Guest guest Report post Posted June 29, 2001 Fraser Island Dingoes I am forwarding this in the hope that it will have some positive effect. Instructions for completing the petition are at the bottom of this message. If you decide not to forward this, please send it back to me. This is an actual petition, and " signatures " will be lost if you drop the line. After the sudden death of Clinton Gage at Fraser Island on Monday 30th April the Queensland Government have instantly ordered for culling of the dingoes to begin. Up to 28 dingoes so far at Fraser Island have been shot and disposed of. Queensland Premier Peter Beattie claiming " it is simply unacceptable for dingoes to be cohabitating or living anywhere in or near camps or towns " (Herald Sun, 3/5/00) has ordered the culling. Wouldn't it be the other way around, " unacceptable for humans to be cohabitating the dingoes natural habitat areas " such as Fraser Island and also Kakadu? " We want nature on our terms. We want to be able to feed wildlife-but if they hurt us, kill it " (Biologist Tim Low, Saturday Age 5/5/00). Years of human contact has altered the dingoes temperament, erasing their fear of humans and introducing competition and aggression into their psyche. This is a tragic situation, but we do have to remember it is due to humans feeding the dingoes, which has changed their natural eating and social habits. Visitor numbers to Fraser Island have increased from less than 100,000 in 1980 to 312,000 in 1999-2000 (stated by Fraser Island draft report). Even though there is the appropriate warning signs around Fraser Island people are still arriving without knowing the proper behaviour towards dingoes. Is the answer to this issue simply to lower the numbers of visitors or to stop visitors all together to Fraser Island completely and allow the dingoes to roam and live in their natural habitat as it was before humans came to the mainland? A partial cull has begun, and a risk assessment is due to be finished in the next month to decide whether all dingoes on the island will be destroyed. Culling all or some of the dingoes simply is not the solution for controlling the issue and needs to be stopped before they unfortunately become another one of our native animals on the endangered species list.
