Over 500 years ago, the people living on the continent we now call the Americas discovered, much to their later regret, a lost European who thought he had landed on the sub-continent of India.

Rather than correct his silly mistake he and others took to calling the very diverse and unique natives of these lands Indians. Ah well what can you do?

However just for arguments sake I want to ponder if there might be a connection to be found between the Indians of America (or as some people say Native Americans) and the Indians of India?

With that in mind I redirect you to a web page I and another person have put together, it's not that I couldn't type it here, but it involves a lot of links* and so I think it works better there

* and frankly a promo for a mailing list we have also started to talk about the above.

India was not India before it was so called by British or europeans.

India has a very nice name called Bharath- kingdom ruled by king bharatha.

In both the continnents the names were given by the (then)mean minded european robbers. I don find any reason on the basis of these artificail names to connect the woods dweller red indians with the people of Bharath. Although everybody is related as everyone belongs to the Lord, else there is absulutely no remote connection.

According to some history books I read some time ago ...

The name India comes from Portugis who were the first Europeans to land in South India around 1400s. At that time, India was the main produces of Indigo colouring, used to color clothes which was a favorite in Mid-East at that time.

So, Portugis named this new land "Indi-a" because they get Indigo from this new land to bring back to Europe (among spices). And the name stuck every since.
