Default Turning around (Lord Ganesh and Lord Shiva/Srimati Parvati devi)

Haribol! Jai Ma!
Pranam.

I remember having read something a while ago regading Lord Shiva and
Parvati who requested their sons (Lord Ganesh and maybe Lord Skanda
or Subramanya, I can't remember) to perform some kind of contest
(circling the Universe 3 times if I am not mistaken). I cannot
remember what was the @price@ for the winner but Lord Ganesha turned
3 times around his parents and won.
Does anyone knows that story?
Thank you very much for any information because I would like to use
this story in a little offering to my guru.
Om Shanti!

Mukunda

Namaste,

There came a time when Lord Ganesha and Lord Skanda both desired
their own Shakti, and they approached Shiva-Shakti on the heights of
Kailas with their requests.

Essentially, Shiva has ultimate access to all Shakti, and this is
basically 3-fold ~ Riddhi (Fortune), Siddhi (Wisdom), and Gauri (the
pure shining body of Soma, itself, and the one true consort of the
Mahadeva).

The boon was quickly granted, and Riddhi and Siddhi (Lakshmi and
Sarasvati) were presented to the youthful twins, although one problem
remained.

Who deserved the hand of Riddhi, and who the hand of Siddhi?

A challenge was set, and both Ganesha and Skanda were commanded to
circle the whole Universe, and whoever returned first to the site
would have first choice of the two Shaktis.

Skanda started immediately, flying off at great speed; while Ganesha
sat in meditation at his parents feet.

While Skanda was yet involved in his circular exertions, Lord Ganesha
rose from his seat and walked three times around the Yugala of Shiva
and Parvati, and then he returned to bow at their feet once again.

Ganesha had indeed succeeded in winning the challenge; and, since he
had shown such unsurpassed devotion to his divine parents, Shiva
granted BOTH Devis to the Vinayaka Ganapati.

Skanda Karttikeya returned, exhausted but sure of his success, and he
was shocked to find that his brother had already been married to both
of the divine Shaktis.

Skanda became a Sannyasin and retired alone to a remote mountain-top;
and Ganesha's story is well known.

I have always loved this clever story about Ganesh,
but I heard the version that it was because the ganas
needed somebody who was more accessible to them than
Shiva, who was always off in samadhi and couldn't
mediate their problems for them without a lot of
sadhana first, to wake Him up! So they consulted
Vishnu about the problem and he advised them to choose
one or the other of Shiva's sons as their leader. To
decide which of them was most suitable for this task,
this challenge of "first one around the Universe gets
the job" was set for them.

Sometimes you put things very well. I liked the bit earlier about
Varuna as well.

Pranaam Mukunda,

Narada came across Shiva and Parvathi, with a golden ripe mango. He mentioned it
was very special. In order for with Ganesha or Subrahmanya to get it, Narada
asked both of them to win a contest. The target was to go around the world 3
times and the first one back will get the golden mango. Subrahmanya raced off on
his Vahana (transportation), his peacock, to race around the world three times.
Whereas Ganesha just revolved around Shiva and Parvathi three times, assuming
that they're the world. When Subrahmanya came back, he demanded for the reward,
but Narada set out the results and how it should go to Ganesha. And of course,
Subrahmanya gets angry, a very short tempered God he is; it takes a great level
of purity to worship him.

I hope this answered your question

Regards,
