Shri Vasishta Ganapati Muni on Ucchista Ganapati Tattva

In a certain blog i have noticed some " objectionable " literature

on Ucchista Ganapati Tattva. The blogger goes to the extent

of deciphering the Ucchista Ganapati Mantra whose translation

goes like this:

Om Take away, and sing, Pisachi (female demon or witch) while

tearing (or writing) with your hands, I offer myself to you

//

 

The poor guy translates the word " pishachi " in Ucchista Ganapati

mantra to be female demon or witch.

 

My sincere request to such " scholars " is please be very very

careful while giving out the tantric knowledge to the

people in forum.

 

IT LEADS TO DEVASTATING EFFECTS TO THE PREACHER AS WELL AS

TO THE FORUMITES WHO READ THOSE MISLEADING ARTICLES.

 

Hence, an attempt has been made to present before you from

the musings of Shri Vashishta Ganapati Muni and Shri Kapali

Sastry on the Ucchista Ganapati Tattva.

Musings of Shri Vashishta Ganapati Muni on Ucchista Ganapati

The universe is created in the form of Ganas and for each gana, there is a

ganapati and vinayaka. In Mahashoda Nyasa of sakta tantras, there are as many

ganeshas as there are matrika aksharas, letters of the alphabet, which are 51 in

number.

 

Ganapati in the form of infant is called Bala Ganapati where Bala

indicates the possibilities of the growth and future unfoldment

for the aspirant. Ganapati as a dancer is the Nartana Ganapati

which indicates dynamic harmonious activity geared towards progress.

Out of the personalities of the Godhead, one particular form of

Ganapati is highly " misleading " personality called " Ucchista Ganapati " .

 

Ganapati represents the Primordial Sound from which all the worlds have taken

birth. He is also the Lord of Spoken Word - the Master of Speech. This Spoken

Word " descends " from the " Ether " (parame vyoman). Hence, this Ehter or Parame

Vyoman is the native of the primordial sound where mantras are hidden in the

higher planes and manifest in their descent to the last step which is the human

speech.

 

The " ucchista " in literal sense means " the pollution caused by saliva " . No doubt

" ucchista " is connected with the tongue which is the physical organ of speech.

But Tantra Sastra is usually known

for its pictursque and symbolic nomenclature in its attempt to

be occult.

 

Shri Vashishta Ganapati Muni & Shri Kapali Sastry wonderfully

quote here the Ucchista Sukta of Atharva Veda saying that

in the vedic text " ucchista " is used in the sense of

" The Residual Above " ie., " ut-sista " . Because, any number of

creation cannot diminish the infinitude of the Supreme Being that

forever " remains " above the creation which descends from it.

When the Supreme Force, Shakti of the Infinite Being

above deploys certain energies for the creation of the worlds,

He remains still inexhaustible and rests there forming the

foundation above " upari bhudna " , for the creation in its

downward course.

 

Thus, the Word when expressed does not exhaust itself.

Ganapati, as para vak is seated in the Muladhara centre;

his elephant face is the form of Pranava - the Word that

perceives what is to be created, pasyanti vak. As expressed

word in the form of vaikhari vak, He is ucchista ganapati -

the Word with the Residual Above (Ut-sista).

 

The veda addresses the Ganapati also as having 2 mothers

(dvaimAturAya namah). Brahmanaspati has 2 mothers ie.,

dyau and prithivi and hence dvaimAturah.

 

Shri Ganapati Muni says:

jihvAsthalam nAtha vigAhamAnam

tvAmAhurucchiShTam iha cchalOktyA

ucchiShTatA chEttava rudrasUno

svAdhyAyaniShTIvanayo bhidhA kA

 

//

 

Lord, they call thee Ucchista in covert speech as thy

range is in the whole field of tongue. O Son of Rudra,

if the pollution caused by saliva can be attributed to thee

then what difference is there between spitting & vedic recitation?

 

Vashista Ganapati Muni gives explanation here that Ganapati being

Lord of Speech, in the physical body, his field of operation is

the Tongue and as ucchista is connected with the tongue;

the tantrics use the same word deliberately to explain the

inner significance.

 

Tantrics are fond of covert speech and misleading

the uninitiates.

 

Further, Vashista Ganapati Muni decodes the Vahana Rahasya of

Ganapati. Ganapati is usually seen riding on Mouse.

 

Ganapati Muni says:

sarvANi dhAnyAni cha bhakShayantam

dantaih Shitaih rdeva sahAyavantam

etam bilastham rasanAhvyam tE

vAham vido mUShaka mAm ananti

 

//

 

Lord, the learned men call this Tongue only as they vehicle Mushaka (mouse) as

it eats all corn, ably assisted by sharp teeth and lies in the hole of the

mouth.

 

Bhashya of Ganapati Muni:

 

The Mushaka, mouse is famed as the vehicle of Ganapati. As Ganapati

is the Lord of Speech, the fittest vehicle for him in the

physical body is the tongue. The mouth resembles a hole and

the toungue moves in and out, like a mouse peeping in and

out of the hole. No wonder, ancients used the symbol of a mouse

to bring home pictursquely the significance of the vehicle of

Lord of Speech.

 

Shri Kapali Sastriar quotes here a tamil verse:

 

// vAyile kudittha neerai ecchil enru sollurir

vAyile kudappu vedam enappadakkadavado //

 

Shri Ganapati Muni describes the esoteric

sense of Nartana & Bala Ganapati here:

nA khE yAti surO vA tvam chet kinchitudAsyam

adhArE vidadhAsi skandasyAgraja lAsyam //

 

O thou elder brother of Skanda (Subramanya),

slightly lifting up thy face, if thou performest

thy dance n the Adhara, man moves in the sky like

a God.

 

Ganapati Muni says here that Child denotes possible

growth and progress while dance denotes harmonious activity.

Godhead becomes active and grows in man. When Ganapati becomes

active in Muladhara, the person get full control of

the physical & earth-element. Then he no longer becomes

subject to its laws. He is even able to up in air and

achieve " Khechari Siddhi " .

 

It is to be noted that Shri Ganapati Muni was an upasaka of

Ucchista Ganapati in its purest form.

 

Many people claim that this form of Ganapati is only suitable

for vamacharis which is totally a wrong conception.
