why need temples?

Someone asked me this:

 

" If God is everywhere, why do we need temples? "

 

How should I answer him?

om namashivaya, one should understand the real meaning of hinduism, we say god

is everywhere, and every particles of the universe, he is there withinyou too.

To realize the presence of god within you you have to follow strict mediation as

prescribed by mahathmas . why we need temples is that mass worship will be

possible only in a temple, by which bagavan makes everyone to feel the oneness.

hence in acient period a lot of temples were built and it is being built even

today.this paves WAY FOR MASS WORSHIP .If you feel that you CAN DO worship for

the masses of this universe you can do it at home or whereever you feel

like.

Umashankarji, does that mean temples are only useful for mass worship?

 

Does it mean they have no purpose for individuals? As many old temples were

really tiny- only 1-2 people could enter them at a time. Huge temples is a

recent phenomena.

There are different levels of perception. Sariyai, Kriyai, Yogam and Gnanam are

the four levels of worship. In Sariyai, one considers the idols in the temple as

verily gods; in kriyai, one is able to realise that God is both within and in

the idols of the temple; in yogam, one realizes that God is within and in

Gnanam, one is able to realize God's presence in every form, both manifest and

unmanifest. Once you attain Gnanam, you no longer will feel the need for

worshiping in temples.

Again i would like to quote swami vivekananda's quote which i posted little

earlier

 

" We always begin as dualists. God is a

separate Being, and I am a separate being. Love comes between, and man begins to

approach God, and God, as it were, begins to approach man. Man takes up all the

various relationships of life, as father, mother, friend, or lover; and the last

point is reached when he becomes one with the object of worship. " I am you, and

you are I; and worshipping you, I worship myself; and in worshipping myself, I

worship you. " There we find the highest culmination of that with which man

begins. At the beginning it was love for the self, but the claims of the little

self made love selfish; at the end came the full blaze of light, when that self

had become the Infinite. That God who at first was a Being somewhere, became

resolved, as it were, into Infinite Love. Man himself was also transformed. He

was approaching God, he was throwing off all vain desires, of which he was full

before. With desires vanished selfishness, and, at the apex, he found that Love,

Lover, and Beloved were One. "

 

TO SUMUP LET ME SAY

 

" So as a begginer i seperated God from Me and depicted in a manner accepted by

me and built a temple or a seperate place and had his image/symbol, I started

worshiping him/her/it in a seperate place called temple.

 

I worshiped him/her/it in different forms and relation in the seperate place

called temple.

 

Then as time passed i began to know God is not seperate from Me or You so i

choose again temple as a place to know about me and Love.

 

May be as i progress i would feel the whole world as a temple and still search

and seek. "

 

AS SWAMIJI & OSHOJI SAID " we all are like traders shopkeepers and pray to GOD

in anticipation that he would give us wealth health prosperity and what not...

with out understanding HIM/OURSELVES, we go against nature and worship like a

shopkeeper - I pray you, you give me this that... "

 

I would like to put it in this way, Even advanced soul sit in a place regularly

( for meditation or for prayers ), for a common man it would be a place called

Temple to Meditate/worship him/her/it may be for materialistic pleasure or

samadhi/moksha ( for advanced soul ).

 

Even advanced spiitual souls look for a regular place for meditation, but in my

veiw as he/she advances the total world would be his/her temple.

 

Shanji i may be quite wrong, pls forgive me and shed light on the question you

asked.

GOD is not everywhere. This is a wrong complete misguided concept of the

understanding of Almighty GOD.

 

Prophet Adam told us where GOD is and multiples prophets came to earth to give

us valuable relevant information communication of our GOD.

Senthilji, it was in a book by Osho I read that temples were built acc. to very

scientific measures. The roof was dome shaped, which would cause the chanted

mantras to form a circle around Sadhaks head. So even the Sadhak stopped, the

Mantra energy would keep swirling above his head.

 

This moving energy, when it combined with Sadhaks energy, would complete the

circuit, which would cause the Sadhak to enter into Samadhi.

 

thats why old temples had a small door, or were built in caves it was hard to

enter(see the original gate of VaishoDevi for example). The purpose was no

energy should be lost, all the energy should be circling around the Sadhak.

 

The other details of temple depended on which mantra was chanted- for Sufis,

this was Hoo,as in allah hoo, while for Hindus is is Aum.

 

The bells are there to stop the mind, & to replicate the Anahat sound heard in

heart chakra.

 

Temple building was a science - I was reading in another place that temples are

built acc. to Yantras, with the Yantras hidden beneath floor etc. One western

researcher even found Yantras hidden in erotic images of Khajuraho! But these

Yantras are secret, & their design/purpose is unknown.

 

These highly energised temples vitalised the whole village, which is why each

village had its temple. Just walking by a temple made your feelings spiritual.

 

A related question is: do Teerath Sthans(pilgrimages) have any effect, or are

they just like tourist spots?

Very true ShanJi, even the architects and civil engineers in those day had very

precise knowledge. Even in recent days, if you have visited Gandhi mandap in

Kanyakumari and a few temples in Kumbakonam,I wonder how they have precisesly

built, a beam of sunlight falls on a particular place on all days/seasons...

even when the earth tilts its axis. Amazing.

Again Very True Shanji, but as a common man most of us donot know the secrets

behind yantras.

I would say Teertha sthans are Natural Temples without human made either in the

form of a temple building or Yantras.

 

Theerta sthans have that spiritual waves naturally, like you said we feel the

spiritual waves when we pass by a Temple.
