Dear Shree Murali,

Radhe Krishna!

Good, you reminded me. I wanted to tell all--- there are 1036 slokas in

Narayaneeyam, out of which 1034 slokas are really atttreibuted to

Narayana Bhattatiri, but there are two (which make up the 1036), which

are supposed to be interposed by somebody in course of time. I am

putting up one of those slokas for the devotees to read. I have removed

the text portions which are in devanagari script which will be garbled

in the mail, but I am giving only ordinary transliterations, without the

dia-critical marks. These two slokas appear as the 11th and 12th slokas

in Narayaneeyam. As these are not in the normal versions of

Narayaneeyam, I am taking pleasure putting them down. The 11th sloka is

as follows:

Saghagre atha vidhum vilokya phalam ithi ambam cha thatham muhuh

Samprarthya atha thada thadeeya-vachasa prokshiptha-bahou twayi.

Chithram deva sasee sa the karam agaath kim broomahe sampathath

Jyothir-mandala-poorithakhila-vapuh pragah Virat-roopatham.

_*Anvaya*_* *Atha Saghagre Vidhum vilokya " phalam " ithi ambam thatham

cha muhuh samprarthya atha thadeeya-vachasa twayi prokshiptha-bahou

(sathi), thada, hey deva! chithram sah sasee they karam agaath! Kim

broomahe! (Twam) Sampathath Jyothir-mandala-pooritha-akhila-vapuh

Virat-roopatham pragah!

_*

Meaning:*_ Thereafter, one day, seeing the moon above a tree-branch,

(taking it) to be a fruit and having entreated your mother and then

father too, again and again, when you raised your hand on their word,

then,O Lord! What a wonder! that moon came to your hand! What shall we

say! (You), with all parts of (your) body filled with descending

Jyothir-mandalas (Luminary objects), attained the Virat form!

_*Commentary D45S11*_

“During that period, one day, You saw the full Moon up above a tree

branch. Taking it to be a fruit, You extended Your hands to get it and

became insistent. All her efforts to pacify You having failed, Your

mother, Yasoda the innocent woman, sent You to Your father. You were not

satisfied with that. You were insisting that You should get that fruit.

At last without any other go, Nanda said playfully, ‘Darling, I cannot

reach that fruit, Why don’t you try ? You will certainly be able to

reach that fruit and pluck it’, and lifted You up. You, on Your part, as

though You were an innocent boy, raised Your hands high to reach that

fruit. And lo! What a wonder! The Moon which was shining high up in the

sky instantly came down to Your tiny hands. Not only that, all the

heavenly luminary bodies like the stars that were shining in the sky,

came down and filled all parts of Your body. To put it briefly, You

attained the Virat-swarupa, the Cosmic form.”

The entire Universe and all the luminary bodies included therein are

described as constituting the parts of the body of that Virat Purusha.

Since each such body came to the respective organs or parts, Krishna,

the boy, verily became the Virat Purusha.

(From Narayaneeyam- Bhaktaranjini commentary)

KVG.

Dear Syamalaji,

Radhe Krishna!

These efforts are only towards enhancing Bhakti towards Lord

Guruvayoorappan, in those who are already His devotees, and creating

Bhakti in those who dont have it. If any of these write-ups in this

forum are read by even one person like you, and helps that objective, I

would consider myself, the most " Blessed " . It was with the same

intention, the English version of the Narayaneeyam commentary was also

published. And when there were two beautiful slokas which are not

present in other editions, I thought devotees would like it. And you have.

I was reminded of them by our devotee-friend Murali Ambala Kolliyil,

when he referreed to full moon and Satyanarayana Pooja.

I must thank him for reminding me of that..

Jai Sreekrishna Dear Shri Gopalkrishnaji I would be obliged if you could kindly let me know the site where I can read the commentary on Narayaneeyam .
