Default Meaning of Jai? - 10-30-2001, 01:55 PM

Hi everyone and Namaste
Is salutations a good trananslation of the word Jai or is there a
more accurate defenition? Is Jaya different than Jai? Any info on
this would be much appreciated as we are thinking of using Jai as
a possibility for a baby name! Thanks, Barrie

"Jaya" (in Sanskrit), or "Jai" (in modern Indian languages -- local
variants include "Joi" and "Jey") originally meant <victory>.

Parvati Devi is often shown with two girlfriends named Jaya and Vijaya --
meaning The Victorious, and The Conquering.

Lord Indra's eldest son is named Jayanti, meaning Victor.

But when used in prayer, "Jaya" usually has the same connotation as
English "Hail."

I do not know the exact translation of Jai, but Jai Ma means Hail the Divine
Mother (Ma means mother, but when we sing bhajans, we usually mean the
Divine Mother). As far as keeping Jai as a baby name goes, I have a friend
whose name is Jaiganesh, who is called Jai.

Namah shivaya

'jai' actually means 'Victory' similar to 'Jaya'. So
'Jai Ma' will mean victory to the Divine Mother .

it can also mean 'salutations to Mother' or 'Hail
Mother'.

jai has always been a very powerful exclamation for me. i'm not sure
of the text book definition but it is a proclimation of victory, for
example one might shout it out after a hero comes home victorious
from a terrible battle.
