Hi.

It is a very interesting discussion; I am taurus lagna

and have Saturn as out and out yogakarka; however,

still i think the Saturn Mahadasha had given me very

very mediocre results. I asked many astrologers,

nobody could give me any plausible explanation;

Jagannath saheb's explanation appeared to be a bit

convincing--in his analysis he had said that Saturn

did not give you good results because though being

yogakarka, it is also badhkesh----so there you go.

Well, anyways, I am posting my birth details for your

reflections:

Date of Birth: June 1, 1966

Place of Birth: Baraut (40 kms North of Delhi)

Time of Birth: 5.35 AM

Dear Souravji,

You have raised very thought provoking and pertinent questions in

your post.Whenever something troubles - acts like a bee in the bonnet-

it is good for running around for finding answers. About 3 months

back I had posted a query on charakaraka replacements in one of the

forums. The gurus refused to give a straight reply. As a result I had

to run all over the place to understand what it meant. Now the

meaning is somewhat clear though I still would like to know more

about it.

The question of badhakesh and badhak planets has been in my mind too.

Why is it that only fixed signs have yogakaraka planets as badhakesh?

Then there is the question that Mars is exalted in Capricorn and also

the badhakesh for this sign. It is also interesting to note that dual

signs are badhakesh to each other which reminds one about the story

of how Mercury was born.Also it is said that Jupiter and Mercury are

the two planets which are important for study of astrology but one

does not understand why they should be badhakesh to each other.

I don't know how much time it will take to get the answers to the

questions that have been posed. But the more bees there are in the

bonnet the more crazy we get to find the answers.

Namaste,

Just to provoke the thought further. Dr. Charak does not use bhadhaka.

In his books he mentions it and then dismisses it.

Jyoish has many such caveats and it is no simple matter to understand

what is really menat by these and debates will go ad infinitum as each

will present a case to support their interpretation.

Looking at bhadhak definition, for kubha lagan shukra the great friend

of shani will become bhadhka. For simha mangal will become bhadhaka.

I think looking at the state of the yogakaraka himself will suffice.

if the said graha is without afflictions etc..good results will

follow, if weak the dahsa won't be spectacular. Some bad effects may

be felt ifd it is afflicted.

I agree fully. Also, I feel that badhaka should be seen more for placement than

lordship. Then, it is only one factor. This alone can never change the

potential significantly. Reason lies elsewhere. Adding subtleties, it may give

good results.

Namaste,Just to provoke the thought further. Dr. Charak does not use bhadhaka.In

his books he mentions it and then dismisses it.Jyoish has many such caveats and

it is no simple matter to understandwhat is really menat by these and debates

will go ad infinitum as eachwill present a case to support their

interpretation.Looking at bhadhak definition, for kubha lagan shukra the great

friendof shani will become bhadhka. For simha mangal will become bhadhaka.I

think looking at the state of the yogakaraka himself will suffice.if the said

graha is without afflictions etc..good results willfollow, if weak the dahsa

won't be spectacular. Some bad effects maybe felt ifd it is afflicted....On Apr

Dear Praveen Sir, below is my career graph in

netshell:

Please ignore the typos because I am writing the

following piece very furiously.....

In my first year of BSc, I had joined NCC Airwing; in

the first year itself, I had received my first rank.

In the second year of BSc, which is also the second

year of NCC, I had cleared my Pilot Aptitude Battery

Test (PABT)---this is mandatory to join Indian

Airforce, and it is the test that one can take only

once in your life time, if you fail, you can’t become

a pilot in IAF. Based on my performance in PABT, I was

selected for flying training at the local flying club.

We were just five cadets selected from all over the

state NCC for the flying training. I completed my

flying training and subsequently acquired Private

Pilot License (PPL). This was in 1989. It was the time

when Rajiv Gandhi who was himself an aviation buff,

had started Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy

(IGRUA)—this was a very prestigious academy from where

pilots were to be drawn for the then three airlines of

the country—Air India, Indian Airlines and Vayudoot.

Since civil aviation was better, in terms of money and

overall life, I decided to try for IGRUA. The

pre-requisite for this academy was PPL and a BSc

degree; I passed the entrance three times in a row;

however, never could clear the entrance. The academy,

as it was said, was meant for the children of senior

commanders of airlines, and Rajiv Gandhi had opened it

for the sake of his buddies children. Well, be that as

it may be, the bottom line is that I was just left

very very frustrated. I hailed from a very mediocre

background, and becoming an airline pilot was the only

way for me to break the shackles of middle class

life’s drudgery. The failure had a very adverse impact

on other aspects of my life. I don’t want to get into

all that at this forum; suffice it say that I was left

all alone. My Shani Mahadasha was at its peak. So much

for Shani Mahadasha !

Later, something had to be done for livelihood; so one

of my friends got me a job as a trainer reporter with

a provincial daily in Nagpur. Initial days in

journalism were nightmarish to say the least. However,

after the initial struggle, I started to progress

gradually. Eventually, I went on to join The Times of

India (Pune Edition)—the dream newspaper for any

journalist. During my journalism days, I received lot

of accolades and respect from my peers. I was

considered as a very good reporter. Worked very hard.

I tried to translate my rage (rage for not being able

to make it to aviation) into brute hard work in

journalism. In fact, when I had joined The Times of

India, my stories had left the Pune journalistic

fraternity just stunned with some of my stories. In

short, I managed to command lot of respect from my

colleagues and coworkers. However, my rise in the

editorial hierarchy in Times was excruciatingly slow.

If on one hand, I was happy to command so much of

respect from my colleagues in Times, on the other I

was very frustrated with not getting any promotion.

In the meantime, I had applied for Canadian

immigration, and came to Canada on May 24th 2000. I

finished my Shani Mahadasha in last year. Now, I am

working as a technical writer with a middle-sized

software company. I had to do a full-time one year

course in technical writing in Canada to make

transition from journalism to technical writer.

The other issue is I got married very late—on May 5th

2001. Never got any thing materialized. It was

everyone liked me, but nobody loved me J Well, it may

be because of Ketu in seventh house and Venus in

parivartan with Mars in 12th house.

I guess Mercury would be my last Mahadasha; I won’t

survive Ketu Mahadasha !. So in short this is my

career autobiography.

Dear Kapisthalam-ji,

Namaskar. Thank you for your references and

arguments which are meant to make this discussion fruitful and

informative. Your e-mail also gives be opportunity to strengthen my

argument as below.

1. I don't think you have quite understood my point. Kindly read my

email once more. First, I am refering to Badhakesha which means the

lord of the obstructing house for a given sign/house. Every sign

(lets call it a reference sign) has a badhaka sign. For Movable

signs it is 11-th from it, for Fixed it is 9th from it, for Dual it

is 7-th from it. These houses and the lords of these houses will

create disturbances for the said reference sign. It is said that the

badhaka mal-significances are due to the past bad karma and hence

should also relate to D-60 chart. Second, in Prasna Marga (I refer

to Dr. B. V. Raman's Translation), it is said that depending on the

aspect ( 1/3, 1/2, full etc) the amount/degree of obstruction is

also to be noted. Third, the planets in the quadrants (Vishnu

sthanas) to the Badhakesha for our reference sign will contribute to

the said ill effect of the badhakesha.

The Badhaka of a house may have other significances as a planet lord

of its own houses. But when we call it badhakesha we are refering to

the negative connotations of that planet because of being a

Badhakesh; there are other significances possible and they may be

auspicious.

Just to reiterate, each sign has a badhaka. For a natives horoscope,

the commonly refered 'badhaka' is the badhaka of the 1st house

because 1st house signifies the general self. But for more detailed

considerations, badhaka of each other houses should be considered.

Let me call Badhaka of the n-th house as B-n.

I would again refer you to the articles of Guru Pandit Rath and Guru

Gauranga Das: (below).

Judging by all this, B-1 in the 5-th house (intelligence/emotion)

afflicts that particular house. Thus there is no benefic effect to

be expected for a B-1 in any house especially if it aspects the 1st

house. Some frustration of varying degree will be observed.

2. Let me take up your recent and earlier statement. You stated and

I quote: " ...If "Badhakadhipathy" is placed in five or nine in

strength then he contributes strenth to support longevity ..." In

your subsequent e-mail you stated that wife's ( and not the

native's ) life is prolonged. These two statements are

contradictory.

(a) You are not talking about Badhakesh (B-1). You are talking about

B-7. My previous statements were for B-1 which is what is commonly-

refered to as Badhakesh.

(b) You are saying B-7 in 5H is good for wife's longivity but

nothing is stated for the native himself. My previous statements

were for the native himself as we are principally concerned with him

Thus B-7 in 5th house is not of any benific significance to the

native directly.

3. Let me understand the example given referenced by you from Sapta

Rishi Nadi. I do not have the book so I cannot refer to it. Hence I

am solely refering to what you have written. It would help if you

can copy ditto the text portion relevant.

(a) Man's perspective: From the perspective of the Lagna of the

Native, 7H is strong with Su, Me, Ve in Scorpio. Su is Lord of 4H

(Sukha) Me is the Lord of the 2H (Family) and 5H (Poorva punya) and

Venus is the Langa lord.

B-7 is Moon in the 5H. Moon doesn't aspect 7H. So badhaka

activity is not strong.Further, with aspect of Saturn on Moon

(Saturn's aspects have a shrinking effect) hence Badhakesh troubles

for 7H significances i.e. related to wife and marriage are lessened.

The native has a Taurus Lagna so B-1 is Lord of Capricorn i.e.

Saturn. Saturn in not having any full aspect on the Lagna. However,

Saturn is a dire natural malefic and hence the Badhaka effect is not

so insignificant.

The only negative effect is that Venus is the 6th lord of

obstacles and 7H co-lord is located in Dusthana, giving troubles in

marriage from the perspective of the native. ( but not necessarily

the health of the wife ! )

(b) Wife's perspective: From the perspective of the wife, let us

take the 7H of the man's chart as her Lagna. It has two co-lords Ma

and Ke (here lets consider both co-lords, although Ke dominated as

the lord as it has the 5th aspect of Ju; Ma has none of the aspects

of Ju/Me/its dispositor). Ma is co-lord in the second house

aspecting the 8H of longivity (good). Ke is other

co-lord in the 4H (sukha) with its dispositor Sa in the 9H (again,

good). Thus both co-lords of the Lagna are in sound position. Sun is

10L in Lagna giving Simhasana yoga which is good. Me and Ve are 8L

and 12L, allowing Vipareeta Rajayoga. Ve is also 7L in Lagna giving

fame. Thus Lagna and Lagna Lords are all decently fortified ensuring

good health.

This is of course all subject to my limited understanding. However,

hope this helps.

Adding my own 2 cents here, why Shani did not give results in 11th

house for Taurus lagna

Point 1: Look at Shani's position in D9 (Manoj Sharma's horoscope).

It is placed in 6th from rasi position. This gives hard work/limited

results (one Maharashatra Astrolger said Shani is 3,11 is better

than 6). It is 6th from moon in D9 and 3rd from D9 lagna (better)

Point 2: In Rasi, from Moon, Shani is in 6th adding to the hard

work/frustrations with limited results.

Point 3: Add to this another point -Shani is in its own nakshatra.

Point 4: Yet another point of 6th house shani giving limted results

is (assuming time is correct) that Shani is in 6th house of D10.

Looking from various angles, Shani's "6th house" effect is

dominating, even though it is YK for Taurus lagna and well placed in

11th house.

quadrants (Vishnu sthanas) to the Badhakesha for our reference sign will

contribute to the said ill effect of the badhakesha.The Badhaka of a house may

have other significances as a planet lord of its own houses. But when we call

it badhakesha we are refering to the negative connotations of that planet

because of being a Badhakesh; there are other significances possible and they

may be auspicious.Just to reiterate, each sign has a badhaka. For a natives

horoscope, the commonly refered 'badhaka' is the badhaka of the 1st house

because 1st house signifies the general self. But for more detailed

considerations, badhaka of each other houses should be considered. Let me call

Badhaka of

the n-th house as B-n.I would again refer you to the articles of Guru Pandit

Rath and Guru Gauranga Das: (below).Judging by all this, B-1 in the 5-th house

(intelligence/emotion) afflicts that particular house. Thus there is no benefic

effect to be expected for a B-1 in any house especially if it aspects the 1st

house. Some frustration of varying degree will be observed.2. Let me take up

commonly-refered to as Badhakesh.(b) You are saying B-7 in 5H is good for

wife's

longivity but nothing is stated for the native himself. My previous statements

were for the native himself as we are principally concerned with himThus B-7 in

5th house is not of any benific significance to the native directly.3. Let me

understand the example given referenced by you from Sapta Rishi Nadi. I do not

have the book so I cannot refer to it. Hence I am solely refering to what you

have written. It would help if you can copy ditto the text portion relevant.(a)

Man's perspective: From the perspective of the Lagna of the Native, 7H is strong

with Su, Me, Ve in Scorpio. Su is Lord of 4H (Sukha) Me is the Lord of the 2H

(Family) and 5H (Poorva punya) and Venus is the Langa lord.B-7 is Moon in the

5H. Moon doesn't aspect 7H. So badhaka activity is not strong.Further, with

aspect of Saturn on Moon (Saturn's aspects have a shrinking effect) hence

Badhakesh troubles for 7H significances i.e. related to wife

and marriage are lessened.The native has a Taurus Lagna so B-1 is Lord of

Capricorn i.e. Saturn. Saturn in not having any full aspect on the Lagna.

However, Saturn is a dire natural malefic and hence the Badhaka effect is not

so insignificant.The only negative effect is that Venus is the 6th lord of

from the perspective of the native. ( but not necessarily the health of the

wife ! )(b) Wife's perspective: From the perspective of the wife, let us take

the 7H of the man's chart as her Lagna. It has two co-lords Ma and Ke (here

lets consider both co-lords, although Ke dominated as the lord as it has the

5th aspect of Ju; Ma has none of the aspects of Ju/Me/its dispositor). Ma is

co-lord in the second house aspecting the 8H of longivity (good). Ke is other

co-lord in the 4H (sukha) with its dispositor Sa in the 9H (again, good). Thus

both

co-lords of the Lagna are in sound position. Sun is 10L in Lagna giving

Simhasana yoga which is good. Me and Ve are 8L and 12L, allowing Vipareeta

Rajayoga. Ve is also 7L in Lagna giving fame. Thus Lagna and Lagna Lords are

all decently fortified ensuring good health. This is of course all subject to

Dear friends,

One thing which is becoming clear is that it is the placement of the

badhakesh in the chart which assumes some significance. Now should

the placement not be seen mainly in the D-1 chart from lagna rather

than the moon??? (am not clear about this). Placement of Shani in

Taurus Lagna in 11 th house owned by Jupiter may give mixed results.

But shani in exaltation in the house of Venus in 6th is supposed to

be "amrit" in the words of Rathji becauses it is a malefic in the

house of enemies (representing victory over them) and has 3rd, 7th

and 10th drishti on some of the dusthana and upachaya houses (8th,

12th and 3rd) which is also very good.

This is just to emphasise that it is the placement of Badhakesh which

perhaps is more important than lordship of badhak sthan. (Now that

Kanu Priya has kind of jolted my memory about the class of Rathji on

this subject these things are coming back to me). The other thing

that I seem to recall is that if there is a planet in the badhak

sthan then the houses that that planet owns could act as hindrances. B

One word please.Mere theoretical discussion finally lands people into endless

controversies.Isnt it so.

I already discussed the possible results which Rahu may yield for your good

self.Rahu dasa is from 10-7-1994 to 10-7-2012.Ketu bhukthi is in progress. The

dates are between 8-1-2005 and 26-1-2006.

Rahu migh have been giving results such as pertaing to your father,visits to

hol;y shrines, meeting preceptors,wealth etc etc.Travel abroad might have been

one of the results.Ketus period is not at all satisfactory.?
