This skillfully composed Sanskrit prayer is included at the beginning

of the chapter of 'Bhuvaneshvar Visit- by Lord Chaitanya' in the book-

'Chaitanya Charitavali', by Sri Prabhudatta Brahmachari,

glorifying the two Lords Hari and Hara together in a single beautiful

verse :

yau tau zankha kapAla bhUSita karau mAlAsthi mAla dhrau

devau dwarAvatI zmazAna nilayau nAgAri govAhanau

dvim yakSau bali dakSayajna mathanau zrI zailajA vallabhau

pApaM vo haratAM sadA hari-harau zrI vatsa gangAdharau

 

my translation of the verse:

 

Lord Hari's hand is adorned with the sacred conch,

while Lord Shiva held in hand the inauspicious skull.

Lord Hari is wearing 'vana mala', an attractive garland

of forest flowers, but from Lord Shankara's neck

an ugly chain of human bones is hanging.

 

While the ruler of opulent Dwaraka city being Lord Hari,

the ruler of frightful burial ground is Lord Shiva.

 

Hari has the enemy of serpents, Garuda, the king of birds

as His chosen vehicle to ride upon,

but Lord Shiva has the mighty bull as His riding vehicle.

 

Both of Them are famous for Their destruction of the great sacrificial

Yajnas- Hari, of the king Maha Bali and Shiva, of the king Daksha

Prajapati.

 

Lord Hari is the eternal Beloved of Mother Lakshmi Devi

while Lord Shiva's Divine Consort is Mother Parvati Devi.

 

On the chest of Lord Hari the 'Srivatsa' mark is revealing

His great compassion for His souls.

On the head of Lord Shankara, the sacred celestial river Ganges

is promising liberation for His countless devotees.

 

May this Divine Couple,

the two great Lords,

Hari and Hara

kindly destroy forever all sins as well as

transgressions committed against Them.

Two years ago on my birthday (Jan 1st, 2005) at Bhubaneshvar, Orissa,

I paid my humble visit in the morning to Sri Lingaraja (Lord Shiva)'s

temple. There were huge crowds at the temple on that national holiday.

Seemed like many devotees wanted to begin their New Year with prayers

at the famous Shiva temple.

The inner sacred chamber (garbha alaya) has only one small door for

entrance as well as exit, a lot of pushing and squeezing is

unavoidable while entering and leaving.

During the stampede that occurred inside the chamber, I had slipped

down on the wet floor and fallen upon Lord's deity (Shiva Linga), in

the holy linga form!

 

The priest who was performing 'abhishekam' (holy bath with milk) to

the Lord helped me to get up and kindly lifted me from the wet Shiva

linga!

This is the way our naughty Lord blessed (baptized?) me too with His

holy waters on my birthday!

" I read somewhere that in Skanda Purana, Bhubaneshwar is actually

supposed to be the 'gateway' to Jagannath-Puri-dhama. Just like in

Vrndavana we are supposed to pay our respects to Shiva [Gopishwara]

before undertaking parikrama, so visiting Shiva at Bhubaneshwara is

supposed to be done before going to Jagannath Puri.

 

Just thought I'd share that with you. It appears to be one of the few

tirthas where " Shiva and Vishnu " are united in purpose. "

NAMASTE I felt very happy to see this valuable and beautiful

comparison of Bhagavan Vishnu and Bhagavan Sadasiva from you kind

message

In this connection I am remabering a sloka of Mahakavi Tikkana

who was a member in trio by whooom the MAHABHARATA was translated in

to TELUGU language. This famous poet establisshed HARI HARAADWAITA

(Hari and Hara are one) Sidhhanta.

 

" Kimasthi maalaam kimu koustubhamvaa

kim kaalakutaha kimuvaa yasodaa stanyam

tava swaadu vada prabho mye "

 

O! Lord! Please tell me your will and wish. Do you want to

wear 'Asthimaalaa' (neckles of bones) or 'Koustubha mani'? O !

Devine Child! what is your preference in drinking horrible poison

named as 'KALAKUTA' or the breast milk of mother Yasoda?

By the above beautiful sloka we may try to understand the

divine light of united Hari and Hara which leads us to eternal state.

Bearing 'earth' under the semblance of the ashes smeared on his body,

'water' in the semblance of the Heavenly River Ganges which flows from

his hair,

'fire' under the semblance of the eye on his forehead which burns with

the fire of his austerities,

'air' in the semblance of the Snake-Lord's breath ,

'ether'(the atmosphere) in the semblance of the cavity inside great

Aghora's mouth-

thus 'perpetually manifesting the universe through the five elements'

(paJca bhUta), may the moon-crested-one (Shiva) grant you success! "

 

Namo bhUta-nAtha!

 

The author of 'Gita Govinda'- an esteemed Vaishnava Rasa Kavya, is

thought to be the worshipper of Lord Shiva by many scholors.

 

" According to this verse from 'saduktikarNAmRita' in which Jayadeva

invoked Lord Shiva - Bimanbehari Majumdar has challenged the idea that

Jayadeva was a Vaishnava at all:'he was really a worshipper of Shiva

and at the same time took delight in depicting the amours of Radha and

Krishna as an erotic mystic.' And S.K. Chattarji comes to the

conclusion that Jayadeva was a 'paJcopAsaka-smArta' who later raised

to the status of Vaishnava saint.'

There are so many stories explaining the connection between Gita

Govinda of Jayadeva and Lord Jagannatha in the same book.

In the verse of Tikkana (viraata parva of Mahaabhaarata) quoted in one of the entries, I find few words missing:

 

kim asthimaalaam kimu kosthubham vaa parishkriyaayaam bahu manyase?

 

twam kim kaalakoota: kimu vaa yasodaastanyam tava swaadu vada prabho me//
