In one of his posts, Shri harsha talks about 'sandhya bhasha' -the

twilight language of tantra...

What is this 'sandhya bhasha' ?

Tntra uses language and imagery to convey not 'ordinary' meanings

but 'esoteric' and 'metaphysical' truths... so much so that what

seems as 'profanity' is often a 'profound' concept...

THUS, DOES 'COiTUS' MEAN 'SEXUAL INTERCOURSE." ?

does YONI MEAN A FEMALE 'BIRTH' CANAL ..

DO DEVI'S BREASTS MEAN HER PHYSICAL BREASTS ? or the moon and the

sun? ha and tha ?

what do 'semen' and 'menstrual blood' stand for in yoni tantra?

any word in tantra is linked to a complex network of other words with

profound metaphysical meanings...

THE TANTRIKS USE SANDHYA BHASHA (AKA AS INTENTIONAL SPEECH) TO CONVEY

ESOTERIC TRUTHS NOT INTELLIGIBLE TO THE LAY READER AT FIRST GLANCE-

the meanings of these words can only be understood by direct

experience or through sadhana under the guidance of a tantrik

adept...

so, the mundane 'sex' act becomes 'sacred ' when it transcends

everyday use of that phrase...

infact, sufis as well as tamil siddas use this 'twilight language'

also quite effectively...

when a sufi talks of 'wedding night' -it is not the meeting of a

bride and a groom on their wedding night- but the merging of

the 'jivatma' (individual soul) with the paramatma (the divine soul.)

The 'beloved' also refers to the divine...

The tamil siddhas also emply a language called 'shunya sambhasyanai"

(a dialogue with emptiness.)

If penkatali is reading this post, I would request him to elaborate

on the use of 'twilight' language in sufism and by tamil siddars...

Twilight language is "a secret, dark, ambiguous language in which a

state of consciousness is expressed by an erotic term and the

vocabulary of mythology or cosmology is charged with Hatha-yogic or

sexual meanings."

THIS IS EVIDENT IN THE WORKS OF KANHAPADA , BAUL SONGS, TAGORE'S

POETRY ETC.... i invite our colin to some light on this,...

here is an example from Thirumular'sc (thirumanthiram) wherethe poet

describes devotee's Union with the absolute...

On the Peaked Mountain is a Summit High,

Beyond the Summit blows a Gusty Wind;

There blossomed a Flower that its fragrance spread

Within that Flower, a Bee its Nectar imbibed,

explanation...

The gusty wind of the controlled breath spreads the fragrance of the

Sahasraara lotus at the crown of the head in which the Lord as a tiny

bumble bee sits, lapping up the nectar of immortality. The image of

the mountain usually infers the body seated in meditation or the

central nadi Shashumna through which the kundalini shakti flows.

Tirumular expresses the subtle character of the Srividya mantra or

Paanchadaasakshaari, by coloring the three sets of letters that

comprises her 15 syllables.

The letter ka and five letters are golden colored.

The letter a [i.e. ha] and the six are red in color.

The four letters beginning with ca [i.e. sa] are pure white.

The three vidyaas [i.e, kuutas] beginning with ka give desired

liberation.

The golden colored five letters beginning with ka are of course "ka

ye ee la hrim".

The six red letters are "Ha sa ka ha la hrim".

The white letters beginning with sa are "Sa ka la hrim". This is the

pAnchadAsakshAri, the fifteen syllabled mantra.

now, in tantric literature, one will come across this verse....

"Inserting his organ into his mother's womb squeezing his sister's

breasts and putting his feet on his guru's head... He will be reborn

no more. "

now, folks, what does this mean?

doe it sound vulgar to you? is it not obscene? is tantra advocating

incest? if you take the literal meaning of this verse, that is what

it sounds like, does it not?

THE ORGAN HERE STANDS FOR THE CONTEMPLATING MIND.

The mother's womb is the triangle at the root chakra.

The sister's breasts are the heart chakra and the 3rd eye

And the guru's head is the 1000 petalled lotus at the crown.

it is advocated again and again, one must study 'tantra' under the

guidance of an initiated guru belonging to a tantric lineage -

otherwise e will all be groping in the dark thinking 'tantra' is

advocating 'promiscuity' and 'unlimited sex'....

sandhya bhasha is also used effectively in zen koans and in haiku

poetry and in taoism and vajrayana buddhism...

based on a web source by anjaneya...

i hope other learned mmbers will come forward and elaborate on the

twilight language of tantra...

love ...
