Dear Sri Narasimhan :

MaviLai ThOraNams are hung at the entrance in halls

of marriage for the couple to be blessed with lots of

Children ( Suprajaa) .It is an ancient custom .

Mango Tree is a symbol of Love and Mango Fruits are

considered as favorite fruits of DevAs .

Certain amount of sacredness associated with Mango Leaves

over the years has led to its use Udhaka Saanthi ,PuNYAhAvAchanam

for ProkshaNam .

There are some medicinal properties for Mango leaves

that we wont go into here .

Respected swamis, Mavilai Thoranam : Kavi Chakravarthi in his kavi nayam in Ramayanam. According to Kamban in his Ramayana : When Sri Raman entered into Ayodhi, every where mavilai thoranam was hanged by the people of Ayodhya, it moves front and back in the air. It appears that mavilai thoranam invites Sri Rama and others for Thirumalaigai. That is why, the mavilai thoranam is most important for us also, if we celebrate any function in our house. That Mavilai thoranam will invite every friends and relatives by moving front and back.
