Dear All, I don't know why today the words "Atithi Devo Bhavah" came to my mind, and I was contemplating on the same, not from the normal perspective but may be some out-of-the-box view. ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH Let us abbreviate it to ADH now for easy reference. The layman's translation is 'Guest is God' or the stupid Indian tourism's version of the the same, 'customer is king' does not depict the true intent of the above quote. May be the words 'guests are divine' could better depicts its primary meaning. History:---------- This quote is taken from the Taittiriya Upanishad is one of the older, "primary" Upanishads. Wikipedia states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atithi_Devo_Bhav ) as follows -//It is the verse in the Taittiriya Upanishad that says "Matru devo bhava, Pitru devo bhava, Acharya devo bhava, Atithi devo bhava". Means One should worship Mother, Father, Teacher and Guests as God.Tithi in Sanskrit means a date. In ancient time when means of communication were limited and it was not possible to anticipate date of arrival of guest the word "Atithi" was coined to depict a visiting person who had no fixed date of arrival or departure. "Devo" means God and Bhav means Be/Is, literally meaning "Guest is God"There is another interpretation very different from the above// That was bit for informative - but still not good enough for us, it seems. :) What are these "Other (possible) interpretations" Wikipedia is pointing to? Is there any astrological relevance to this quote? Why it came to my mind on this Maha Siva Ratri day? When we start to contemplate new info naturally gets revealed by itself! Let us see what follows.Astrological meanings--------------------------- ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH'Tithi' (the lunar day) comes into existence by the longitudinal difference of Sun and Moon. It is one of the base parameters used in ancient indian time reckoning. Tithis are classified as good and bad and some results attached to them. The concept of Tithi is in existance means - * Astronomy and Astrology was in existence * The division of zodiac into 360 degree was in existance (because eacj Tithi spans 12 degree) * Methods to calculate the position of Sun, Moon and Planets and predictive astrology was well in place. Good to know that all this was true even in the far ancient period of Taittiriya Upanishad itself. Even the simple use of the word "Atithi" proves it, because Atithi means - One who comes without considering Tithi. (This means that there was a custom of considering/selecting Tithi for everything during those days). Hum... It seems that this quote even has some astrological pointers! For example - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who crosses the Tithi is the god of the Universe (Moon is the god of the universe/zodiac). ATITHI = One who crosses the Tithi; DEVO = God; BHAVAH = Universe ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Those who crosses the Tithis are the gods of the Universe (Sun and Moon rules the the universe/zodiac).

ATITHI = One who crosses the Tithi; DEVO = God; BHAVAH = Universe ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Sun and Moon - Siva and Sakti - is behind everything in the Universe. Other meanings -------------------- Why this quote came to me today? What are the other meanings it can point to? ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Siva Siva Siva! Because Sanskrit dictionaries gives the meaning, Atithi = Siva; Devo = Siva; BhavaH= Siva as well! There is an astrological saying - "Tithi Sareeram" (Tithi is body). If Tithi is body then Atithi is non-body or 'one without body'. If Tithi is Prakriti (nature/body) then Atithi is Purusha (energy/chaitanya; non-body). Thus - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One without body is Siva. Atithi = One without body; Bhavah = Is; Devo = Siva OR ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Purusha is Siva. Atithi = Purusha; Bhavah = Is; Devo = Siva OR Atithi Devo can mean 'one who considers guest as God' and Bhava can mean 'this world' or 'Universe'. Thus - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who considers guest as God take birth in this world (to serve the people - and thus to fulfill his wish - again and again) There are two kinds of Yajna (dedicated work) - Deva yajna and Nri-yajna. Deva yajna = Worship of God Nri-yajna = Worship of man; worship of humanity; serving the society. Thus - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Worship of humanity (serving the society) is the most important dedication/prayer. As per Sanskrit dictionaries, Atithi can mean 'Anger'; Deva can mean Lightning and Bhava 'God'. Thus - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Lightening is the anger of god. Atithi=Anger; Deva=Lightning; Bhava = God Why 'Atithi' (guest) is called so? The answer is present in the following Nirukta quote - Atithi = Atati gaschati na tishtati iti Atithi (Comes, goes and do not stay - and that is why he is called 'guest'). This descritpion suit well to 'Death' as well. Death comes and goes and do not stay. So - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Death is god; Death is divine; or even 'Death is the ultimate truth on earth'. As per one definition, 'Deva' is called so because 'Devete iti deva' (One who plays is God). Thus -ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who plays is God.ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Purush is the one who plays with the Universe.ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = God plays with the world (The play of God is present behind everything) If Tithi is body then Atithi is soul. Thus - ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Soul is light (There is light inside) Atithi = soul; devo = light; Bhavah = is Soul know the righteous path inside and the directions it follow are always correct. This should not be limited to this. Contemplating on on even the direct meaning of the quote 'Atithi devo bhavah' (guest is divine) can bring-out numerous arguments and thoughts in support of and against. Even the question "Guest is divine or not?" can be controversial. And now we see there could be much more to it. Just sharing some passing thoughts with all. Love and regards,Sreenadh

Dear Sreenadh ji,

You are right. The actual meaning is -

That one who comes suddenly and without informing, is to be treated as

God.

We normally know which tithi is going to come when. In this case when a

guest turns without any pre message given to us ( a - tithi) , then it

means he has to be respected like The Venerated.

regards,

Bhaskar.

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH

Let us abbreviate it to ADH now for easy reference.

The layman's translation is 'Guest is God' or the stupid Indian

tourism's version of the the same, 'customer is king' does not depict

the true intent of the above quote. May be the words 'guests are

divine' could better depicts its primary meaning.

History:

----------

This quote is taken from the Taittiriya Upanishad is one of the

older, "primary" Upanishads. Wikipedia states (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atithi_Devo_Bhav )

as follows -

//It is the verse in the Taittiriya Upanishad that says "Matru devo

bhava, Pitru devo bhava, Acharya devo bhava, Atithi devo bhava". Means

One should worship Mother, Father, Teacher and Guests as God.

Tithi in Sanskrit means a date. In ancient time when means of

communication were limited and it was not possible to anticipate date

of arrival of guest the word "Atithi" was coined to depict a visiting

person who had no fixed date of arrival or departure. "Devo" means God

and Bhav means Be/Is, literally meaning "Guest is God"

There is another interpretation very different from the above//

That was bit for informative - but still not good enough for us, it

seems. :) What are these "Other (possible) interpretations" Wikipedia

is pointing to? Is there any astrological relevance to this quote? Why

it came to my mind on this Maha Siva Ratri day? When we start to

contemplate new info naturally gets revealed by itself! Let us see what

follows.

Astrological meanings

---------------------------

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH

'Tithi' (the lunar day) comes into existence by the longitudinal

difference of Sun and Moon. It is one of the base parameters used in

ancient indian time reckoning. Tithis are classified as good and bad

and some results attached to them. The concept of Tithi is in

existance means -

* Astronomy and Astrology was in existence

* The division of zodiac into 360 degree was in existance (because

eacj Tithi spans 12 degree)

* Methods to calculate the position of Sun, Moon and Planets and

predictive astrology was well in place.

Good to know that all this was true even in the far ancient period

of Taittiriya Upanishad itself. Even the simple use of the word

"Atithi" proves it, because Atithi means - One who comes without

considering Tithi. (This means that there was a custom of considering/selecting

Tithi for everything during those days). Hum... It seems that this

quote even has some astrological pointers! For example -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who crosses the Tithi is the god of the

Universe (Moon is the god of the universe/zodiac).

ATITHI = One who crosses the Tithi; DEVO = God; BHAVAH = Universe

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Those who crosses the Tithis are the gods of the

Universe (Sun and Moon rules the the universe/zodiac).

ATITHI = One who crosses the Tithi; DEVO = God; BHAVAH = Universe

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Sun and Moon - Siva and Sakti - is behind

everything in the Universe.

Other meanings

--------------------

Why this quote came to me today? What are the other meanings it can

point to?

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Siva Siva Siva!

Because Sanskrit dictionaries gives the meaning, Atithi = Siva; Devo =

Siva; BhavaH= Siva as well!

There is an astrological saying - "Tithi Sareeram" (Tithi is body).

If Tithi is body then Atithi is non-body or 'one without body'. If

Tithi is Prakriti (nature/body) then Atithi is Purusha

(energy/chaitanya; non-body). Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One without body is Siva.

Atithi = One without body; Bhavah = Is; Devo = Siva OR

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Purusha is Siva.

Atithi = Purusha; Bhavah = Is; Devo = Siva OR

Atithi Devo can mean 'one who considers guest as God' and Bhava can

mean 'this world' or 'Universe'. Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who considers guest as God take birth in this

world (to serve the people - and thus to fulfill his wish - again and

again)

There are two kinds of Yajna (dedicated work) - Deva yajna and

Nri-yajna.

Deva yajna = Worship of God

Nri-yajna = Worship of man; worship of humanity; serving the society.

Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Worship of humanity (serving the society) is the

most important dedication/prayer.

As per Sanskrit dictionaries, Atithi can mean 'Anger'; Deva can mean

Lightning and Bhava 'God'. Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Lightening is the anger of god.

Atithi=Anger; Deva=Lightning; Bhava = God

Why 'Atithi' (guest) is called so? The answer is present in the

following Nirukta quote -

Atithi = Atati gaschati na tishtati iti Atithi (Comes, goes and do not

stay - and that is why he is called 'guest').

This descritpion suit well to 'Death' as well. Death comes and goes

and do not stay. So -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Death is god; Death is divine; or even 'Death is

the ultimate truth on earth'.

As per one definition, 'Deva' is called so because 'Devete iti deva'

(One who plays is God). Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = One who plays is God.

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Purush is the one who plays with the Universe.

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = God plays with the world (The play of God is

present behind everything)

If Tithi is body then Atithi is soul. Thus -

ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH = Soul is light (There is light inside)

Atithi = soul; devo = light; Bhavah = is

Soul know the righteous path inside and the directions it follow are

always correct.

This should not be limited to this. Contemplating on on even the

direct meaning of the quote 'Atithi devo bhavah' (guest is divine) can

bring-out numerous arguments and thoughts in support of and against.

Even the question "Guest is divine or not?" can be controversial. And

now we see there could be much more to it.

Just sharing some passing thoughts with all.

Love and regards,

Sreenadh

Dear Devisingh ji, //> Atithi Devo Bhav---One who transcendence Tithi it Bhav/become Dev --so > Jyotish can be applied on All Human till they are human and trying to > transcendence to attain Bhagvatata ....// Ha..Ha.. cute! Atithi Devo Bhava! [Tithi = Body; Atithi = one without body; Bhava = is; Devo = God/Divine/Divine beings] Thus, Atithi Devo bhava = The one without body is a divine being (Deva; and astrology does not apply to him). Here, since Tithi is an astrology related term, Tithi symbolically stands for astrology as well. Thus it means, for divine being [non-human supreme being or those who attained devatra (became Jeevan mukta through enlightenment) ] for them astrology does not apply! May be it also means that 'Tithi manushyo bhava' [Astrology is applicable to human beings only; i.e. only to those who are not enlightened yet!] Tithi = body. Those who transcend body (the feeling that I am this body) become divine beings (dev) - astrology is not for them. Those who are yet to transcend the body (we all are so; those who think that we are body) they are all normal human beings (not dev; may be manushya or even asura) - astrology is for them! Yap, you puts it all in two lines - beautiful! That is an interesting interpretation! :)Love and regards,Sreenadh , devisigh <devisingh.rajput wrote:>> Dear Sreenadh JI,> > A good chain of thoughts.....> Below is my thought out of Box...> > Atithi Devo Bhav---One who transcendence Tithi it Bhav/become Dev --so > Jyotish can be applied on All Human till they are human and trying to > transcendence to attain Bhagvatata ....> > ------------------> Regards,> Devisingh> > sreesog wrote:> > > >> > Dear All,> > I don't know why today the words "Atithi Devo Bhavah" came to my > > mind, and I was contemplating on the same, not from the normal > > perspective but may be some out-of-the-box view.> > ATITHI DEVO BHAVAH> > Let us abbreviate it to ADH now for easy reference. > > The layman's translation is 'Guest is God' or the stupid Indian > > tourism's version of the the same, 'customer is king' does not depict > > the true intent of the above quote. " Atithi Devo Bhav'

This has got certain connotations and a message. Normally guests inform

us beforehand when they are coming to our place. This when means the

Date or the tithi (As the word used to denote date in the older time

shwne Sanskrit was used).

So when a Guest comes without informing the date (Atithi) of his

arrival, he must be treated as one would treat a God.

regards/Bhaskar.

Dear Bhaskar ji, Possibly we all agree with you and you are right as well. But here the intent of the exercise was NOT TO find the straight and simple meaning but to find something new out of the ordinary; something that can give us some new info and a fresh perspective. And I hope that the exercise did provide some good pointers. For example took at the revelation about the existence of practical, useful and popular astrological astrological wisdom that was in use DURING VEDIC PERIOD (before BC 3000?) itself by a simple word "Atithi" (Guest), which the foreigners may simple ignore! Look at the info given below -//'Tithi' (the lunar day) comes into existence by the longitudinal difference of Sun and Moon. It is one of the base parameters used> in ancient indian time reckoning. Tithis are classified as good and

bad and some results attached to them. The concept of Tithi is in> existance means - * Astronomy and Astrology was in existence * The division of zodiac into 360 degree was in existance (because each Tithi spans 12 degree) * Methods to calculate the position of Sun, Moon and Planets and predictive astrology was well in place. Good to know that all this was true even in the far ancient period of Taittiriya Upanishad itself. Even the simple use of the word "Atithi" proves it, because Atithi means - One who comes without considering Tithi. (This means that there was a custom of considering/selecting Tithi for everything during those days).// Let us remember that it is all based on the simple word "Atithi" (guest) which anyone must have ignored or side-tracked as 'simple'. But if one is ready to look with a fresh perspective, (for every indian familiar with such systems, beliefs and a feel for that astrological perspective), it brings such a wealth of info that it gives us a window into "the history of predictive astrology and its development"; "the history of astronomy and its development". Actually the existence of the word "Atithi" or "Muhurta" is simply ENOUGH to prove the existence of predictive astrology during BC 3000! But such facts fools like AKK fails to see and understand! The whole effort of that thought stream was not to educate public about the meaning of a quote, but to point to the usefulness of a fresh and right perspective into the 'already existing and available information'. :) Such write-ups are NOT intended at learning or teaching, but instead intended at "learning to learn" or "teaching to teach" or even "teaching to learn" or "learning to teach" ;) All the permutation combinations and all the possibilities are relevant - and that is what 'thought' and 'logic' is! The Sanskrit word for logic is 'Ukti' and its defenition 'Unakteeti Yukti' (one that which connects - things with one another - is called Ukti). And it is such lost but relevant connections are what we are looking for. :) We intend to provide the spark and the thread of connections should ignite itself in this net connect group () by considering all the possible permutation combinations and playing with them - have fun as well the surprise of own intuition! Dear Sreenadh JI,

Thanks for appreciation.....

I must say there is nothing from me except logic........I do not have

thoughts all thoughts are of others (could be anyone..here is you),This

is one of Reason apart from other to join group.

Ha..Ha.. cute!

Atithi Devo Bhava! [Tithi = Body; Atithi = one without body; Bhava =

is; Devo = God/Divine/Divine beings]

Thus, Atithi Devo bhava = The one without body is a divine being

(Deva; and astrology does not apply to him).

Here, since Tithi is an astrology related term, Tithi symbolically

stands for astrology as well. Thus it means, for divine being

[non-human supreme being or those who attained devatra (became Jeevan

mukta through enlightenment) ] for them astrology does not apply!

May be it also means that 'Tithi manushyo bhava' [Astrology is

applicable to human beings only; i.e. only to those who are not

enlightened yet!]

Tithi = body.

Those who transcend body (the feeling that I am this body) become

divine beings (dev) - astrology is not for them.

Those who are yet to transcend the body (we all are so; those who

think that we are body) they are all normal human beings (not dev; may

be manushya or even asura) - astrology is for them!

Yap, you puts it all in two lines - beautiful! That is an interesting

interpretation! :)

Sreenadh

Good to know that all this was true even in the far ancient period of

Taittiriya Upanishad itself. Even the simple use of the word

"Atithi" proves it, because Atithi means - One who comes without

considering Tithi. (This means that there was a custom of

considering/selecting Tithi for everything during those days).//

Let us remember that it is all based on the simple word "Atithi"

(guest) which anyone must have ignored or side-tracked as 'simple'. But

if one is ready to look with a fresh perspective, (for every indian

familiar with such systems, beliefs and a feel for that astrological

and playing with them - have fun as well the surprise of own intuition!

(In astrology intuition is 'practiced'! I don't think there is any

other branch of knowledge that asks and provides one with methods to

'practice intuition'! Anyway, but that is a subject outside the scope

You are welcome. :)

division??//

I haven't written one about the same till now, even though lot of

inputs about the same is possible not only by me but also many members

in this group.

//> --Vishnottari dasha division logic??//

The same is true about the above point as well. But there ran a

thread regarding the same in this group once or twice and many logics

got presented by many in this group. I just happened to find one among

the lot in the archive, and here is the URL to that thread: /message/24542

Hope you will enjoy it. :)

Love and regards,

Sreeandh
