Thirunakshatram celebrations of Sri Manavaala Maamunigal

The following questions came to our mind yesterday.

 

1. Where does one go for celebrating Sri Desikan

Thirunakshatram?

 

2. Where does one go for celebrating Sri Ramanuja's

Thirunakshatram?

 

3. Where does one go for celebrating Sri Manavala

Maamunigal Thirunakshatram in Kuwait?

 

We heard the following solutions too.

 

1. Apart from many other places, it is celebrated in

Thiruvaheendra puram.

 

2. We visit Sriperumpudur

 

3. We visited Fahaheel a suburb in Kuwait.

 

There is no exaggeration in the above facts, as it

happened in Sri P.T.Narayanan's house in a suburb

called Fahaheel at around 50 Kms away from the main

Kuwait city.

 

To continue the festive season (Deepavali) it was the

idea of Sriman IVK Chary to celebrate the

Thirunakshatram of Sri Manavaala Maamunigal in

Kuwait, which was unanimously accepted by all the

members of Tiruvenkatam group in Kuwait. No doubt we

celebrate Acharyan Thirunakshatrams at our houses,

but, this was a group celebration. We were more than

40 in number to celebrate the "Aiyppasi Moolam"

thirunakshatram of Sri Manavaala Maamunigal. Probably

Sri P.T.Narayanan can vouch for the fact that the

Bhagavathas gathered last evening at his flat were

more than the number of people who visited them on the

occasion of Deepvali.

 

Added advantage is the advent of "Ramadan" – "Ramzan"

month few days back, which is a good sign for

office/school goers, where the offices start late and

work for reduced hours as the natives generally fast

during the day time. With this in mind the

celebrations started suitably at around 7pm in the

evening, as people can afford to stay late in the

evening.

 

It was a scintillating day after Deepavali, as the

Pasurams recited were some of the best gems. Full

credit goes to Sri P.T.Narayanan for the excellent

selection and arranging for collated copies (so that

people don't skip pages in searching and wasting time

thereby). Some of the new comers, who did not know the

capacity of the Prabandham peers (P.T.Narayanan and

Kooram Sudharsan) in Kuwait, had a fear on seeing the

booklet of so many pages and thought it will take more

than 3 hours to complete this set. The beautiful

rendition took us just over 2 hours to complete the

entire selection + few pasurams from Raamanusa

Nootrandadhi. Nonetheless the traditional pasurams

were not missed out.

The dedications started with Thiruppallandu, continued

with Thiruppavai. It was a good participation by all

the members, male and female to render all the

pasurams, as they were in Tamil.

 

Next was the turn of the gems – "Thuppudaiyarai"

("Appodhaikku Ippodhae solli vaithen"), "Virpera

Vizhavam" ("Thiruvallikkeni pasurams"), "Ulagamunda

Peruvaaya" ("Thiruvenkatam paasurams"). Thiruvaimozhi

pasurams "Uyarvara", "Veedumin", "Kangulum Pagalum"

(traditionally sung on the occasion), "Ulagamunda

Peruvaaya" and "Muniye Naanumgane" (last 10) were

preceded by Kanninun Siruthambu Pasurams, in

traditional style. Not to forget about the enthusiasm

seen in Tiruvenkatam group members when they were all

involved in singing "Ulagamunda Peruvaaya" on

Thiruvenkatamudaiyan.

 

Before going to "Adaikkalapathu", it was but apt for

Sriman IVK Chary to intervene and suggest the

recitation of few pasurams in Ramanusa Nootrandadhi.

Kooram Sudharsan added the "Muzhiyai Kidakkum" on

Koorathazhvan in between to make us remember his

native.

 

Then we recited "Adaikkalapathu" and the superb

"Upadesa Ratnamalai", when every one remembered all

the azhvars and acharyans by reciting those pasurams

twice. It was a new experience for me, as I have not

rendered this earlier.

 

Last but not the least, the Thiruvaimozhi

Nootrandhadhi Rettai Pasurams were rendered by Sri

Kooram Sudharsan.

 

The saatrumurai pasurams were selected from,

Thiruvaimozhi, Raamnusa Nootrandadhi and Upadesa

Ratnamalai. Vaazhi thirunaamam was followed by

theertham, with Yatiraja Vimsati rendition. The

befitting Naal Pattu (Ayippasi Moolam) was sung to

conclude the dedication.

 

Sri Narayanan gave a brief introduction about Sri

Manavaala Maamunigal.

 

Prasadams made by Mrs. Narayanan in the traditional

way with an Andhraite touch is always enjoyable.

"Today's special" in last evening's menu was "Paal

Pudalangai" - a "Kheer" made of snake gourd, fitting

for the occasion.

 

In all, it was a very well planned, organized and

celebrated occasion, thanks to Sri PT.Narayanan to

have made this happen. This shows his acharya nishtai.

Dear Asthika, I would lilke to inform you that now you need not go to

thiruvahindrapuram and sriperumbudur to attend the celebrations. I request all

the asthikas, it is being celebrated in the past 4,5 years together by all

srivaishnavas all these three mahotsavam in Muscat city. Not only annual

celebrations also monthly celebrations. New additon that Sri Manavala Mamunigal

divya mangala vigraham can be darshaned in Muscat city now. Already Sirman

Nathamuni, Srimad Bhashyakar and Swami Desikan with SriLakshmi Hayagrivan are

blessing all of us. Thanks for the information of celebration. Here too

yesterday we celebrated swami Manavalamamunigal's tirunakshatrm in a great

mannar. A swami, divyaprabanda adhikari, archakar of an ancient temple at

madras has come here and he performed aradhana to Sri krishnan and Swami

manavalamamunigal. Parivattam and malai from perumal was given to mamunigal

with kattiyam. then sathumarai was performed. Programmed finished at 10.45 pm.

tomorrow Sravanam and Sri Poygai alwar sathumarai will be held at Sri Sriraman

house at Wadi Kabir. Welcome to all the Asthikas. Govindarajan.

It is a great delight to read, hear and enjoy the united anubhavams

overseas celebrating Swamy Desikan and Sri Manavala mamuni TNs. We

in Singapore celebrated Swamy Desikan TN on his THirunakshathram

last month and tomorrow we will get together to celebrate Mudhal

AzhwAr TNs along with Sri Manavala mamuni's Thirunakshathram.

 

My personal favourite one is Sri Manavala mamuni's Artthi prabandham:

 

Tennarangar SIraruLukkilakkAga pppeRROm

Tiruvarangam tiruppaDiYE iruppAga pppeRROm

Manniya SIr mARan kalai uNavAga pppeRROm

Madurakavi SoRpaDiyE nilaiyAga pppeRROm

 

While reading it aloud, one can really feel the pride for the

sampradayam that we are bequethed with. Sri Varavaramuni's

naichyAnusanthAnam is also amazing. It is mroe applicable to us that

to Acharyas.. They have written the same for us.. (me- I am sure):

 

Swamy Desikan says in Hayagria sthOthra:

nAnAvidhAnAm agathih kalAnAm

na chApi theerthEshu krithAvathArah /

dhruvam thava anAtha parigrahAyAh am

navam pAtram aham dayAyAh:

 

I am not proficient in arts nor have I learned anything. You are

known to shelter the destitute. So, you must consider me as one

deserving your sympathy.

 

In this and following slOkas, Swami pleads to the Lord to save him

citing various reasons. In this one, he characterizes the Lord as a

huge "Helpage Home" for the destitute.

 

SwAmi implies that His mercy can have any meaning only in the case

of the destitute that have no qualifications. It is no big deal if

mercy saves those who have some qualification.

 

In fact, paradoxically, it is the lack of any qualification (to

adopt other means) is *the only* qualification to deserve Lord's

mercy.

 

ManavALa MAmunigal in his Artthi Prabandham (14) echoes the same

sentiment when he says:

 

adhikAram unDEl arangar iranguvArO?

adhikAram illAthavarkkanrO - ethirAja!

nee iranga vENDuvathu? neeyum adhikArikaLukkE

irangil en seyvOm yAm?

 

Maamuni was born an year after Swami Desikan's passing away

and had Sri Bhashyam kaalakshepam from one of the disciples

of Brahma Tantra Swami , the founder of the ParakAla mutt and

direct disciple of Swami Desikan . Maamuni had the highest regard

for Swami Desikan and used to refer to latter with great affection

as " ABHIYUKTHAR " OR THE REVERED ONE . Swami Desikan had

in turn the highest regard for the Achaarya of Maamuni's own

Achaarya, Sri Pillai LokAcharya.

 

Maamuni's deep attachment to RaamAnuja is evident from the

following facts : (1) He named his own son, RaamAnuja (2 ) His

tribute to the great AchArya in YathirAja Vimsathi (3) His choice of

writing a commentary on RaamAnuja NyurranthAdhi of Thiruvarangatthu

AmudanAr (4 ) modeling his composition ( ThiruvArAdhana Kramam "

after the Sanskrit work of RaamAnujA and(5) concluding his

life on this earth with the moving aarthi Prabhandham , where he

anguishes (aarthi ) at staying in this world and expresses his

eagerness to reach Sri VaikuNtam to perform Nitya Kaimkaryam to

Parama Padha Naathan. Thus Maamuni's first and last work were on

Acharya RaamAnuja.

 

In his work, Upadesa Ratna Maalai , Maamuni pays his tribute to

Acharya RaamAnujA as the establisher of Srimadh Bhagavadh

RaamAnuja SiddhAntham and the command to his disciple ,

Thirukuruhai PirAn PiLLai to wirite the first commentary on

ThiruvAimozhi.

 

The two paasurams of Upadesa Ratna Maalai referring to

Maamuni's tribute to Acharya RaamAnujA as the founder of

"RaamAnuja Darsanam " and his catalysing the writing of

the VyAkyAnam for Thiruvaimozhi are as follows :
