feel that intense aerobics is as

beneficial as was once thought.
