Guest guest Report post Posted March 18, 2007 - raghunathan r Oppiliappan Thursday, March 15, 2007 7:19 PM Panguni Uttiram Swamin, What is the significance of Panguni Uttiram? Can any of the learned Swamins explain in detail as to why we celebrate Panguni Uttiram? Dear Sriman RaghunAthan Swamy : Panguni Utthiram ( Meena Maasa Utthara Phalguni ) is celebrated by VaishNavAs as the avathAra dinam of MahA Lakshmi from the Milky Ocean during the churning for nectar ( amrutha MaTanam) . It is not that Mahaa Lakshmi did not exist before . She is always with the Lord in an eternal sense .This avathAram as AakAra Thraya Sampannai was to wed the Lord . Many PurANams including Srimath BhAgavatham celebrate this avathAram as a part of Amrutha MaTanam . The other significant event associated with this day is the avthAram of the three Gadhyams by AchArya RaamAnuja and His performance of SaraNAgathi during the sErthi sEvai of the dhivya dampathis at SrIrangam . AchArya RaamAnujaa showed us the way to perform SaraNAgathy to the dhivya dampathis for gainign Moksha phalan . I also want to know the real import of Mattai Adi Utsavam that day? Could the event have been real? It is a special event at Srirangam , where the human emotions behind Oodal_Koodal ( VislEsham-SamsLEsham) are injected to enjoy the Vaibhavam of the Dhivya Dampathis . It is an uthsavam to highlight the kapada Naatakam of the Lord and the legitimate anger of Sri RanganAyaki , the role of Arayars and Swamy NammAzhwArs to intervene " to unite " the dhivya dampathis ( sErthi) and bless us . It is made colorful thru the enactment of the drama to indicate event he dhivya dampathis are not above human emotions as a dampathi . It is an occasion to highlight the UrayUr Dhivya dEsam , the birth place of ThiruppANAzhwAr . Could God indulge in the kind of activity he is alleged to have? If one looks at it as a colorful uthsavam to teach some values , it is perfectly acceptable . We do not need to look more into this from a point of justification or ethical behavior . Many chEshtais of Baala GopAlan celebrated in AzhwAr Paasurams ( PeriyAzhwAr) will come under the same category . It has to be taken as an anubhavam in my humble opinion . I shall be grateful if I can be enlightened. Guest guest Report post Posted March 18, 2007 Respected Swamin The events about panguni uthiram. Incidentally perhaps we may add that panguni uthiram also is noted for Sri Aandal Thirukkalyanam and the big ther (cart) of Sri Aandal at Srivililputtur. Guest guest Report post Posted March 19, 2007 SRI : || PraNAmam to all The BhAgavathAs. As narrated by our AchAryAs and Elders, The Panguni Uthiram day is an auspicious one for the following reasons: 1) It was because of Pangni Uthiram Day, Vibhishana, who was carrying the " SRI RANGA NIDHI" - The NampermAl, Lord Sri Ranganatha, given to him as gift by Lord Sri Ramachandra after His Pattabhishekam to LankApuri, had to place it at The Present island Location of SRI RANGAM between the holy rivers - Cauvery & Kollidam for performing the Uthsvam due on that day. VibhishanA cud not lift The PerumAl later and hence Lord Sri RanganAthA has made Sri Rangam as His Permanent Abode - The Bhooloka Vaikuntam. According to our AchAryAs, this is a predesigned act of The Lord to make Sri Rangam as His Eternal Abode to Bless the people in His ArchA Form. It is due to this we are today Blessed to have our Lord Sri RanganAthA at Sri Rangam - The Nithya VibhUthi in The LeelA VibhUthi. 2) It was on this Auspicious Panguni Uthiram Day, Swami Ramanuja, surrendered at The Feet of The Divya Dhampathies,Sri Ranga NachiyAr & Lord Sri RanganAthA , when they were together (SERTHI - The One Day in the year when The Divine Couple in Archai Form at Sri Rangam give Sevai together to their BhaktAs) , by composing and reciting "Gadhya Thrayam", an unparrelelled work on SARANAGATHI - Total Surrender, by Swami Ramanuja. The Divya Dhampathis Blessed Swami Ramanuja and accepted Swami Ramanuja's surrender and also Blessed all those who are disciples of Sri Ramanuja and are termed as Sri Ramanuja Dasas, who follow the foot steps of Swami Ramanuja. May be there are very many more significance for this auspicious Panguni Uthiram Day which our BhagavathA friends can enlighten us. It is indeeed a Great Treat & Blessing to have The Sevai of ThAyAr & PerumAl together on Panguni Uthiram Day. Guest guest Report post Posted March 27, 2007 Namaste! While I do not have full clarity on your questions, I would like to reply to my limited intellect for your 1st and 2nd questions: 1. It is said Mahalakshmi was born on this day out of Samudra Mathanam. Does it mean that there was no Mahalakshmi earlier to this event? --> Mahalaxmi is nitya (eternal) unlike Chaturmukha Brahma to the blade of grass who gets into unmanifested state during Pralaya. She is eternally existent along with Hari. Hence this question does not apply to her gunas (viz., nityatva) 2. Was Sriman Narayana a bachelor till then? --> At no point of time Narayana or Lakshmi are separated. They are both together always. In all his incarnations she will be there with him. She is called as 'Vishnu Hruthkamala Vasini' (residing in the heart of Hari). Please refer Purusha Suktha (Hreescha the lakshmischa patnou, "ahoratre parshve") and Sri Suktha for a better handle on their relationship who are eternally related to each other. Hence this question does not arise. Rest It is all Hari leela to dismay asuras and throw them into ignorance. As regards 4th question - pls consider sacred words of Acharyas (Sri Ramanuja, Sri Vedantha Desika etc.,) as truth and not any other stories. We need to get to the root of the story as to who wrote it and the background and then refer whether Acharya quoted on it. For us Acharya's words are pramana and not others. Thanks sukumar On Behalf Of raghunathan rSaturday, March 10, 2007 10:22 PMSrirangasri Subject: Panguni Uttiram Swamin, I have a few questions on Panguni Uttiram. I shall be grateful if I can be enlightened. 1. It is said Mahalakshmi was born on this day out of Samudra Mathanam. Does it mean that there was no Mahalakshmi earlier to this event? 2. Was Sriman Narayana a bachelor till then? 3. Are there other signifances to Panguni Uttiram? 4. In Srirangam, there is Mattai Adi on this day. The story goes as Ranganatha's visit to Uraiyur Nachiar was resented by Peria Piratti? The whole story appears more human othan divine. Is the story real and a mere figment of imagination by weak mortals? Shall be highly obliged if I can be enlightened.
