Namaste friends,

I can suggest the following bare minimum homam procedure to those who have a problem with Sanskrit and find the homam manuals daunting. This is the absolute minimum one can do. If done sincerely everyday for 20 min or more, even this procedure can have a very good impact on one's spiritual pursuit.

* * *

Materials needed: Homa kundam, wooden/copper/ silver spoon/ladle, melted ghee and pieces of dried coconut (or wood or dried cowdung cakes).

(0) Sit facing east and place homa kundam in front of you.

(1) Place some dried coconut pieces or wood or dried cowdung cake pieces in homa kundam (fire pit).

(2) Light a camphor and place it in the homa kundam while saying "om bhuurbhuvassuvarom" and make sure that the pieces placed in homa kundam catch fire.

(3) Pour ghee drops with a wooden/copper/ silver spoon/ladle in the fire while saying the following:

om prajaapataye svaahaa

om indraaya svaahaa

om agnaye svaahaa

om somaaya svaahaa

om bhuurbhuvassuvaH svaahaa

(4) Thinking of Ganesha in your mind, pour ghee drops in fire while saying the following:

om gam gaNapataye namaH svaahaa

om gam gaNapataye namaH svaahaa

om gam gaNapataye namaH svaahaa

om gam gaNapataye namaH svaahaa

(5) Pick any deity and any mantra. Thinking of the deity of the mantra, pour ghee drops (or any other valid offering - see manual) while saying the mantra. Just add svaahaa at the end of the mantra. If the mantra already has a svaahaa at the end, there is no need to add one more svaahaa.

It is also fine to pick a collection of verses (e.g. Vishnu sahasra naama stotram, Lakshmi ashtottara sata naama stotram, Lalita sahasra naama stotram, Aditya hridayam, Subrahmanyashtakam etc). At the end of each verse, add svaahaa and make an offering in fire. When the stotram ends, you can go back to the beginning and repeat.

Do this for as much time as you want to. But make sure that you do this step for atleast 10-15 minutes.

(6) When you are done, pour ghee drops in fire while saying the following:

om bhuuH svaahaa

om bhuvaH svaahaa

om suvaH svaahaa

om bhuurbhuvassuvaH svaahaa

om shrii viShNave svaahaa

om namo rudraaya pashupataye svaahaa

(7) Try to surrender your mind as completely to god as you can. Sit absolutely still and meditate for a few minutes with any mantra.

Done!

Namaste Narsimhaji,

First of all, thankyou very much for this 'Bare minimum homam procedure.'I

finally started doing homam on Narsimha jayanti day as i could somehow not start

on Akshay Tritiya.I have now done homam two days in a row, and it has been a

very fulfilling experience, esp. the first time.

The mantra i did homam was Gayatri mantra.I have one query here-

I did homam for around 10 mins. But i did not count,ie. i do not know as to how

many mantras i did as i was not using a mala,is it alright?or should i be

counting and doing --say one whole mala?

Also, as it was Narsimha jayanti the first day,i gave 5 aahutis for

Narsimha, and on the second day,it being Kurma jayanti, i offered for Kurma

devta.

On both days, i offered a few aahutis for Kuldevi,LakshmiNarayan and

UmaMaheshwar---is that ok,Or should i be doing homam with only one mantra? Also,i

used 'svaha' after the mantra without namah,i hope i did right

Thank you once again,

Sunita.

Namaste Vinitaji,

Congratulations on your getting started! I pray you are able to continue this

forever.

You can do ahooti for any diety, provided you start with the ahooti of the

pradhaan/main diety. Rest all is OK. Also, we need to add svaahaa at the end of

the mantra even if it has namah in it ... like om namah shivaaya would become om

namah shivaaya svaahaa.

Doing ahooti for Kula/Graama deva/devi is an excellent idea and I do it too.

Infact you might want to remember them (along with your parents/and the rishi

who originated your gotra) when you start the homam procedure, but right after

Shuklambhara dharam mantra, which one utters at the start of the homam

procedure.

Hope this helps.
