Dear all,We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.

These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant chanted " Hiranyaaya Nama " as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under water and enjoyed full freedom there.

Hiranyakshipu knew this and was very upset about their paying respect to Brahma instead of him. He cursed them that they would be killed by their own father in their next birth. Now, Kalanemi took birth as King Ugrasena's son Kamsa. These Shad-garbhaas (shad means six) took birth in Devaki's womb as Krishna's elder brothers and as soon as they were born, all of them were killed by Kamsa (who was their father Kalanemi in the previous birth.)

Seventh brother is Balarama and 8 th is Lord Krishna. Much later Krishna brought to earth all his elder brothers killed by Kamsa and showed them to His mother Devaki.

(Bhagavatham does not mention Kalanemi as Hiranykashipu's son. He is only mentioned as Asura.)

Dear Jayashankarji,

The first six children born to Devaki were mercilessly killed by Kamsa. When Devaki became pregnant the seventh time Bhagavan asked Maya to go and transfer the baby in Devaki's womb to Rohini' womb. Rohini was another wife of Vasudevar and lived in Gokulam where as Vasudevar and Devaki were prisoners of Kamsa and lived in Mathura.

Nobody knew about it and everybody in Mathura thought that Devaki had an abortion. This transferred child   grew in Rohini's womb and Rohini gave birth to a beautiful boy. Later Krishna was born and Vasudeva exchanged the children born to Yasoda (Nandagopar's wofe)and Devaki. So Krishna grew as Yasoda's son and the girl who was brought to Mathura disappeared from Kamsa's hand when he tried to kill her by striking on the rock.

Later Garga Muni came to Gokulam to do naamakaranam of both the children. Rohini's son was named Rama and Yasoda's son ( or we should say Devaki's son) was named Krishna. Because of his great balam or strength, he became Balarama.

To answer your question, yes, Balarama is the step brother of Krishna. They have the same father.

Regards and prayers

Dear Savitriji,

Technically the foetus from Devaki,s womb was transferred to Rohini's who was born as Balarama.

So the mother is Devaki and the father is Vasudeva though the baby developed in the womb of Rohini.Rohini was taken care by Nandagopar and Yasoda, Hence, Blarama and krishna grew up together.

Sreedevi

Dear Sreedeviji,

You are absolutely right. Foetus was born in Devaki's womb, but Rohini gave birth. So it is right to say that Balarma is Krishna's own brother. In the modern version we can say, Rohini is the surrogate mother. Thank you for pointing out that. Because of the Maya, Rohini and Yasoda brought up them up as their own children.
