While engaged in a discussion with a group of well versed pandits, Sri

Madhwa told them that every word in Veda had atleast three connotations; &

every word in Mahabharatha had ten different connotations & every word in

Sri Vishnu Sahasranama had not less than hundred different connotations.

Unbelieving, the pandits challenged Sri Madhwa to illustrate his answer by

taking the first word Viswam in Vishnu Sahasranamam. Sri Madhwa after doing

a few connotations with ease to the bewilderment of pandits, asked them to

repeat what he had said. Unable to cope, the pandits admitted their

defeat.

Eager to defeat Sri Madhwa at another place, the pandits asked him

the meaning of the word " Apala " . Sri Madhwa stated that it means a maiden

who had newly attained puberty. But the pandits asserted that the word

meant who had been affected by Leucoderma--a disease, for which Sri Madhwa

told them that a certain pandit would come on a particular day & clear their

doubt. The pandits were spell bound when such a pandit did arrive &

confirmed the meaning given by Sri Madhwa. They hailed him as a

" Trikalajnani " meaning one who knows the present, past & future.

Seeing Sri Madhwa's strong determination to put down all " Abath

Siddhanta " they looked upon him as Bheemasena reincarnated who annihilated

all his enemies. He wrote the Gita Bhashya & presented it to his guru &

proceeded to Badri purifying the various theerthas by bathing in them.

May Sri Madhwa dwell in the mind & purify our antahkarana.

Sri Madhwa after reaching lower Badari dedicated his Gita bhAshya to Sri

Narayana. While He was observing silence & fast, Sri Vedavyasa directed

Him to proceed to greater Badari; and so He instructed His disciplies to

stay back until His return & gave them His message in writing : " There is no

other punyakshetra equal to this where BhAghirathi flowed, neither any God

equal to Sri Vishnu, nor any message equal to Mine in securing ultimate

God " . When His dear pupil Sathyatheertha tried to follow Him, Sri Madhwa

waved His hand indicating that he should go back. Sri Madhwa continued his

journey to Moola Badari hoping from one boulder to another looking like Sri

Hanuman & Sri Bheemasena, recalled to His mind the myriad glories of Lord

Sri Krishna.

May Sri Madhwa be pleased with my progress for Spiritual

upliftment.

Sri Madhwa reached the great Vyasa Ashrama where Sri Vedavyasa was seated

under a beautiful Badari tree surrounded by sages. The Ashrama appeared

like Vaikuntha with Sri Vedavyasa, the son of Sathyavathi & Sage Parashara,

the author of Brahmasutras, the Mahabharatha, & eighteen puranas seated

like a guru. Sri Madhwa prostrated to Sri Vedavyasa; and the Ashramities

wondered on seeing Sri Madhwa who that personality could be, either

Chaturmukha Brahma, Sri Vayu or Sri Surya in ascetic robes. He saw the

guru of pAndavas who was perfect & with noble attributes without any

blemish.

May Sri Vedavyasa who is full of auspicious excellences &

Sri Madhwa be pleased to be with us.

The bodily features of Sri Vedavyasa were perfect with radiant complexion.

His personality was grand & magnificent. His consort Lakshmi is unable to

enumerate the infinite attributes of the Lord. He possessed excellent

attributes like Vijnana, Ananda, Tejas etc... His lotus like feet, golden

hued treses crimson colored, the deer skin worn round the waist, were

presenting wonderful sight to Sri Madhwa. He prostrated at the feet of His

Master with devotion & humility. Sri Vedavyasa gave him an affectionate

embrace which was denied even to Sukhacharya. Sri Vedavyasa offered near

him a seat to Sri Madhwa who was extremely dear to Him & to all other sages

who knew the greatness of Sri Vayu.

May Sri Madhwa who was worshipped by the sages be

pleased to protect us.

Shri Madhwa then went to Narayana Ashrama & devoutly contemplated for a very

long time on Narayana the sustainer of the Universe (Jagaj Janmadi Karana).

He further most reverentially meditated on His other avathara rupas

viz...adorable Matsya, Hayagreeva, Kurma, Varaha, Narahari, Taapasa

manu, Vamana, Buddha, Parashurama, Vedavyasa, Dasaratha Rama, Krishna,

Aitareya Mahidasa, Kalki, Yajna, Kapila , Dhanvantari, Mohini.

Respectful obeisances to Sri Madhwa, the dearest disciple of

Sri Vedavyasa who was immersed in meditation on Sri Narayana.

Sri Madhwa continued to meditate on other rupas of Sri Vishnu viz... on

Dattatreya, Sanat Kumara, Rishabha, Hamsa, Krishna, Hari, Narayana & the

like who has tens of forms, the hundred avatharas like Narayana & the like,

the thousand avataras like the Ajitha & the like. Sri Narayana directed Sri

Madhwa to compose the Bhashya on the Brahmasuthras substantiated by Vedas &

spread the message of true & correct knowledge for salvation for the sAtvik

souls. Sri Narayana assured Sri Madhwa that the success would bring

blindness to the tamasic souls like the sunrise to an owl. On the contrary,

the sAtwic souls would be happy & be benefitted by them. Thus assured, Sri

Madhwa started on his return journey bearing in mind the mission of His

avatara.

May Sri Vedavyasa---Narayana rupa of Sri Hari be our refuge.

After taking leave of Sri Vedavyasa, Sri Madhwa reached lower Badari where

his disciples were awaiting him. On the way, He accepted Bhiksha from

several persons. He composed the Sutra Bhashya strictly in accordance with

the intentions of Sri Vedavyasa & embodying the unlimited & auspicious

qualities of Sri Hari. It was an excellent commentary without flaw &

established the transcendental supremacy of Sri Vishnu by refuting the

untenable views. One would get all the desired benefits by studying it

since the Bhashya possessed the same qualities as those of Sri Madhwa. To

write even a letter from the Bhashya would bring the merit equal to that of

building a temple of Vishnu on the banks of the sacred Ganga. He then

proceeded to the South where He defeated Shobhana Bhatta, the well known

pandit of six systems of philosophy of those days who became His pupil (Sri

Padmanabha Theertharu). On the way, many scholors became His pupils & with

them, Sri Madhwa reached Udupi.

May Sri Madhwa the eminent be pleased to help us in getting

true knowledge.

Sri Madhwa taught the Bhashya to many friendly saints & his own guru &

dispelled deep rooted misconceptions & misguided notions imbibed from

earlier bhAshyas. He lifted alone effortlessly the image of Sri Krishna

which could not be lifted by the combined strength of thirty youths, brought

it to Udupi & worshipped it. The idol was thus made more sanctified by his

pooja. Sri Madhwa warded of an opponent who was non conversant with its

proper conduct & caused one such yajna officiated by his brother..

Therefore Sri Madhwa went a second time to Badari &

reverentially dedicated His Brahmasutrabhashya to Sri Vedavyasa who was

pleased with Sri Madhwa's faithful & correct exposition & blessed Him with

" Sahabhoga " which was conferred to Sri Hanuman in his Ramavatara.

Sri Vedavyasa then directed him to write Tatparyanirnaya on

Mahabharatha since the text had been highly mutilated & distorted. This

shows the unsurpassed greatness of Sri Madhwa among the devotees of Sri

Vishnu.

May Sri Madhwa bestow His grace on us.

King Ishvara Deva intending to construct a tank was compelling every passer

by to dig irrespective of their stature. He ordered Sri Madhwa also to dig.

Sri Madhwa asked the king to show how to dig, made the king dig

continuously while He Himself departed from there.

When boats were not plying on the turbulent Ganga, by the orders of

the Muslim king, Sri Madhwa crossed the river without the help of a boat.

When asked by the king how he could do it, He replied to the king in his

own language that Almighty Narayana who protected the Universe including the

king had guided Him to cross. Impressed by the answer, the king honored

Him by gifting half of his kingdom. Enroute some thieves came to kill the

party, Sri Madhwa went into them with His budled " Karavastra " which the

thiefs mistook for a treasure & they fought & killed each other. In a

second incident, a disciple of Sri Madhwa snatched a sword from the robbers

& swirled it making the robbers take to their heels. In a third incident,

by His mystic powers, He & His disciples appeared to the robbers as stone

images making them go away disappointed.

May Sri Madhwa endowed with such divine powers be pleased &

protect us.

Once when Sri Madhwa was going in the Himalayas, his pupil Sri

Sathyatheertha, who was carrying his idols of worship, was attacked by a

demon appearing as a tiger which Sri Madhwa killed with his hands. Sri

Madhwa again proceeded to Narayana Ashrama & received eight Vyasamushtis

(which have the immediate presence of the Lord Lakshmi Narayana) from

Vedavyasa for pooja. Bearing in his mind Sri Vedavyasa's command to compose

the Mahabharatha Tatparya Nirnaya, Sri Madhwa rejoined His disciples at

lower Badari crossing the river Ganga by His yoga of Jalastambhana (walking

on water). While camping at Hastinapura for ChaturmAsya, the celestial

Ganga appeared & paid Her obeisances to Sri Madhwa. Once when fifteen of

his youthful disciples were proud of their physical strength, Sri Madhwa

defeated them single handed.

May Sri Madhwa with such divine & supernatural powers be pleased

& protect us.

Sri Madhwa met a sanyasin by name Amaravati in a debate & defeated him by

his sound reasoning & established that jnana & karma were instrumental in

attaining Moksha. He vanquished the protagonists of all other systems by

his superlative exposition & pointed out the hollowness & unsoundness in

their systems of philosophy. This spread a halo about him.

At Kurukshetra, He showed to His disciple Sathyatheertha & others,

the mace (gada), used by him as Bheemasena, which wwas embedded in the

soil. Sri Rudra Devaru appeared as a brahmin & respectfully offered Bhiksha

to Sri Madhwa. At another place, a king who wanted to test whether Sri

Madhwa in his earlier incarnation was Sri Bheemasena, offered him a

thousand large sized plaintains & thirty pots of milk, which Sri Madhwa

consumed effortlessly. By His superhuman proficiency in music, He made His

audience fall asleep, & rendered a dried wood to sprout & bear flowers &

fruits which astounded everybody.

Let us fall at the feet of Sri Madhwa who is praised &

worshipped by righteous people
