Dear All,

Kavadi is so associated with Murugan and its inspiring to watch. Can anybody tell me what is the legend associated with kavadi? Also, what does carrying the kavadi symbolise? (I have heard about Idumban, but I'm quite blur about the whole story).

Thank you"R.Sivaramakrishna Sharma" <dhandapani wrote:

Imagine if all these need to be put together into a book!(it might - around a crore pages ......!)AnywayThere are some files in the website(http://in.geocities.com/arunagirinathar/) in the texts sections , intamil and sanskrit.Incase you want something more than that - check out the murugan.orgwebsite. Patrick seems to maintain a fairly large collection of slokas.Regards,Sivaramakrishnan

THere is a seperate section on the LEGEND of the KAVADI at the website -

http://in.geocities.com/arunagirinathar/pazhani/kavadi.html

Kavadi is of aeonic origin - which is impossible to date.

I think even http://www.murugan.org has good resources on Kavadi.

Hi All..

Muruga Saranam

Already a good information has been posted about the Legend of Kavadi

by our moderator. As I have carried Kavadi twice to Palani from my

native place, I would like to add my experience.

I would state that Kavadi Prarthana is the most effective in Murugan

Bhakthi. Many miracles happen by taking up and fulfilling Kavadi

Prarthana. I know a person whose daughter had blood cancer. Its

common knowledge that it cant be cured. But with all his total belief

in the Lord he carried kavadi.

As usal the Lord never betrays those who have total belief and

involvement in Him. He helps those who surrender themselves to Him

totally. His daughter has got completely cured and even after several

years still hale and healthy. About to get married soon. There are

many more such incidents like dumb people speaking, limping people

walking properly etc..

Kavadi pilgrimage is in fact more meaningful in Bhakthi Yoga. As you

go in a fasting like you do in Vanaprastha. With only two seamless

clothes, not covering your upper body, without fearing hot sun or

cold. Taking food offred by bhakthas like a saint. When you come back

if you see that places where you stayed, slept and ate, you will be

surprised how you didnt acquire any dissease. In normal life even if

we travel from city to city, change of water bothers with cold and

infection. But in this journey, really nothing affects. All this can

happen only by the mercy of the Lord. For any problem we just pray

and apply some thiruneeru (vibhuthi - the holy ash), and all problems

disappear. Faith increases in this path.

Apart from this all the spiritual experience we get in this fasting

period of 45 days and the journey and other formalities of 20 days is

really great. The bhajans include many devotional songs written by

local poets which invokes group bhakthi. The Sacred scriptures like

Thirupugazh or Kandar alangaram or Skandspurana are holy and

powerful. They are pure and sacred in the words and description (sol

sutham and ilakkana sutham - pure or proper words and accurate

grammer). It is said that certain songs like Varukai pathigam in

Selvamuthu kumarasamy pathigam is so powerful that if recited,

Murugan Himself will be pleased and appear. But then these localised

devotional songs written in simple language are also not less. These

local poets use to assume Murugan as their own child or friend or

mother or father and use to tell Him their problems like a

complaining kid. And use to ask " when your son is suffering how you

are happy with your lance and peacock on your hill " .

Another one asks, Your bhaktha's who are in lakhs and lakhs may

disturb your peace. I have a wonderful place here no one can disturb

you. Why dont you stay in my heart. Though at first it may seem to be

ignorance on the part of the poet as no one can disturb the peace of

Lord as He Himself is the Peace, but little involvement will reveal

that it is the knowledgible ignorance of the poet. Just a way of

expressing Love towards Him.

In another interesting one the poet asks, I have been praying to you

right from the time my eyes were opened. I have been telling myself

to wait for the arul of the six faces. But what me - a poor man can

do if you run away at sighting me. I have been walking all my life to

your holy abode, you should guide me in the right way.

These kind of devotional songs enrich the entire pilgrimage and the

simplicity of the local language involves us more in the Lord and His

greatness. We are slowly drawn away from the material desires towards

the Great Lord Himself. Other devotional songs sung in the journey

pray to the Lord to stop us from this karmic cycle of birth-death,

action-reaction and papa-punya and requesting Him to show way for

reaching holy feet and enjoy the Bliss. May Lord Murugan bless all of

us with Moksha the highest desire a man can have.

Just to describe what Kavadi has and how we carry it:

Kavadi has the main wooden rod made out of Aala Vizhudhu (dont know

the english name for it. It is the hanging roots of the large Banyan

like tree). This gives it the lightness. This is known as ThiruvaLa

thandu which joins the two wooden plates on the front and back. The

front one is called Vinayaka Palakai and the back one the Muruga

Palakai. These plates are said to be kept under the soil for six

months and then in well water for six months so that it becomes

light. Some people carve these two plates to have the images of

deities. Some keep it plain or some holy designs. Between these two

plates the curved wodden rod runs and a frame is made upon this.

Forgot the name of this part. Over this curved frame the cloth

(usually with designs or symbols and stiched and designed borders) is

laid atop. This cloth is known as pannangu.

On the Main wooden rod (thiruvaLa thandu) at both the ends the

Muthirai chembu (small brass pots) are arranged. Sambirani (oud)

smoke is filled and then sarkarai (jaggery powder) which is the main

ingradient of panchamritham is tightly filled into it. After filling

it the seal (muthirai) is made with the holy ash. Through out this

time arohara is chanted by people around. Once the seal is made it is

believed that Lord has entered into it. The person who is carrying it

should have gone through the strictest fasting procedures including

not talking unnecessary things, not seeing bad. spending more time in

puja and bhakthi. It is said that people without proper fasting wont

be able to complete the Kavadi or are faced with serious difficulties

during the pilgrimage. Sometimes even people who are weaker carry it

with ease, where as stronger people with good physique and experience

in walking suffer. If one feels that he is carrying his kavadi by his

own strength, even the lighter kavadi feels heavier for him. For some

even the heaviest kavadi appears lighter. So it is advised that one

should not estimate whether a kavadi is small or big or heavy or

light as all carry it only by the wish and mercy of the Lord.

When all reach the hill top the sarkarai is removed from the brass

pots and is sent for abhishekam for the Lord. Then it is returned and

Panchamritham is made out of that Sarkarai. This Panchamritham is

distributed to the Kavadi holders and is filled back in the same

brass pots. These brass pots are tied back to the Kavadi and is

carried back (the return journey is also by walk only) to the place

where the pilgrimage started.

At home in the prayer room the panchamritham is consumed and the

family members also distributed. Then only the fasting comes to an

end. More people carry Kavadi, more the community and the country

will get benefitted.

Many people who take kavadi feel like taking it every year or atleast

associate with it some way or the other. Many people supply food and

other essential items throughout to the bhakthas. They do so many

services to them.

WitH Best Regards

Meyyappan
