Free Will

I found this question on a website....can anyone answer this?

What does it mean to say that the Self or God is free? Does He have free will? Free will implies multiple options and freedom to choose. Does He have several options? Why does He choose one of them? In that case is He so ignorant of the future to have to choose from his options? What governs His choice? Nature or Prakriti? Is He a slave to His Nature? What desire makes Him choose? If He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, why does He have to have options, choices, freedom to choose or not to choose?

Why? why? why?

Does it not all add up to saying

that such a God is a bundle of contradictions?

What does it mean to say that the Self or God is free?

•••self is not free, or better, his freedom comes by god... god, being omnipotent and the source of all powers has the total freedom to act

Does He have free will?

•••god yes

Free will implies multiple options and freedom to choose. Does He have several options?

•••infinite, variety is infinite

Why does He choose one of them?

••he has no reasons behind.. otherwise the reasons would be god,,, he is the source of any reason

What governs His choice? Nature or Prakriti?

•••god is not conditioned, we are conditioned by nature or prakriti (material nature) that are god's laws

If He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, why does He have to have options, choices, freedom to choose or not to choose?

•••yes, god, have infinites options, choices, freedom and freedom to choose and not to choose... otherwise how can he be god without total freedom to act?

Why? why? why?

••because god is freedom and the source of freedom

Does it not all add up to saying

that such a God is a bundle of contradictions?

••please explain better you theory, because the concept of god as a free individual is very easy to understand even if intellectually

<< What does it mean to say that the Self or God is free? >>

god is totally free,

and he give freedom to each soul,

with advise as to how to choose wisely.

a soul - jiva will suffer for his unwise exercise of free will.

<< Does He have free will? >>

yes. for god, he wills, and it happens.

no choice of his has any risk for him.

<< Free will implies multiple options and freedom to choose. >>

yes, for us.

<< Does He have several options? >>

no, he doesnot have to weighn one option agaisnt other.

he wills and it happens.

some very advanced saints also get this siddhi.

then they really become very careful as to what they will.

<< Why does He choose one of them? >>

we cannot question god. god is god.

he wills and it happens.

god is free from fear or risks.

<< In that case is He so ignorant of the future to have to choose from his options? >>

future is what god chooses and wills.

this does not mean we have no freedom either.

you have freedom to jump in fire.

but the fire has dharma to burh you.

only in some miraculus situation the fire may choose to not burn you.

<< What governs His choice? >>

if something governs his choice, then he is not god.

<< Nature or Prakriti? Is He a slave to His Nature? >>

no. krishna has said:

maYa'dhyakshena prakriti

sUyate sacharaAcharam

however, when god incarnates,

he has option to behave as if he is under teh prikrit, just as a king has option to play to his child as if he is an ordinary person.

<< What desire makes Him choose? >>

he does not choose. he just wills.

basically he alwasy desires that each jiva come to him.

he loves them all.

<< If He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent, why does He have to have options, choices, freedom to choose or not to choose? >>

again. he does not chosoe, he wills,a ndit happens anytime he chooses, eveninstantly.

<< Why? why? why? >>

just as i said.

<< Does it not all add up to saying

that such a God is a bundle of contradictions? >>

no.

but it may take several births for you to understand it.

hope it hepls.

Hare Krishna,

Omniscience and free will of Bhagavan:

The classic atheist attack on theism.

Omniscience means Bhagavan knows everything that is to happen. It implies therefore that Bhagavan does not choose among different things. Now one has to also understand that Bhagavan is PERFECT or Purnam. It means HE has no needs or desires to be fulfilled. So HE does not need to choose. But Bhagavan is Omnipotent. Everything happens as per HIS WILL. Is it not ? So the WILL is back again. Here WILL means not a choice but Bhagavan's own NATURE and not HIS needs.
