Guest guest Report post Posted March 8, 2006 Namaste, The famous land-bridge to Lanka has not been recently "discovered" by NASA, and the name "Adam's Bridge" was given long ago by the Portuguese, who also named the striking and idyllic mountain that it leads to as "Adam's Peak" and the veritable "Garden of Eden". When Marco Polo first arrived in Lanka, there were more islands in the channel between India and Shri Lanka, but the sea level has been slowly rising ever since the last Ice-Age, and in the past there would have been absolutely no need to build a bridge to Lanka. If you walk from Rameshvaram towards Lanka, the long sand spit becomes more and more narrow and eventually tapers off into the sea. But on a clear day you can see Shri Lanka from the high-water mark (which is as far as Indian border control will allow) and, except for one or two narrow channels, at low tide it would still be theoretically possible to wade through the shallows all the way to Lanka.
