Swami Madhavanand, the Shankaracharya of Prayag Peeth said Sonia is

not a Videshi but is a swadeshi. He reiterated that he did not

consider Sonia as Videshi. He also disagreed with the BJP-led

alliances proposal that the constitution be amended to bar people of

foreign origin from occupying high offices.

Jaipur: A three-day State-level convention of the Jamat-e-Islami

Hind (JIH), organised here last fortnight, warned against political

parties inciting violence to serve their divisive agenda and pointed

out that this was one of the dangerous results of the misuse of

religion for political ends. The central theme of the convention,

which was held after a gap of 14 years, was "Let us move towards

peace, progress and salvation". The venue of the meet- the Karbala

ground in the centre of the city was named Wadi-e-Aman (Valley of

Peace) and it was attended by over 15,000 delegates, including 7,000

women. The participants included a large number of non-Muslims as

well. The convention was inaugurated by the national president of

Jamat-e-Islami, Maulana Sirajul Hasan. Prominent among those who

addressed various sessions of the meet were the Shankaracharya of

Prayag Peeth, Swami Madhavanand Saraswati, Congress Working

Committee member, Manishankar Aiyar, president of Muslim Majlis-e-

Mushawrat,

Syed Shahabuddin, social activist and recipient of the Magsaysay

Award, Sandeep Pandey and noted Jaipur-based Sarvodaya leader,

Siddhraj Dhaddha.

A special session on women's issues was held on the second day and

was addressed by Muneera Khanam, organiser of the ladies wing in Jih

Maharashtra, Nasira Khanam, Shaista Rafat and Dr. Fazlurrahman

Fareedi, member, JIH central advisory council.

6/july/2000: Puri Shankaracharya to expose fake

Shankaracharyas... (Swami Madhavanand, the Shankaracharya of Prayag

Peeth)

Puri Shankaracharya to expose fake godmen

Alarmed by an imposter Shankaracharya's attempt to mediate in

Kashmir, the

Shankaracharya of Puri Swami Nischalanand Saraswati has decided to

launch a

nation-wide campaign to expose fake godmen.

Disclosing this at the Govardhan Math in Puri, where the

Shankaracharya resides,

his deputy Swami Gopalanand today said the Shankaracharya would

interact with

all the acharyas and sants to clamp down on activities of self-

claimed

Sankracharyas.

"We are also not ruling out the possibility of legal action. At the

moment,

however, religious interaction appears to be the best way to deal

with the

situation," he said.

Last week, several national dailies reported that the Shankaracharya

of Puri

held talks with Hurriyat leaders in Jammu and Kashmir. Swami

Nischalanand

Saraswati was quick to dissociate himself from any attempt to

mediate in Kashmir

and said that the seer holding parleys in the Valley was an imposter.

This story was first broken by rediff.com.

Subsequently, in a statement issued on behalf of the Shankaracharya

of Puri, the

Govardhan Math claimed that some powerful people, including

politicians, were

backing the fake Shankaracharya.

"The Shankaracharya of Puri is already in talks with the other three

Shankaracharyas. Also, he will try to bring all the Madhavacharyas,

Nimbarkacharyas, Ramanujancharyas and Ramanandacharyas together on

this issue,"

Swami Gopalanand said.

Gopalanand said there were at least 50 fake Shankaracharyas roaming

around in

the country claiming to head one or the other math or peeth.

"Surprisingly some of them have created their own peeths like

Prayag. The fact

is that only four peeths exist in the country and they were founded

by Adi

Shankaracharya long, long ago," he said.
