Dear Friends, Kerala Iyers Trust (KIT) received an appeal from Sri. Karthik R of Mumbai, about Shri K.S.Anantha Subramanian of Malad, Mumbai, who needs support to pay his medical expenses.

============ =======The Background:

The Appeal received from Sri Karthik

I introduce myself as a Kerala Iyer residing in Bombay for the past 20 yrs. One of my maternal uncles(Chittappa to be precise) is undergoing dialysis for the past two years. He is not able to work and needs support to lead a normal life. His wife is not much educated and is a housewife.

So I kindly appeal to all of you to lender him support in whatever means possible so as to enable him to lead a normal life.Regards,Karthik.R

============ ========= =====

What KIT found:

Smt Lakshmy and Shri P.P.Ramachandran agreed to get further information on this family & get an independent assessment of the case. They have sent us the following field visit report: ------------ --My wife and I paid a visit to Shri K.S.Anantha Subramanian of Malad and this is what we have to report. Shri Anantha Subramanian is 58 years old and his wife Vanaja 48 years. While he hails from Perumbavoor his wife is from Valayannur.

Unfortunately they have no children.They stay in a house owned by his uncle, who has allowed him to stay there for the last eight years without paying any rent and maintenance charges.It is a one tiny hall cum bedroom and kitchen flat , with asbestos ceiling - self contained and part of a colony of 70 families. It is facing a Saneeswaran temple which has advantages related later.

Anatha Subramanian was working for twenty years in Sesahasayee at Erode. Eight years ago he came to Mumbai and joined M/s Indmarko Industrial maintenace (Pvt) Ltd as a stenographer. He worked for four years when he was stricken with chronic renal failure in 2005 requiring dialysis three times a week He was unable to continue to work and he gave up his job.His wife is not educated and cannot seek employment anywhere.She is a housewife totally committed to looking after her ailing husband. The dialysis is done in a highly reputed Hospital--The Suchak Hospital and Research Centre at Malad East, Mumbai. We have seen the necessary documents and report of the Nephrologist, Dr Umesh Khanna.

Each dialysis costs Rs 650 per session. Asuming that there are 12 sessions in a month the cost works out to Rs 7,800.On top of thIs he has to take 12 injections each costing Rs 750/-.This works out to Rs 9000/- Medicines which he has to consume cost Rs 2000/ per month. So the monthly expenses connected with dialysis works out to Rs 7800/- plus Rs 9000/- plus Rs 2000/---a total of Rs 18,800--let us say Rs 19000. I mentioned earlier the advantage of being near Saneeswaran Temple. The Temple authorities are bearing the cost of two dialysis in a month.. Also a Jain Trust gives eight coupons against payment of Rs 150/-for each coupon in one month. Each coupon entitles him for one dialysis.This means that they give Rs 4,000 each month --in effect pay for six dialysis.a month. In effect Temple and Trust bear expenses for six dialysis in a month-- against 12 dialysis per month six are taken care

off. Thus every month he has to spend as follows--Cost of dialysis ---- Rs 4000/- Cost of injections-- Rs 9000/- Cost of medicines- Rs 2000/Total Rs 15,000 /-

For their day-to day living they get regular monthly remittance from a brother who sends Rs 4000/-.This helps them keep away from starvation. Thanks to a benificent uncle and a good landlord ( such persons still exist, I am happy to report !) they pay a nominal amount of Rupees sixty only per month. They have understandably a debt of Rs 1 lakh, which they are struggling to repay.Whatever savings Anantha Subramanian had in 2005 went for his initial expenditure when his kidney failed. He has not so far obtained any massive assistance from any Trust or Charitable organisation. Our Trust will be the first one to help him in a big way.

This is a desperate case calling for desperate remedies. Since he has to be continuosly attended to Smt Vanaja cannot take up any job. Nor is she qualified for that. They manage to eke out a meagre life from the munificent remittance by a brother. Monthly expense at a minimum is Rs 15,000/-.Some sundry amounts have been given by people who have come to know of this patient.

We sincerely believe that this is a unique case crying out for help and KIT and all members must rise up to help a stricken brother and pull him out of a hopeless situation he is cruelly placed in by Fate.

Lakshmy.P.P.Ramachandran.
