[world-vedic] The Dating of the Srimad Bhagavatam

Namaste,

The Puranas mark a bridge between what is classed as late-Harappan (ce.1900BCE)

when the saraswati River dried up and the early Gupta period (400AD).

"Gods, Sages and Kings" By David Frawley and "In Search of the Dradle of

Civilisation"

by Georg Feuerstein also speak on the dates according to Historical Evidences as

well.

It appears generally by their dates, which ar based on Astronmical and

Archeological facts, that

the Vedas date between 7000BCE and ended sometyime around 2000BCE, with the

early Upanishads

and Brahmanas overlapping as early as 3000BCE.

But there were also earlier Puranas as old as the Vedas from which the present

have come down from.

As to Bhagwat Purana or Srimad Bhagwatam, it appears to have been composed after

Krishna's death (either around 3000 or 1500BCE) and was editied down to 500AD

in the late-Gupta era, when we see Hinduism was at it's height again and taking

over Buddhism. But most of it, going by the Purana itself, dates from at least

3500 years ago.

Traditionalists prefer 3000BCE as the date of it's Composition, or 1500BCE, but

this

being a traditional date would be the start of when it began. David Frawley

suggests this

also (Gods sages and Kings, P.132), as the Puranas are set in the Court of

Janamejaya,

but were part of Oral traditions and Myths (as also recorded in Mahabharat and

Ramayan)

that date back to Vedic times (ie. the stories about Prahlad, Vamana etc.)

Hope this helps!

Hari Om.

>(Bhagavata Purana).

Namaste. I working in a research for my thesis about the history of Srimad

Bhagavatam. Let me send to you my answer to Mr. Uddhava:

" Now you are touching a interesting topic, that confront the traditional

vaisnava view of history and the modern secular paradigm of dates about the

sacred scriptures of India. Let me try to suggest some points to you (and

please forgiven me by my worse English, It is no my speak; but Spanish)

"after arduous study of the bhagavatam, I still find it rather implausible

>that it was compiled 5000 years ago. "

I am working in a research about the real date of Srimad-Bhagavatam like

my thesis of . degree in Linguistic and Literature and the U A de C.

Therefore my discovers show that is I still find rather implausible that the

Bhagavata was not compiled 5000 years ago.

1.-Scholars differ as to the date of the composite of Bhagavata (SB). Dr.

Sambidananda Das advice that: "It is generally believed that it was written

either in the 9th or 10th century". Before, the older hypercritics like

Colebrooke and Wilson considered it a fabrication made in the twelfth or

the thirteenth century; but the mention of its name and contents by the

Muslim scholar Alberuni in his work, Indika; in 1030 A. D., and the

discovery of anthology of 477 stanzas of Bhagavata intitled Mukta-phala by

Vapodeva and commented by Hemandri, disposed of that absurd theory.

B) "what conclusive proof or need or validation or anything is there to

>conclude that the Bhagavatam is older than 1200 years old? "

But scholars like Mercie Elaide host that the Bhagavata is a least , if no

earlier, the 5th century. This dates was supported by many scholars like

Sambidanda and B. B. Majumdar. But let me communicated to you that there

are many historical evidences that put in doubts this modern datations.

2.-In his commentary on the Uttara Gita , Gaudapada, the paramguru of

Sankara, make references to Srimad Bhagavatam and quotes verese of it.

3.- The scholars from pasts centurys dated to Sankara in the 8 th A. D.; but

the historical evidences show by Dr. Prasada Gokhale from the New Brunswick

University show that Sankara lived in the 5th century B. C.

4.-In the last year, my findings in the works of Chanakya Pandit, suggest

that Him quoted Paraphrases of the Bhagavatam, that the computerised

statistics analysis appoint out that the works, like Artha sastra, Chanakya

sutra and Raja niti sastra, it has around of 13% of influences of the

Bhagavatam. Unfortunately it is in Spanish, if you know who can translate

this in English I can send you a copy. Also, this work was introduce in the

GUT library by my Godsister Kunti dasi. She is a Ph. D. student in Sanskrit

in the Berkeley University.

) "i dont think

>the opinions of a few gaudiya scholars, pandits, or saints who talk 800

>years later is very relevant to the issue...what more ancient proof is

>there...in addition, if, as mr thompson does, you choose to use

>astronomical references, then what proof is there that in later times"

5.-The proofs of Gokhale, disclosed that Chanakya pandit live around to 1500

B. C. And the Candragupta, Sandracuttus mentioned by Megasthenes, the Greek

historian, is the Candragupta Gupta and nor the Maurya.

All this vestiges it is a indication that ancient of Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Hoping that this information to help to you let me reamind like your servant

>If you have any substantial articles/information in this regard,

>please be so kind to send them to me.

My dear Prabhu. If you have who can traslate to the spanish, I can send

you more

information, But Sada-puta, Dr. R. L. Thompson shows that the mentions of

Polar star in the Bhagavatam never existe in the skay 11 centurys ago, But

there is not any Polar star in the sky in such times. The last Polar star

was 2500 b. C.

in the sky. Othe point is that I discoverd that Sarasvati river mentions

in

the Srimad-Bhagavata with brances to Gujarata till to west o Sind area,

coming form 2000 b. C, bacuase the Sarasvati river was drying in this

times. Only is flooding in the Himalaya and underground to day. Also the

concepts of Yugas o Divya Yugas in the this text, is found in the cultures

in the Old World like China, Egypt, Greeks, and Scandinaviam such peoples

comint form 3100 b. C to 1300 B. C. Also, other geography proof is the

mention of Flood. This phenomena appear only in very ancient books in the

Old World like Mesopatamiam Gilgamesh History, Amurabhi codice, The Hebreic

Genesis and Chinese arts legends from 2000 years b. C . I am working in this

research and I

found that the argument put by the modern scholars are very weak without

sufficient soundness and they are speculatives.

Hoping that this information will be good for you.

Your servant.
