There's another translation of that verse, presented on

The translation "To see a light, no other light is needed" is incorrect.
Many stars have to form in a series, fusing elements starting with
hydrogen and exploding after a lifetime, before creatures composed of
the formed elements can evolve, actually seeing light and that without
light first (star light) no light can be seen at all.

Peace,
Jan

Good point Jan. Sri Ramana was simply indicating that Self-Knowing does
not require a medium separate from itself to know it self. The words
always fall short of Silence. As far as which translation is better, I
have no idea but got mine from the "Collected Works of Ramana Maharshi"
that is published by Ramanashram and it was translated by Professor K.
Swaminathan. Good enough for me! Also it made sense to me! :-).

I also understood what Ramana meant and knowing he expressed himself
concisely always, sought for the translation showing that beyond doubt.
I could have remarked as well that to see (physical) light, light (of
awareness) is needed.
