Sri Padmanabhan svami,

 

A beautiful discovery of the instance of one savant-sage, AzhvAr, adopting another's sacred text.

 

And, such discovery could have come only from someone like Sri kAyiRampEDu vAsudevan svAmi who, so young in years, is yet an amazing adept in the entirety of aruLi-c-cheyal corpus.

 

The kAnchi mahAtmA prativAdi-bhayankaram aNNangarAchArya svami of revered memory used to delight in devising divya-prabandha quizzes. How I wish this precious soul were with us here to-day to bless Sri Vasudevan and yourself in person !

 

Literature of diverse climes all over the world has recorded such inter-adoption of one poet's text by another, as a euphoric tribute to the source from which such text is adopted.

 

Shakespeare has immortalised Marlowe's line of classical simplicity, Who loved that loved not at first sight ?

 

The unsurpassed Kamba Ramayanam (sundara-kANDam) has this verse composed as seetA-pirATTi's nostalgia ~~

 

"Azha-neer-k-kanGai ambi kaDAviya

Ezhai-vEDanukku, embi ninn tambi, nee

tOzhan, manGai kozhundi, ena-c-chonna

vAzhi naNbinai unni mayanGuvAL."

 

This verse is a word-for-word transfer from tirumanGai mannan's periya-tirumozhi (5-8-1) on Srirangam, "Ezhai Edalan, keezh-magan ennAdu iranGi..."

 

The beautiful Sanskrit kAvyam, Ramayana-manjari, of the Kashmir poet, kshEmEndra, contains in his own delicate settings several gem-like phrases extracted from Sri-Ramayana.

 

Tirumangai-Azhvar's tiru-k-kuRun-tANDakam verse (No.13) reproduces the later two lines of toNDar-aDi-p-poDigaL's tiru-mAlai verse (No.17) ~

 

"Surumbu amar SOlai Soozhnda

aranGa-mA-kOyil koNDa

karumbinai-k-kaNDu-koNDu enn

kaN-iNai kaLikkumARE."

 

The sacred work, Guru-paramparA-prabhAvam of pinnbazhagia-perumAL-jeeyar, contains a nugget of episode of how tirumanGai and toNDar-aDi-p-poDigaL had met. As the former progressed with the monumental project of raising the fortress walls of the Great Temple of Srirangam, he halted at where toNDar used to sit for knitting the flower garland for periya perumAL. The wall could obviously not run through this venerated site, and tirumanGai took a circuiting. In appreciation of the gesture, toNDar adoringly called his own garden-knife aruL-mAri, after tirumanGai.

 

The AzhvAr saints spoke with one voice ~ pESiRRE pESum Eka-kanThargal !

Mr Sundararajan's treatment of Sri Vasudevan's observations are enjoyable. Especially where he compares the duo Marlowe vs Shakespeare while highlighting how Tirumangai Mannan has cherished in his Opus some couplets from Thondaradippodi, Mr Sundararajan's focusing is enjoyable.
