Yes, anyone can do any prashidhya mantra without initiation. If it is not a prashidya mantra, then selection of a perticular mantra to serve a perticular purpose is a bit lengthy process.

 

But you have to do pranapratistha & deepana of the mantra for yourself. Methods are easy,

 

Pranapratistha:

Chant the mantra 7 times by doing samputita with "OM" at both ends. That means chant it 7 times as OM...(the mantra)...OM

 

Deepan:

 

Then chant the mantra 7 times by doing samputita with "HREEM" at both ends. That means chant it 7 times as HREEM...(the mantra)...HREEM

 

After this start chanting the mantra as original. It will start working for you.

 

If you do the 12 letter mantra I mentioned, it has 4 words and 12 letters. The mantra will draw energy from your 4th house of sukha and give effects of 12th house of rejuvination. Mantra devata Narasimha himself will seat at 9th from 12th i.e 8th house.

 

 

If you do the 8 letter mantra I mentioned, it has 3 words and 8 letters. The mantra will draw energy from your 3H of action and give effects of 8th house of longivity. Mantra devata Narasimha himself will seat at 9th from 8th i.e 4th house.

 

All our Purana starts with 12 letter mantra "OM NAMAH BHAGAVATE VASUDEVAYA". That is why Puranas can never die.
