Dear Friends

After completion of my daily Puja, I offered Prasadam to my

most beloved God Sri Jagannath Swamy. A Doubt sparkled in my mind -

Why should we offer prasadam to God when everything is given by God?

Thanking you,

kalyan simha

Dear Kalyanasimha,

I believe this is symbolic representation of giving

back to the creator Lord Shiva.

which represents giving back in gratitude.

Unfortunately many people only follow the ritual but

not practice in reality. In reality we have to give

back in gratitude to our parents, gurus, and help

other gods creation when required.

Om namah shivaya,

Divakar.

Why do we offer prasadam to God ?

Om svastyastu!!! From my experience prasadam CANNOT be offered to God.

Only unoffered BOGH is permitted to be offered. After offering the bogh

that becomes prasadam or "offered thing." So in essence God is offering

the prasadam to us.

In the ashram I lived in for 7 years in Vrindavan it was seva aparadha

to offer prasadam (already offered items) back to God. If we touched

prasadam our hand became "prasadi" (touched to prasad) and had to be

washed off before we could touch any unoffered bogh. If any bogh was

touched to prasadam or by a prasadi hand, then it could NOT be offered

because it was "prasadi." This is pakka vidhi-marga also known as

"vaishnavatva."

It is a spiritual distinction.

Everything in this world belongs to him. We are offering things that was created

by him and that belongs to him.

In a way we are showing our thanks to him and we are taking things with his

permission by showing him what we're taking was his and that we're not

stealing.

Prasadam means blessed food. We take the food he have given us, offer to him

with love, He bless it and gives back to us.

With this practise he's always trying to tell us that everything in this world

belongs to him and we're just beggars here. Even our body don't belong to us.

In some places holyash, water are also considered Prasad. So prasad not only

means food, it can be in any form. Everything which we have are all his.

Im my view, it does not matter if the food is touched on untouched. Looking at

the story of kannappan, he offered meat to the lord who accpeted it because it

was out of pure devotion and love. Therefore, depanding on circumstances of an

individual and his current situaion and knowledge, as long as the offering is

done with pure devotion and love and with no inteniton of the self, I am sure

that God who created us as a mirrior relection of HIM will accept such a prasad

be it touched or untouched.

God is above all. Whatever that is brought close or accepted by the Lord beocmes

pure again as we move closer to the Lord we too become pure within. Thanks.
