I just heard Srila Prabhupada speaking about this. He says dharma
isn't merely faith, which can change, but it is actual fact--which is
eternal. The dharma (this word also means "intrinsic nature") of all
living beings is service to Krsna. This jaiva-dharma can never be erased;
it can only be defaced, here in worldly existence. According to Krsna,
faith is actually what we are (cf. Gita 17.3), yet it is poorly expressed
in bad association, such that a faithful person who is in the mode of
ignorance might believe that he is somehow making the world a better place
by steering a jetliner full of unsuspecting noncombatants into a densely
populated center of the whole world's trade.
In my understanding, it is because we have an authoritative, time
tested process for testing and purifyng our perverted faith that Krsna
consciousness is called "scientific." In other words, we have a theoretical
hypothesis, its experimental application (which, like other experiements,
involves strictly controlled conditions), and the conclusions we draw from
personal experience of the same. But this is about all it has in common
with most modern science--which is usually driven by pretty transparent
motives, as well as faith in the lower modes of material nature. Everyone
has faith; modern science often involves a severe perversion of this
faith. I think this is why Srila Prabhupada often strongly attacked such
scientists in his inimitably bold manner.
