Dear Shree Raviji ,

Seeing your mail i tried to understand the words used by you as aforesaid,

again.

As i have only a nursery knowledge of Sanskrit , i tried to see the meaning of

the aforesaid three words Krupa, Prasada, and Katxa in the Apte's sanskrit

--English dictionary to understand the meaning of what you have written. What

was written is

Krupa means compassion --Prasada means favour and i could not locate Kataxa.

No where i could find a fixed meaning as losely used or comparing it removing

ignorance or giving knowledge and enlightment. May be some of the learned

members proficient in Sanskrit can throw some light on these words.

As earlier said each Jiva is evolving spiritually and our scriptures guarantee

moksha even to the Most condemned as no body is condemned ETERNALLY.

Depending on one`s, spiritual growth the grace or krupa or prasada may mean

different to different Jivas. In this context the entire 12th Chapter of DM is a

grace.

The DM itself can be quoted to support it. When Devi appeared and while

knowledge revealed was same for both the devotees of Devi -- the Kshatriya King

Suratha and Vyshya Samadhi -- the Vyshya chose the release from the attachment

of I ness and myness. -- Enlightenment whereas the King chose to go back to the

Kingdom and rule to be further re-born as " MANU -- SAVARNI " . ....... By this

itself it is very clear that grace means different to different jivas.

Regards

Respected Ganapathyji:

Thanks for taking your time to post this 4-part series. I will read

carefully and try understand your position.

As soon as you said ch12, I went and read the chapter. Only then I asked

you. I personally do not agree with the sticking to one-line dictionary

meaning of divine favor. It does not capture the notions that has been built

around this word in philosophy for this word.

Words take a very complex and deep interpretations over a course of time

and also depending on the emphasis. To give an example, in the book "Zen and

the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" which a very hard book on philosophy,

author takes the word "Quality" and tries to understand and explain it,

which runs to over 100+ pages. At the end of it you will see by that he

relates (at one level) to the cosmic princple like dharma (which bears or

dhArayati iti dharma) which supports the structure of cosmos*. I think

grace is a better canditate for that kind of discussion.

My original interest, was to find the exact verse which talks about "grace"

and the words that are translated as grace. Any phala shruti can be viewed

in that same way as you do. Lot of stotra-s do make such promises in the

phala shruti.

To say, you read and do such and such thing, and I will do such and such

thing as a phala for it, misses the mark for grace. It has an element of

grace in it. But misses it at many levels. In tamil, the term that comes

very close to grace is "aruL" -- but even "aruL" takes on many other shades

of meaning such as "blessing". To me the true aruL (grace) is that which

removes (maruL) confusion and (iruL) darkness of ignorance. I do not see

divine grace as a phala of reading a shloka. Divine grace probably comes

into play in directing the bhakta to read a particular work. Once you read

it and getting an associated phala, falls under karma phala.

I may be wrong. If I have any additional thoughts/questions on your series,

I will send you as a personal e-mail. Wish you all a very happy navarAtri.

Thanks

Ravi
