Who is Greater? Shiva or Vishnu?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Only god knows when this topic will end may be it will continue even after we are long gone. I'm sure the entire forum is full of the posts discussing who is supreme of Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu.

Upanishads declare both are one and Vedas also do so but not explicitly, and the whole purpose is to use human life wisely to get rid of birth and death cycle.

Great sages composed Upanishads and we are mere mortals, we can't even comprehend the knowledge they must have possessed in their lives.

There were instances where Lord Vishnu took help of Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva took the help of Lord Vishnu. It clearly shows both are equal and nobody is superior. They are just doing their duty.

What are you going to achieve by proving the supremacy of Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu. It will only satisfy your ego. We all know what Krsna says in Gita about ego. Make the most of your lives worshiping either of them and go back to Godhead.

It is merely ignorance on part of people to differentiate with siva and vishnu. Vaishnavites or Saivites is just a form of worship we take up. Let me make it straight.People daily chant Vishnu Sahasranamam and though they fail to see the names of Rudra and Sambhu in it. Are not they Shiva s names. And for saivites who KNow aout PASUPATHA yoga a very strict sect in saivites, the names of siva are given as:

SHIVA,MAHESWARA,RUDRA,VISHNU,PITAMAHA,SAMSARA VAIDYA,SARVAJNA,PARAMATMA!!!!!!!!!!!11

Is nt this extreme saivism and dont u find the name vishnu for shiva!

Both are one but they are different for the running of universe. One god divided himself into two extremities for the upliftment of the universe.

People wake up dont create theories see the VEDAS we follow them not our illogical humane thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Although the Upanishads say that there is no difference between Shiva and Vishnu, I want to know what you think. Is Shiva greater than Vishnu or vice versa?

Dear all

if you go back to history you may find that the sects Iyer, Iyengar and other subsects are of later period.

Though it seems sanskrit comes from Northern India, it flourished only from Kancheepuram, Tamilnadu. This place is where the language flourished and many scholars were born there,

At each point of time one "Mahan" will lead one sect and say it is the best. Say for example Sankaracharya preached one sect, Ramanuja charya preached the other and Madhvacharya preached entirely different.

Basing on their preaching people followed one sect and when another sage and preached a different they followed the other. So all sub sects are of later creation and there is only one that is “Brahman” the followers of Vedic rites.

It is very difficult to understand all the four vedas on which the entire Hinduism ( it includes, Buddhism, zoorastransim, Jainism etc. No one has read and understood all the four Vedas. It is said that Vedas are the result of Lord Narayana's breathe.

The Vedas are brought in a simplied form and the essence is brought in Upanishads. Even Upanishad, we cannot understand and so our acharyas followed on set of rules (smruti) and wrote commentaries.

But you see Mahanarayana Upanishad which says, Brahma is Narayanan, Siva is Narayanan and Narayanan is Brahma and Narayanan is Siva. So every thing is Narayana only and that is why it is said 'tad visno paramam padam' as ' the abode of Visnu who is Paramatma and parambrahmah. the abode is called Vaikuntha and a muktaatma attains Vikuntha loka.'

Even the Great sankaracharya used to recite always as “Narayana”. So Vishnu, Siva, Brahma and all other gods are the representatives of “Narayana” just like current Managers in offices. As there are so many alternate routes and modes available to reach a destination, each one worshiped one God and followed one Smruti.

“Sarvam Narayanam Jadhu”

All Hindus Unite.

vishnu is the Palak which means nurturer and shiva is the destroyer. it is shiva who brings new order to life by destroying the older one. our scriptures have different stories where vishnu regards shiva as supreme and shiva regards vishnu as supreme. but both have an equally important role to play in the cosmic order so it is hard to determine which one of them is greater.

The true form of God is love/compassion. Nobody who have written in this forum has could have seen who is greater or smaller. It is like 6 blind men trying to describe an elephant and each person claims a different description. God is one and universal and is the ultimate power in this world (Prema)

SHIVA is greater over Vishnu

1.all the gods thought that if atmalinga given by lord siva to ravana if worshipped by ravana , he may attain powers a lot (the whole of siva) -this thing shows that how powerful the siva was may give powers to ravana

2.(only vaishnava books say vishnu is supreme) but siva irrespective of shivate books was treated as supreme

3.vishnu got sudarshan chakra by shiva by offering his eye as lotus to shiva this shows how great siva is

4.the work of vishnu is given by SHIVA the god of the gods -when vishnu is small he does tapa for what to do .shiva came and said when time comes i will give word and shiva disappeared vishnu slept in the milkocean for thousands of yrs - this says that siva is supreme

5.vishnu and brahma war near atmalinga none were able to reach bottom or the starting / this symbolises siva is the high over all gods,

6.siva gave shapa to brahma that he will not have temples and pujas in worlds which is still followed

7.shivas family is highly posisioned in hindhu society

8.most of the demons who are uncontrollable are destroyed by shiva when vishnu asks to help

9.a supreme must see every creature as equal which is done by shiva but not by vishnu
