Dear sharma,

One must be thorough with the principles and concepts Agni, Vayu,

Surya and Aditya. There is a difference between the concept of Surya

and Aditya. The ordinary 3-foot gayatri extols the Surya whereas the

4-foot Gayatri extols the Aditya which is the SUPREME TRUTH, which is

even hidden from Gods. Savitr presides over the Rising Sun. Surya

presides over both Rising and Setting Sun. But Aditya is BEYONG THE

PRINCIPLES OF SAVITR AND SURYA. Aditya is untouched from these

activities. And hence it is said to be residing in " richo akshare

parame vyoman " in Asya Vamasya Sukta of Rg Veda.

It is the " Bhargas " of " savitr " being meditated while chanting 3-foot

gayatri which inspires (prachodayat) our intellect (dhiyah). The 3-

foot gayatri is able to perceive the 3 principles of Agni, Vayu and

Surya. But to perceive the 4th foot which is the principle of

Aditya, Turiya Gayatri is the only refuge.

Turiya gayatri is the highly secret " chatushpada gayatri mantra "

which is even hidden from the Gods (pl. refer the 5th mantra of

Asyavamasya Sukta of Rg Veda (1:164)). And hence, it is called " parO

rajas…. " . What exactly is this is wonderfully explained by

Jagatguru Shankara in his commentary on Brihadaranyaka & Chandogya

Upanishad.

The ordinary Tripada Gayatri which we chant is of 24 letters whereas

the Turiya Gayatri is of 32 letters (1st pada of 8 letters is extra).

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad says " Bhumi (earth), Antariksha (middle

region), Dyou (heaven) is the 1st foot of Gayatri. Rg Veda,

Yajurveda, Sama Veda is the 2nd Foot of Gayatri. Prana, Apana, Vyana

is the 3rd Foot of Gayatri.

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad says:

" athAsyA EtatEva turIyam darshatam padam parO rajAya Esha tapati. Yad

vai chaturtham tat turIyam darshatam padamiti dadrishah iva hyEsha.

parO raja iti sarvamuhyEvaisha raja uparyupari tapati. Evam haiva

shriyA yashasAtapati yO(a)syA EtatEvam padam vEda "

" saishA gAyatrai tasminsturIyE darshatam padE parOrajasi

pratishThitA. Tatvai tatsatyE pratishThitam chakshurvai satyam ……… "

Gayatri is established in 4th pada, which is Seen as TRUTH and hence

it is called " parO rajas " . Since, what is Seen is true and hence

Gayatri is established in Truth. The Truth is supported by

Strength. Prana is the Strength. And hence, Gayatri protects

the " gayas " , the Prana. Since, it protects Prana, Apana, Vyana, it

is called Gayatri.

But the 4th foot of Gayatri is the " world beyond darkness " and has to

be " seen " or " perceived " through " intuition " and hence it is

called " akshare parame vyoman " .

As the name itself implies " Turiya Gayatri " , this vidya is imparted

only to Yatis. The householders are not permitted to chant this

Turiya Gayatri. The smartas have the adhikara only to chant

the " tripada gayatri " . Only Yatis coming from smarta background

having undergone the rites of purva mimamsa, veda adhyayana in their

previous asrama, get initiated in the Turiya Gayatri Vidya.

The upasakas who donot have the adhikara to chant this " turiya

gayatri vidya " , for them Srividya is the refuge. Srividya is for

grihasthas. The Srividya Panchadasi Mantra is on par with Turiya

Gayatri and hence Shri Bhaskararaya expounded this mantra in

his " varivasya rahasya " .

Non-dwijas & women are not permitted to chant the vedic tripada

gayatri mantra. But such restriction is not with Panchadasi Mantra.

And hence, Panchadasi is called the Gayatri of Shaktas.

If you are initiated in Srividya, I suggest you to read

the " varivasya rahasya " , tripuropanishad, tripuratapini Upanishad

bhashyas.

If you are not initiated in Srividya, I would suggest you to have a

serious study of Asyavamasya Sukta of Rg Veda (1 Mandala : 164th

Sukta). This sukta is a wonderful sukta envisioned by Sage

Dirghatamas.

If you did not learn this Sukta, please learn this sukta and chant

every day. Even Rg Vedic scholar who has undergone the Kramanta Pata

in Rg Veda is well versed with this sukta.

With regards,

sriram
