Was Karna the greatest archer?

i think karna was as good if not better. however mahabharata is somewhat intended to show the battle between good and evil, or right choices as opposed to wrong. in the end, their skill didnt matter, as god was with the one who made 'the right choice'. now that is arguable since karna was put into circumstances that lowered him. that being, he was humbled because of his adopted family, he did not receive correct teaching from a correct age, and had some of his powers removed by indra. id say karna is the greater of the two if the two were on equal footing, but unfortunately karna never was.

Karna worshipped Surya Devata, whereas Arjuna worshipped the Purushottama himself, the source of all devatas. Arjuna was wiser on that account.

Arjuna worshipped Purushottama alright ... but his spirituality is weak.

Many times, Arjuna had to call upon Sri Krishna to help things out, and many times, others have proven that their spirituality is stronger than his.

In one account I remember is when Arjuna boosted he could bring Sri Krishna to come to them (Pandavas having luncheon) and proceeded to meditated upon Sri Krishna. Sri Krishna didn't come to the end.

Bhima got up and said he will bring Sri Krishna here (after Arjuna failed). He didn't meditate or anything, he just sat down, flung his mace up and said "Krishna, if You don't come right this minute, I will be crush by my own mace." /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sri Krishna did come and saved him. This shows that Bhima's spiritual strenght is so strong, he was willing to put his life in the line for Sri Krishna. THAT is STRENGHT. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

In many way, Arjuna is what many Hindus are - unknowingly. They say they have faith but their faith is merely for their own usage.

I didn't know that story. But I don't think it fair to compare Arjuna with the present-day Hindus. Arjuna had the guts to fight as a true Kshatriya, whereas modern hindus are willing to surrender even before the battle begins.

Arjuna was so peace-loving that he was willing to die at the hands of the enemies. Modern Hindus, on the other hand, talk of peace so long as their sons and daughters don't die. Modern Hindus are so hypocritical that as long as soldiers are dying to protect them, they'll lecture everyone on peace. In short, Arjuna was willing to die for peace, whereas modern hindus are willing to let SOMEONE ELSE (soldiers) die for the sake of peace. Hope you see the difference in attitude.

It shows that modern hindus are not only cowards but hypocrites who want others to make sacrifices for them, instead of making self-sacrifice.

That's attitude I was referring to ... you just saw it in smaller scale and I did in bigger one.

What if modern Hindus also hypocrites who want God to make sacrife and protect them while they do not bother to do so themselves?

Do modern Hindus know about God?

Study Vedas? Too hard? How about Bhavagad Gita alone? That is a simplified version.

Do Modern Hindus know about Siddhars and the Sages?

And maybe, it is too much to equalize Arjuna to modern day Hindus, it is just my opinion. And for your information, I only look highly toward Bhisma, Karna and Bheema (and Sri Krishna of course) in the whole Mahabratha Epic (not to mention Lord Vishnu's pervious incarnations).

It is beyond doubt that Arjuna was the best archer and more importantly the best warrior of all times....Arjuna had alone fought the Gandharvas, Danavas, Nivatakavachas and the Paulomas, with whom no one could even think of fighting with a huge army, forget fighting alone. While Karna, or for that matter, no other warrior has achieved such a feat single handedly.

Ekalavya was the best archer, while he and Arjuna were studying shastra-vidya, but that does not mean that had not Drona taken his finger he would have been the greatest, because not all best students succeeds in life, a topper in school need not be as successful in his career. It is how we handle the opportunities and the difficulties in later life that brings the best out of an individual, who is equally capable.

Karna on the other hand was gifted since birth with kavacha-kundla, which cannot be pierced and before the Kurukshetra battle he got the invincible weapon from Sun God.

Arjuna never required such weapons, as he demonstrated in the battle between himself (as Vrinhala) against the whole Kuru army comprising of the Duryodhana, his brothers, Karna, Drona, Kripa, Bhisma...all of whom were chased back to Hastinapura, again, single-handedly.

As asked, why Arjuna disguised as Vrinhala during the battle with Kurus, even though the period of vanavas was over, is not because he was scared and nor to take an undue advantage by creating an element of surprise, it is because the Pandavas, had decided to go together to Hastinapura to claim their right at an appropriate day and time. Please take note that they are from a royal family and any important decisions taken by them are done in a appropriate manner, date and time.....also, while Arjuna left with prince Uttara, he only agreed to be his charioteer, since his brothers and King Virata himself (to whom they had decided to reveal their real identity first) were out of the kingdom, but after understanding Uttara's cowardice and seeing him fleeing the battlefield, scared of the mighty Kuru army, and with no alternative left, Arjuna himself chose to battle.....The Kuru army very well knew it was Arjuna and none else from the twang of his mighty bow - Gandiva and the sound of his Conch - Devadatta, and Arjuna himself admits his identity before the battle begins, after which Karna openly challenges him, only to be mangled in the heap of his own chariot and running away from the battlefield like all others.

To state that the Kurus came to battlefield unprepared is meaningless, because, no one comes unprepared to a battlefield. The Kurus, experienced in the art of combat and battle very well know never to underestimate one's opponent in a battlefield.

Karna was too much indebted to Duryodhana and blindly sided him even though Duryodhana was choosing the path of Adharma. If he were a good friend of him, he would have advised him to mend his ways. As a best friend you may lay your life for your friend, but you should always put your efforts to put him right. Instead, Karna supported all the ill deeds of Duryodhana, he was party to the shameful act of Draupadi Vastraharan, he was foremost in slaying the unarmed Abhimanyu, which was against the rule of war, and unworthy of a true warrior,,, this finally led to his end.......

4.

Further he was cursed by a brahmana that his chariot wheel would plunge into the land during the war

5. Kunti got a boon from him only to kill one of his son. Karna spared during the war saving it for arjuna .

Correction :

4. He was cursed that his chariot will stick in mud during crucial time in battle, not plunge.

5. Kunti devi asked him to use Nagaastra ONCE only, no more than that.

If all this couldnt have happened Karna would have been the un matchable.

Karna was the greates of the two , unfortunately he was with ADHARMA which made all his power go waste

It's not wasted ... in the end, Karna, NOT Arjuna who receive Lord Vishnu's Moksha. His sacrifice was not in vain. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Some people here have very little knowledge about Mahabharat.

Do you know what Krishna himself said about Kara? That not even he himself could've stood against Karna with his Shakti. That not even Indra himself could defeat Karna.

Do you know what Yudhistira, Krishna and Bhishma - all 3 said about Karna? That he was PEERLESS. That there was NO ONE in the world who could match him.

Can you grasp the meaning of that?

Do you know what was the only thing that Yudhistira feared all his life? Kara's superiority to Arjuna. Indra quenched his fear a little by begging for Karna's kavach and Kundala.

Do you know that even Arjuna himself was shown to be afraid of Karna multiple times during the war?

Do you know that Krishna himself feared at one point Karna was going to terminate everything in sight including Arjuna, that he sent Khadolkaja to get rid of Karna's Shakti astra?

Do you know that Krishna and Kunti - mother of all Pandavas knew that none of the Pandavas, including Arjuna, was a match for Karna that Kunti begged Karna for the favor not to use his extremely powerful nagastra more than once?

Do you know that in addition to that boon, Karna gave her the boon of sparing the life of all the Pandavas except Arjun? Do you know that he defeated them all yet spared them to keep the promise?

Do you know that Karna almost killed a desperate Arjuna before Krishna intervened and caused the sun to set?

Do you know that Karna almost killed Arjuna again with the nagastra, where once again Krishna saved his life? And Karna ket his promise that he wouldn't use it again.

Do you know that mighty Arjuna with Krishna at his side, couldn't do any serious harm to Karna even without his kavacha and kundala, shakti and nagastra? It took the one moment where Karna was unarmed, raising the chariot wheel, to Arjuna to triumph over the more powerful and superior Suryaputra, by cheating?

And yet, I can't believe there're people here who claim that Arjuna was this and that...The only time when Arjuna had ANY valid ground was when he used a sammohanastra in Virada which produced an intoxicating smell which affected everyone including Bhishma and Drona. During the Gandarva war, Arjuna had nothing to do with Karna because the Gandarva army could do nothing against Karna, not even scratch him, so they covered him by numbers of thousands and thousands that he drew them away to level the battlefield for Duryodhana and company, and hoped they could battle better with most of the army covering and following him - only, they couldn't fare any better. And the summohana at Virada - It's similar to them getting hit on pressure points and fainting during battle, which Arjuna suffered A LOT during the war, from Karna himself nonetheless....

As Bhishma rightfully said, Karna learned more Dharma than Yudhistira with his long life full of sacrifices and promises, and by being the danasheela, and he was more powerful than mighty Bhima, more skilled archer than Arjuna the Kireedi, more handsome than Nakula and Sahadeva, and fully deserved the title of the prime Pandava.

As Krishna rightfully said, Karna alone could've destroyed all hopes of the Pandavas even without his protective shield and immortal kundalas and the shakti and covered with curses. Imagine how mighty and skilled is the son of Surya.

It's not surprising really. Surya blessed Kunti saying that her son would be just as he is. As shown later on in the Mahabharat, Karna was actually 1/2 Surya himself, who divided himself into a portion into the person known as Karna, born with the natural armor and kundala made from amrit by the devamatha Aditi.

Many times when no one, save Krishna, Vidura, Kunti and Bhishma knew the sad secret of Karna, everyone praised Arjuna. But when they acknowledged Karna for what he truly was, the truth was spoken by every one of them - that Karna was PEERLESS, with no equal.

As previously stated, his sacrifice was not in vain, not only that but his sacrifice was necessary - a necessity of fate.

Karna was the balancing factor in the huge war. One Karna was enough to destroy the whole Pandavas, and one Karna was enough to destroy the whole Kauravs by joining their side. Yet it was fate that the mightiest warrior in Mahabharat be bound by curses and promises to lower his might in the battle, in addition to Krishna himself interveneing at many times, so that the Pandavas indeed stood a chance and things would proceed as fate would have it.

In the end, the ray of blinding light passed from Karna's body to the setting sun - returned to where it came from. The part of Surya that was in human form returned to the true form. Yudhistira who always feared Karna's superiority and in the end grieved the most for his death, was passified by the sight of Karna sitting along the adityas in his rightful seat in heaven, shining like all the suns together.

His human life is the tragic story of Mahabharat. He's the tragic hero of the whole thing. His might was acknowledged for what it was by everyone in the end, and the pandavas joined with thier elder brother in heaven, all 6 of them together.

Arjuna, even with the ultimate Brahmastra, the mighty Pashupatastra, the Agneyastra, and all the other celestial astras, couldn't harm Karna even once, ever.

On the other hand, Karna almost killed Arjuna many times, had the chance to do the same to the other 4 but opted not to, even without his Kavacha and Kundala, without the Shakti that was wasted on Khadolkhacha - because he was an honourable man, and kept the daana he gave to his mother. And yet, even in the end with virtually tied up, Arjuna could do nothing to him except when he was on the ground without weapon in hand.

Krishna knew it, and that's why at that precise moment he commanded Arjuna to kill him. There was no other way, for the son of Surya has no peer, no match in all the world.

Eklavya never had the chance to fully deveop his abilities. Drona's cruel trickery managed that. But it was shown from the very beginning at the tournament to the very end, that Arjuna would always be below his elder brother.

Dear All,

It was bheesha- He was referred to as the greatest warrior on Kurushetra. Arjuna didn't defeat bheeshma even once. He had to resort to using Shikandin as a shield so that Bheeshma would not attack back. So essentialy Bheeshma stopped aiming when Shikandin was in the charior.Only then was Bheeshma brought down. Krishna was earlier incenced enought to charge at him with Sudashana. Bheeshma, himself said said he cannot be killed. In fact, even within the mahabharata, Bheesma is referred to as the greatest warrior. Remember even the famed Parshurama, his guru admitted defeat.

As for who is a greater warrior between Arjuna and Karna, I have always prefereed karna for he appeared to show greater moral fibre than Arjuna amd he was certainly less privelaged. That said, there were several occassions when Karna did not shine. One was the battle with Arjuna on the final day of the excile. Arjuna defeats everyone, except Beeshma and mind you without Krishna's help. The second occassion was when Karna lost his fight with Chirtrasena, the king of gandarvas..and Duruyodhana was captured and Arjuna defeated Chitrasena and rescued duruyodhana. There were subsequent battles minor skirmishes during the war when Karna lost. When Krishna was accessing Karna's potential, he said that his only weakness was his compassion and forgetfullness. Even Bheehsma acknowledged that Karna was Arjuna's equal.I personally think that Karna, Arjuna and Drona were on par, but bheeshma was acut above. He never falterered

Most of your facts are wrong and your writings show a clear bias against Karna.

Firstly, Arjuna never ever defeated Bhishma..Just after the end of 13 years, Arjuna battled the kauruas, Drona, karna and Bhishma. Using a weapon which induces sleep he made everyone loose consciousnes except Bhismhma, who knew how to counter-act the weapon.

Drona, Karna, ARjuna had brahmastra but none of them used it. Arjuna used divine weapons in his fight with Karna, in fact both used, but it was threaten the world unlike Ashwattama who used his Brahmastra.

So all your arguments against Karna are incorrect.!

Next you said that Karna escaped only because Salya was a skillfull charioteer. Get your facts right. Salya was asked to taunt and demoralise karna by Yudhistra before the war began. Salya agreed to this and he left Karna when he needed him most. And besides the Mahabharata states that only Salya could match Krishna as a charioteer.

Three, the reason Arjuna killed Karna was because Krishna told me to. It doesn't change the fact that he was killed when he was weaponless. From Krishna's standpoint, it was a victory. But the victory was not fair.

Dear guest, again get your facts right.!

Both Arjuna and karna used divine weapons like agni astra and vayu astra. bheesma and Drona betwen them had the same science. Ashvattama used the narayana astra. Arjuna used the pasupata astra to kill Karna.

You speak of Arjuna's concern for the world. Wasn't he the one who burned down the Kandava forest ?

So remove your bias and be objective.

Respectfully, i disagree. In terms of skilled warriors the Kaurava army was superior. That was what worried Yudhistra and the reason why he sought the help/blessing of Drona, Bheesma and Salya before the war.

The pandava army had Abhimanya, pandavas, Gathocatcha as first grade warriors but they do not feature predominatly in hte 18 day war. Abhimanya of cos was fantastic but unfortuantely not experienced in war. Gathocatcha was powerfull only at night since he was a demon and he caused the greatest damage at night when their strength doubles.

If you read the Mahabharata carefully you will realise that Karna promised Kunti to spare four of her sons except Arjuna, thus she will have all her five children with either Arjuna or Karna. There was no instances in Mahabharata where he hesitated to slay Arjuna...don't make up your own stories...

Karna is said to be peerless because he was blessed with the Kavcha and Kundala at birth, which cannot be pierced by any weapon. Before the kurukshetra battle he was time and again defeated by Arjuna and to say that Arjuna was afraid of Karna is only a wrong and biased opinion. Nowhere in Mahabharata it is mentioned that Arjuna was afraid of Karna? Arjuna is the only one, amongst all the warriors, who have never retreated from the battle field. While Karna, once again not able to win against Arjuna in the battlefield got the Shakti Astra to slay him. The Brahmastra was never used by Arjuna on Karna.

Arjuna's slaying of Karna is well justified. In the first place though Arjuna never wanted to slay the unarmed Karna, but Krishna reminded him how Karna himself has used weapons against the unarmed Abhimanyu, slaying him, against the rules of battle.

Like Karna, who had the advantage of Kavacha Kundala, so also Bheeshma had an advantage. He had the boon of ending his life as per his wish...so no one could take his life, except that he/she can force him to take a decision by inflicting deep and unhealable wounds....Only Amba (reborn as Sikhandin) had received that boon from Shiva to slay Bheeshma& and Bheeshma had taken the vow not to use weapons against a person who was born female....Thus only Sikhandin (who was born female and later attained the male form from Yaksha), could have forced this to happen...not even the very Gods. Sikhandin was Amba in previous birth, who was forcefully, but mistakenly, taken by Bheeshma for marriage (not for himself though) even though she liked another person and her life was destroyed.

If Bheesma was really better, he could have defeated Arjuna, but it never happened, infact it was Arjuna who was always having an upperhand in the battle against him, except for slaying him, which was only to be Sikhandin.

**- That was Krishna's ability to wheel the chariot well...you should praise him and not praise Karna.....Karna's chairoteer had on numerous occasion helped him in retreating and saving him from the arrows of Arjuna... **

Actually you are totally wrong. Karna's charioteer Shalya, who was Pandavas' uncle had agreed to the pandavas that he'd try to insult Karna whenever possible, and he did exactly that, to lower Karna's morale to help pandavas. In short, while Arjun's charioteer helped Arjun, Karna's charioteer was helping Arjun and co. as well.

And every great man in Mahabharat praised Karna for who he was. Regardless of whether you like him or not, that fact cannot be changed. The whole kingdom was his birthright. Krishna, his mother and Bheeshma offered the whole world at his feet, yet he was respected by them even more because he wasn't tempted, and he kept his loyalty and did his duty.

There is something special about these 3 people - Bheeshma, Drona and Karna.

1. No one in the Pandavas could kill either of the 3, because all 3 of them were greater than them all.

2. All 3 of them were disciples of sage Parashuram.

3. All 3 of them met their end as a result of the Pandavas cheating, because they couldn't win straight on.

Among these, Bheeshma and Karna have even more similarities.

Both were born with blessings that made them virtually immortal. While Bheeshma could die only when he wishes, Karna was immortal and invincible against all celestial weapons with the armor and earrings that were part of his body.

The difference is, Karna gave away that part of his body to Lord Indra of the Gods, knowing he was trying to protect Arjun. He, and if you follow South Indian mythology - Mahabali, are the only 2 characters from whom a Deva begged for something.

In addtion, what seperates Karna from the other 2 great warriors, is that while they were cheated once, he was cheated no less than 6 times for this particular battle.

1. The curse of Parashuram, thinking Karna was a Kshatriya since he was a mortal enemy of kshatriyas. Karna at this time didn't know he was a kshatriya. This curse was a blessing for Arjuna, protecting him.

2. The curse of the brahman, as a result of accidentally killing his cow. Though an accident, he recieved the curse of the chariot sinking in the field, once again, a blessing for Arjuna, protecting him.

3. Indra begging the armor and earrings. Karna had the combined qualities of all 5 Pandavas, being the eldest of them, and was always loyal and gave anyone, anything they asked. Knowing everything, he gave them away.

4. Krishna disarms him by informing him about the pandavas being his brother. This caused his hatred for the pandavas to be destroyed, and it's said that afterwards, his love for the pandavas rivaled that of Bheeshma's to them. Yet he kept fighting just like Bheeshma, to fulfil his duty.

5. Kunti disarms him and safeguards her 4 sons, by the boon given by Karna that he would not kill any of them except Arjun.

6. Using Khadotkaj to steal Karna's shakti gained from Indra to protect Arjuna. Khadotkaj's duty was fulfilled and Arjun was saved.

And at last, even with all the above 6, none of them, even Arjun could kill Karna. Yet Karna with the curses and the knowledge that he's fighting his brothers, was capable of killing all of them. He spared all save Arjun, and Arjun could not defeat him except by cheating somehow.

Krishna knew this, and when the curses took effect, he knew that the only way to kill Karna was when he was unarmed, and the moment was taken advantage of.

And as for the above post -

***If Bheesma was really better, he could have defeated Arjuna, but it never happened, infact it was Arjuna who was always having an upperhand in the battle against him, except for slaying him, which was only to be Sikhandin. ***

You're wrong. All 3 commanders of the Kauravs - Bheeshma, Drona and Karna were better than all Pandavas. Bheeshma didn't defeat Arjun because he took the oath that he would not kill any of the Pandavas. The only times when he seriously fought, Arjun was so helpless, that Krishna was FORCED to break his oath of not taking a weapon - twice.

***

Wronng again. Karna was said to be peerless AFTER he GAVE AWAY his kavach and Kundala, and proved his might.

He was never defeated by Arjuna except when using the sammohanastra (sleep inducing arrow) in Virada, which affected everyone else including Bheeshma, Drona etc.

Yes, it is said at least twice that Arjuna felt fear seeing Karna in full slaughtering form, in the full translation. Not just that, but Krishna himself feared that Karna might kill everyone among them at one point, but he knew that fate decided it was not to be. Such was his might. Krishna was afraid for Arjun yet another time, due to Karna's shakti weapon, for which he used Khadotkaj.

It is no opinion, yet alone biased or unbiased. To say otherwise would be what's your opinion.

Arjuna retreated, or to be technically correct, Krishna retreated the chariot from Karna more than once during the war. Get your facts straight instead of what you see in movies or serials.

Again you show your ignorance by stating blatant lies...Karna was always able to win against Arjuna, even with the multitude of fate's curses upon him...He got shakti astra to prevent Indra's name be shamed due to the shameless act he performed by begging off his armor and earrings. EVEN WITHOUT shakti, he was unbeatable, and it took treachery to kill him, just like how it was for Bheeshma and Drona.

And for your last point, wrong again. Brahmastra was used by both Arjun and Karna, they used it against each other, neutralizing both.

He is the tragic hero of Mahabharat. He was greater than all 5 Pandavas, yet lived a life of insults and pain. He suffered for the sins of his mother. Yet, the curses and misfortunates that embraced him were part of his fate, necessary to secure Arjun's victory. It's the same with Bheeshma. He was greater than all Pandavas, yet it was in his fate to be defeated, to secure victory for the Pandavas.

Both Bheeshma and Karna, after fulfilling their duties on earth, returned to where they came from. Bheeshma's curse that made him live as a human on earth was lifted, and he returned to being a vasu in heaven. Karna, who was part of Surya on earth, returned to the sun. The Pandavas met their elder brother in heaven, sitting among the suns.

If not for misfortune and fate intervening, each one of the three - Bheeshma, Drona and Karna alone, were enough to defeat the Pandavas and kill them all. But that was not to be. Despite their might, it was necessary that the side which was fighting for Dharma, was meant to be victorious.

Each of those 3 knew they were fighting on the opposite side, yet they stood loyal, knowing their defeat was fated. That is why even though they were on the wrong side, they are respected by all.

Arjuna is the best there, not only because of his skill, but because he walked with Krishna, whose very consort is victory. Arjuna had what I would call the total package which is better than super strength or superior skill. Just as a boxer of lesser skill may use not only his skill but his ring tactics to defeat the other boxer.

Wherever there is Krsna, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the SUPREME ARCHER, there will also certainly be OPULANCE, VICTORY, EXTRAORDINARY power, and morality. That is my opinion. [bg. 18:78]

The two evidence make clear that karan was better then Arjun

1) Before the war begin Lord Krishna invited HANUMAN to protect the Arjun and sit on his RATH to make sure that no one cause harm to him,

Inspide of that karan Completely destroy Arjun's RATH and make it push to same distance that was impossible in the presence of Lord krishna and Hanuman, but Karan was manage to acheive that.It showed that his simple arrows had greatest power as compare to others warrior includin Arjun, imagine what happen to arjun in the absence of krishna and hanuman.

2) When karan tryig to pull out his wheel from pit, Krishna said to Arjun "This is the best time we have to kill Karan, he is without weapons, if you allow him to pull his wheel of rath then many Arjun will not be able kill him.

Karna was not the greatest archer.Singlehandedly arjuna defetaed karna, drona, bhishma, aswathama, kriba in the war in vrad desh with utharakumar as his chariot rider. The entire gaurava army lost the war then.

Arjuna's war with karna in gurushekthra was no different. There arjuna could have killed karna immediatly had he used the pasupathasthra which lord shiva gave him.But Arjuna never used those holy weapons for concern of the world.

Karna escaped only since salya drove the chariot skilfully. And arjuna could not answer only one weapon of karna. It was the weapon which Indhra gave karna.Had arjuna used pasupathasthra karna could not have answered it too.

Arjuna would not have killed karna who was stranded in ground. But he was so enraged on karna who cut the bow of abimanyu, from behind during the death of abhimanyu. He took revenge for that then.Had the war continued karna would have been slayed soon.

Karna forgeting his divine weapons, getting curse all were results of his misdeeds.Arjuna too did not use his divine weapons against karna. So it was a level playing field.Karna insulted salya and as a result salya walked away.If my enemy is a fool,is it my problem?
