I don't know about scriptures or acharyas' statements, but I do remember that there are a few devotional songs in Tamil that describe Krina's eyes as black. I don't recall the songs though. Most vivid descriptions about his blue-black complexion.

"Sri Radha-Krpa-Kataksa-Stava-Raja", verse 7 (song spoken by Lord Siva in a conversation with Gauri in the Urdhvamnaya-tantra)

mrnala-vala-vallari taranga-ranga-dor-late

latagra-lasya-lola-nila-locanavalokane

lalal-lulan-milan-manojna mugdha-mohanasrite

kada karisyasiha mam krpa-kataksa-bhajanam?

Your soft arms are like fresh, delicate lotus stems elegantly swaying in the waves. Just as a creeper dances in a gust of wind, Your restless bluish eyes flash an enthralling glance. Your charm entices Madana Mohana Himself to follow after You, and when meeting, You steal away his mind and then give him shelter in his spellbound condition - O Srimati Radhike, when, oh when will You bestow upon me Your merciful sidelong glance?

About blue eyes: Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada also had blue eyes:

there is one very special song written by Srila B.R. Sridhar Maharaja, "Sri Sri Dayita-dasa-dasakam".

This is an English translation of Srila Sridhara Maharaja's ten prayers

offered in the mood of separation, reflecting on the disappearance of Srila

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarswati Thakura.

8. I am possessed with the desire that you reveal your all-auspicious

divine form to this world. The unparalleled charm of your long, narrow,

bright, blue eyes simply mock the beauty of the crescent moon. Your teeth

possess an indescribable luster. You are gentleness personified. Your fine

countenance resembles a lotus flower decked with hundreds of petals. The

divine strength of your long graceful arms is matchless. Oh! With no

further delay, kindly accept this fallen soul as your servant. Oh Dayita

das, I am hoping against hope to be embraced within the fold of your divine

company.

There is also a reddish tint to some aspect of his eye. Here is something from Srila Prabhupada's commentary on Mukunda-mala stotra:

The present verse of the Mukunda-mala-stotra states that the color of the Lord's body is blackish, like that of a new cloud. Also, His body is very soft. Softness of the body is a sign of a great personality. The sastras state that the following bodily features indicate a great personality: a reddish luster in seven places--the eyes, the palms, the soles, the palate, the lips, the tongue, and the nails; broadness in three places--the waist, the forehead, and the chest; shortness in three places--the neck, the thighs, and the genitals; deepness in three places--the voice, the intelligence, and the navel; highness in five places--the nose, the arms, the ears, the forehead, and the thighs; and fineness in five places--the skin, the hair on the head, the bodily hair, the teeth, and the fingertips. All these features are present in the body of the Lord.

Here is another 'eye' question. A friend of a friend paints some very attractive pictures of Lord Jagannatha. The picture really caught my eye and at first I couldn't figure out why. Then i noticed that her picture had Jagannatha's eyes sloping downwards. Now all of the deities I remember in Iskcon have eyes that slope upwards. So I asked my friend and he said that in Jagannatha Puri, the deity eyes do indeed slope downwards. It was a small but fun detail. Can anyone confirm this?

Nice pictures Clare.

To me the upward sloping eyes make the Lord look happy - perhaps happy to see His devotees. While the downward sloping eyes make the Lord look sad - sad due to separation from His devotees.

I really enjoy the pictures I have seen of Manipuri deities. First they are very colorful, but also the eyes are very attractive. They are more asian, but give the deities a very nice look. Anyone with pictures of Manipuri deities?

Sri Sri Sri Jagannatha- Baladeva-Subhadra

-The Lord of the Universe-

<IMG SRC=http://homepage.ntlworld.com/clare.ross5/jaganath.jpg>

Their Lordships Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra

These famous Deities originally worshipped in the famous and ancient temple in Puri, India have come by Their own causeless mercy to grace the alter at Sri Krishna Mandir. Lord Jagannatha is Krishna, The Lord of the Universe and He is accompanied by His brother Lord Baladeva (the first expansion of the Lord and the bestower of spiritual strength) and His sister Subhadra (yogamaya – the internal potency of the Lord). These Deities are most unique for unlike the other deities, They have extremely large eyes and do not possess full-fledged limbs. According to the narration in the Vedic literatures, this feature is the result of the three personalities exhibiting ecstatic symptoms as a result of hearing the pastimes of Lord Krishna with the gopis in Vrindavan, from the lips of Rukmini devi in Dwaraka. Very significantly, Jagannatha Puri is hailed as the most suitable holy place for the age of Kali and as Lord Jagannatha, Krishna bestows His causeless mercy to the people of this age. Now by the mercy of the Vaishnava Acharyas, Lord Jagannatha has become an internationally worshipped personality and many Ratha Yatras (Chariot Festivals wherein the Deities of the Lord go out in procession) resembling the original one at Puri are being performed all over the world.

A friend, Dinesh Balakrishnan, recently did an animation of Lord Jaganath...(warning : this image flashes)also depicted with sloping down eyes.
