Dear friends, I'd like to know what the meaning of Govardhana Puja is. I know that Lord Krishna lifted up the Govardhana hill but I'd like to understand what "lesson" one can learn from this event.

The story is as follows. The villagers in Vrindavan were preparing sacrifices to Lord Indra to supply water. But Lord Krsna ordered the people not to perform this ritualistic sacrifice. In punishment, Indra showered down torrential rains. To protect the villagers, Lord Krsna lifted Govardhana Hill as a type of umbrella.

The lesson to be learned is that we should worship the Supreme Lord, the cause of all causes. If we perform sacrifice for Lord Visnu there is no need to perform sacrifice for the demigods.
