Indian Gov Announces Veda Vyas Awards

The University Grants Commission has announced the following as
Awardees of national Swami Pranavananda Saraswati Awards, National
Hari Om Ashram Trust Awards and National Veda Vyas Sanskrit Awards
for 2004.
UGC NATIONAL HARI OM ASHRAM TRUST AWARDS
Awarded Every year to outstanding scientists from 1974 onwards. The
Award carries Rs. 50,000/- and a Citation.
Sir C.V. Raman Award: Physical Sciences
Prof. D.D. Sharma, Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, for his "contribution in the field
of condensed matter physics related to electronic and magnetic
properties of strongly correlated electron systems."
Homi J. Bhabha Award for Applied Sciences
Prof. N. Balakrishnan, Division of Information Sciences, Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, for his "seminal contributions in
areas of computational electromagnetic, aerospace electronics, radar
meteorology and polarimetric radars, supercomputing and high
performance networking and information security."
Prof. Sankar Kumar Nath, Dept. of Geology and Geophysics, Indian
Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, for his "contribution in
developing techniques of geophysical exploration and in the
strategies towards better mitigation of disaster in mines as well as
earthquake hazards."
Meghnad Saha Award in Theoretical Sciences
Prof. Rahul Pandit, Dept. of Physics, Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore for his "pioneering contributions to a wide variety of
challenging problems in statistical mechanics, condensed-matter
theory, phase transitions, and nonlinear dynamics."
Prof. Maithili Sharan, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Indian
Institute of Technology, New Delhi, for his "outstanding
contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of environmental,
physiological and computational fluid mechanics."
Jagdish Chandra Bose Award for Life Sciences
Prof. Vinod Kochupillai, Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital (IRCH),
A.I.I.M.S, New Delhi, for his "contributions in hematopoiesis and in
developing protocols for the management of various malignancies."
Prof. Mathus R.N. Murthy, Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian
Insitute of Science, Bangalore, for his work on "novel computational
procedures for the comparison of protein structures, analysis of
atomic displacement parameters and for key crystallographic
operations."
Outstanding Social Scientists/Scientists for Interaction between
Science and Society
Prof. Ajit K. Kembhavi, IUCAA, Pune, for his "contributions in the
popularization of astronomy and astrophysics in colleges and
schools."
II UGC NATIONAL SWAMI PRANAVANANDA SARASWATI AWARDS
Awarded every year since 1985 onwards, for outstanding
scholarly/scientific work which has made important contributions to
human knowledge and his thrown light on the problems in a new
manner. The Award carries Rs. 50,000/- and a Citation.
1. Education
Prof. M. Anandakrishnan Former Vice-Chancellor, Anna
University, Molours Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, for
his "contributions in the development of technology education in the
country."
Prof. Amrik Singh, New Delhi for his "books and writings
on key issues in Universities and Collegiate education in a global
perspective."
2. Economics
Dr. Vishwanath Pandit, Prof. of Economics, Sri Sathya Sai Institute
of higher Learning, prasanthi Nilayam, Anantapur (A.P.) for
his "contributions in area of macroeconomic theory and policy and in
developing advanced tools of mathematics and econometrics for
rigorous analysis or macroeconomic policy alternatives."
Dr. Dilip M. Nachane, Dept. of Economics, Indira Gandhi Institute of
Development Research, Mumbai, for his "contributions in economic
theory, applied economics and monetary policy in the Indian context.
3. Environmental Sciences and Ecology
Prof. R. Sukumar, Centre for Ecological, Sciences, Indian Institute
of Science, Bangalore, for his "contributions in the field of
tropical ecology and climate change."
Political Science
Prof. K. Seshadari, C. Rajeshwar Rao Foundation for Social
Progress, Kondapur, Hyderabad, for his "contributions in the concept
and practice of Political Linkages and Rural Development, Marxism
and Political Sciences, Stagnation and Change in Indian Society, and
Rural Unrest in India."
Prof. C.A. Perumal, Prof. Emeritus, Dept. of Politics and Public
Administration, University of Madras, Chennai, for
his "contributions in developing positive approaches towards welfare
state, Caste Politics in Tamil Nadu, Center-State and Inter-State
Relations in South India."
Sociology
Prof. Anand Chakravarti, Dept of Sociology, Delhi School of
Economics, University of Delhi, for his "work on detailed
ethnographic analysis as the method of producing knowledge."
III UGC NATIONAL VEDA VYAS SANSKRIT AWARD
Awarded every year to outstanding teacher for the excellent
contribtion in teaching/research/innovation/new programmes and
promotion of Sanskrit language. The Award carries rs. 1,00,000/-
and a Citation.
Dr. (Mrs.) Kamal Anand, Honorary Prof. (Sanskrit Literature)
Vishveshvaranand Vedic Research Institute, Hoshiarpur, Punjab; and
Principal, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, University of Delhi, for her "work
in popularizing Sanskrit as an important thread of the texture of
Indian Culture in the fields of Literature, Theatre, Research and
Writing."
The Indian nationals working the university system or those who have
been associated with the Universities or institutions recognized for
research/advanced study, are eligible for the award. The
nominations for the award are invited each year by the University
Grants Commission from the universities/institutions of national
importance, etc. The nominations are scrutinized by a committee of
experts in the specified areas. The recommendations made by the
committee are approved by the Commission.
