Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati: Nrisingha mantra

According to Fakir Mohan Das (1999) in 1881 Bhaktivenoda Thakura initiated his son, Bimal-prasad Datta (1874-1937), into the chanting of the Nrisingha and Hare Krishna maha-mantras.

Does anybody know what this Nrisingha mantra is? Did Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati offer it to any of his disciples? If so who?

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati gave the Nrisimha-mantra (found in several places, e.g. Nrisimha-tapani Upanisad, starting with ugra-viiram) to at least one more disciple: Sri B.H. Bon Maharaj. Bon Maharaj mentions in his diary that Prabhupada gave him the mantra at Ballard Pier in Bombay, 10th of April, 1933, just before Bon Maharaj & co departed for Europe. I do not know whether Bon Maharaj passed it on to his own disciples or not.

Srila Bhaktipramoda Puri Goswami's sisya GangAdhar in Amsterdam knows that one.

Srila Bhakti-vallabha Tirtha Goswami knows a few different ones.

Srila Bhakti-vibudha Bodhayan Goswami and Jagat may also know.

I have often heard the legend that Bhaktivedanta Swami gave a Nrisimha-mantra to his sannyasa-disciples until they came in touch with Gaudiya Math sannyasis and learned that the gopi-bhava mantra is given for a sannyasi. Then he changed the practice and began to give the gopi-bhava mantra as well.

Of course he himself had received sannyasa from a GV sannyasi so one would imagine that he would himself know the proper mantra to give.

 

Far be it for me to know. Just thinking that the word legend sounds a bit more like gossip.

Nrsimha Bija mantra

 

om kshraum

 

ugram viram maha visnum jvalantam sarvatomukham

nrisimham bhisanam bhadram mrtyu mrtyum namamy aham

 

'May my head be protected by the mooncoloured one, who is the greatest among humans.

My obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great Visnu, the fiery one, who's faces

are on all sides, the fearful one, Nrsimha, who causes the death of even death

personified, (or who can overcome death)'.

oM tattakA hAtaka-keshAgra-jvalat-pAdoka-lochana

-bhadrAdika nakha-sparsha divya-siMha nami 'stu te

 

"O my Lord, O transcendental Lion, I offer my obeisances unto You along with Srimati

Laxmi Devi. Sometimes flying in the sky, sometimes moving on foot, Your mane-hairs

blaze with golden brilliance. Your glance and touch of You nails are the source of all

world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that

by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in

this material world.
