"The date of 3 April 509 BCE was validated by the tradition of th

Guruparampara of Kanchi, Dwaraka and Puri Shankara Peethams.

Epigraphical evidence of King Sudhanva, a contemporary of Adi Shankara

and textual evidences were cited which confirmed the date. The

Mandukya Upanishad bhashya of Adi Shankara refers to the circulation

of kaarshaapana (kaarshaapana has four component units unlike the four

paadas of a cow), this reference to kaarshaapana establishes the date

of Adi Shankara as 6th century BCE until which period the currency was

in vogue."

A seminar was held in Mumbai by the Yojana on October 20 and 21, 2002

on the dates of Adi Shankara, Gautama Buddha and Acarya Canakya. There

was unanimity among the scholars on the date of Adi Shankara. This was

endorsed in a historic public event held in Mumbai on Jan. 20, 2003 in

the august presence of Sri Jayendra Saraswati of Kanchi Shankara Math,

Sri Ananda Swaroop of Dwaraka Matha and representatives from Puri and

Goverdhan Mathas.

 

The seminar proceedings including an essay by the late Sri

Chandrasekhara Saraswati of Kanchi Shankara Matha was brought out by

Veda Shastra Pandita Raksha Sabha, Mumbai (Sri V. Shanker of South

Indian Educational Society).

 

The date of 3 April 509 BCE was validated by the tradition of th

at the time of birth of Adi Shankara based on the text available in

Brihat Shankara Vijaya and Punya Loka Manjari also establishes that on

3 April 509 BCE Adi Shankara was born in Nandanan year, Vis'akha

month, Panchami tithi, Aadra Nakshatra, Karkataka lagna. The skymaps

produced on Planetarium Software reveal Jupiter and Ketu are in

vrs'cika (Scorpia); Mars in Dhanus (Sagittarius); Saturn is in Meena

(Pisces); Sun and Mercury are in Mesha (Aries); Venus and Raghu are in

Vr.shabha (Taurus); Moon is in Mithuna (Gemini). Thus the continuous

lineage and paramparaa of four Shankara Peethams of the four corners

of the country are consistent with the textual date of the birth of

Adi Shankara.

 

The seminar in Mumbai adopted a resolution that the Adi Shankara

Jayanthi Day should be celebrated all over the world on Vis'akha

panchami day. This year (2005) is the 2514th Jayanthi of Adi Shankara

Bhagavatpaada.

 

This determination will necessitate a further review of the dates of

Gautama Buddha, Kalidasa and Acarya Canakya in the overall chronology

of ancient Bharatiya Itihaas and the evolution of Hindu thought in the

country in many facets of spiritual and temporal endeavours.
