Thanks Sy for that personal story. To me I love to hear anything
about Ganesh, so this helps me. I like to get different people's
perspectives. That reminded me of my original encounter with images
of Ganesh that followed me across America. I had mentioned this in an
earlier post. As I traveled across the country to take a new job in
Boulder, CO. I remember staying at a hotel that had a huge image of
Ganesh in the lobby. I remember paying for my room under that image.
Then, I had the best night's sleep ever. It was half-way between
Florida and Denver, sort of like a threshold. Anyway, it was the only
hotel I stayed at between here and there. Then when I got to Boulder
one of my girlfriends and her husband took me to this Indonesian
restaurant for my first meal in Boulder and we sat next to a huge
sculpture of Ganesh. I felt like a presence was leading me and
guiding me and even making me feel at home amidst great career and
socail change. Then the job ended up not working out and I had to go
back to Florida. We ate at that restaurant again, at the same table,
and I went back to that hotel again, and slept in the same room. It
was like everything was going backwards, but was the same, and Ganesh
was there through all the changes. I am a Christian. I do not worship
the Hindu gods. I do not do puja and I do not go to temples to
reverence their images. But nevertheless I know that God was with
me. Since then I have come to find out alot more about God through
the images and stories of Ganesh. For me he is alot like Jesus who I
believe to be an incarnation of God. Ganesh's ankusa recalls for me a
similar image of Jesus as a shepherd, who with his staff, pushes us
on through life. His bowl of sweets not only reminds me to be
childlike. Through the sankha call to prayer I am reminded of the
Jewish ramshorn which calls people to prayer in Israel. So, for
me,not being Hindu, I can see how God has made himself available to
me through Ganesh's many forms. Also, I don't know alot about the
milk miracle, but tend to believe in it.
