All glories to Lord Nrsimhadeva the half man half lion incarnation of Lord Krishna. He appeared to save the great saint Prahlada Maharaja from his demonic father Hiranyakasipu.

Appearance of Lord Nrsimhadeva

Hiranyakasipu by performing the rigorous austerity of standing on the tips of his toes for one hundred and twenty five years became so powerful that the demigods prayed to Lord Brahma to keep him from destroying the universe. Hiranyakasipu due to his austerity Lord Brahma offered Hiranyakasipu his hearts desire.

Hiranyakasipu requested that he should never die. Lord Brahma explained to him the even he must die that his life was only four million three hundred thousand times 1000 times 30 times 12 times 100 times 2 years. So Hiranyakasipu demanded that he should never be killed in the day or in the night to which Lord Brahma agreed. Hiranyakasipu then stated that he should not die on land or in the air or even in or on the water, to which Lord Brahma agreed. Hiranyakasipu having received this promise became very bold and stipulated that he should not be killed by any man or beast. Lord Brahma again agreed.

Hiranyakasipu still not satisfied which what he had received from the Lord, then stated that he could not be killed by any weapon. To which Lord Brahma very will then left before.

After receiving these gifts became more Demonic and began conquering the material universe. With each new victory and increase in the power the Demigods became more and more worried. In time Hiranyakasipu had a son Prahlada who was a great devotee of Lord Krishna.

Even as a small boy of five he would preach of Krishna. This preaching infuriated his father. When his father demanded to know what this foolishness was what was this Krishna. Prahlada explained that because his father was too attached to his own sense gratification, he was determined to deny Krishna's existence.

Due to this he could not understand even if he took lessons. To understand Krishna one must first give everything to Krishna then Krishna would reveal himself. Hiranyakasipu became so angry he ordered Prahlada to be thrown in to a circle of cannibals.

When he was thrown to the cannibals Prahlada began to chant and the cannibals had no power to harm him. His father said perhaps he needed a little cooking then he would be fit to eat and ordered that Prahlada be thrown into the scorching heat but because he was chanting Prahlada was unharmed.

Seeing that Prahlada was not harmed by the heat Hiranyakasipu ordered Prahlada thrown into the freezing cold. But again because he was chanting Prahlada was not frozen by the cold. Seeing his was not harmed he ordered that Prahlada be taken to a small island to endure a huge hurricane. But he kept chanting and he was protected by Krishna's holy name.

Hiranyakasipu seeing that none of these things did any good, threw Prahlada off a cliff, but due to his chanting Krishna caught him and Prahlada was not harmed. Infuriated Hiranyakasipu demanded that Prahlada be placed before his fierce elephant. But the Lord was in the elephants heart and he ordered the elephant to place Prahlada on his head and parade him around.

When this did not work Hiranyakasipu called for his guards to throw Prahlada into the snake pit. The pit was filled with venomous snakes but because Prahlada was study in his faith and continued to chant the snakes could not harm him.

Since through all this Prahlada was not harmed, Hiranyakasipu thought he must have some mystic power. He pretended to be sorry for trying to harm Prahlada and invited him to lunch. In desperation, Hiranyakasipu poisoned Prahlada's food, with enough poison to kill hundreds of full-grown men.

Rather then eating his food Prahlada first offered it Krishna and it became prasadam and as pure as God and free from all poisonous effects. When the food had no effect of Prahlada Hiranyakasipu became so enraged he lifted Prahlada above his head and smashed him to the floor.

When Prahlada still was not harmed Hiranyakasipu demanded to know where he got his super human powers. Prahlada replied from the same place as Hiranyakasipu did from God. Hiranyakasipu demanded to know what was this God where was this God. Prahlada explained that God is everywhere that everything came from God.

Hiranyakasipu despite all that had happened did could not believe and began pointing to things demanding if they were God. Hiranyakasipu demanded if God was in a pillar. When Prahlada said yes, he was. Hiranyakasipu stated that he would kill him then using his mace to smash the pillar.

As he did Lord Nrsimhadeva, the half man, half lion incarnation of Krishna appeared from the broken pillar and pounced on the shocked demon. Nrsimhadeva stretched Hiranyakasipu across his lap and with his long nails, he ripped apart the demon. Hiranyakasipu died instantly on Nrsimhadeva's blood drenched lap.

He was killed neither on the land, sea nor in the air but on the lap of the Supreme Lord. He was killed neither during the day or the night but in the twilight. He was killed by neither beast nor man, but by the lord's lotus hands and was kill with no weapons but with the nails of Lord Nrsimhadeva.

Thus Hiranyakasipu's benediction from Lord Brahma remained in tact and he was killed by the personification of fear, God himself.

Although both Krishna and Narayana are one and the same, in Narasimha avathar, prahaladha prays to the Lord as Narayana and not as Krishna. The Lord is being called as Krishna only from Krishna Avathar and not before that.

I hope you know the ten avathars of Lord.

Meena, Mathsya, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Balarama, Krishna, and Kalki.

So the name Krishna referring to Lord came into being according to puranas is in use only later. Its nice that you people are posting nice information and spread Shree Krishna's philosophies, but please dont change the puranas and the hierarchy of the appearance of the Lord.Regards

Shyam

It seems the Bhagavatam agrees that it is quite permissible to call Prahlada Maharaja a devotee of Sri Krsna [1.12.25]. In fact, over and over again the Srimad Bhagavatam refers to Prahlada as a devotee of Krsna, and also of Bhagavan, Govinda, Kesava, Visnu, and the son of Vasudeva. We must remember that Krsna does not always refer to Lord Krsna who spoke to Arjuna (although Sri Krsna in Goloka Vrindavan is that same Lord Krsna of Kuruksetra). In addition we must remember that the avatars continue to appear every mahayuga over and over again in Krsna's Nitya-Lila.<blockquote><center>dhRtyA bali-samaH kRSNe

This child will be like Bali MahArAja in patience, a staunch devotee of Lord KRSNa like PrahlAda MahArAja, a performer of many Azvamedha [horse] sacrifices and a follower of the old and experienced men.

PURPORT

Bali MahArAja: One of the twelve authorities in the devotional service of the Lord. Bali MahArAja is a great authority in devotional service because he sacrificed everything to please the Lord and relinquished the connection of his so-called spiritual master who obstructed him on the path of risking everything for the service of the Lord. The highest perfection of religious life is to attain to the stage of unqualified devotional service of the Lord without any cause or without being obstructed by any kind of worldly obligation. Bali MahArAja was determined to give up everything for the satisfaction of the Lord, and he did not care for any obstruction whatsoever. He is the grandson of PrahlAda MahArAja, another authority in the devotional service of the Lord. Bali MahArAja and the history of his dealings with ViSNu VAmanadeva are described in the Eighth Canto of SrImad-BhAgavatam (Chapter 11–24).

PrahlAda MahArAja: A perfect devotee of Lord KRSNa (ViSNu). His father, HiraNyakazipu, chastised him severely when he was only five years old for his becoming an unalloyed devotee of the Lord. He was the first son of HiraNyakazipu, and his mother's name was KayAdhu. PrahlAda MahArAja was an authority in the devotional service of the Lord because he had his father killed by Lord NRsiMhadeva, setting the example that even a father should be removed from the path of devotional service if such a father happens to be an obstacle. He had four sons, and the eldest son, Virocana, is the father of Bali MahArAja, mentioned above. The history of PrahlAda MahArAja's activities is described in the Seventh Canto of SrImad-BhAgavatam.

Jaya Prahlada Maharaja. Jaya jaya Nrsmha !

haribol !

There are no words to express the attitude that god shows towards the devotee.

Especially when in Narasimha avatar , Narayana showed that he can be so simple to his devotee.

Prahalaadha was asked by his father Hirayana kasibhu ,

"Where is your lord Nayarana ? "

Prahalaadha said " He will be there even in piller and in dust "

and then Hiranya kasibhu contiuned

" Is he is there in this pillers around me ?"

Now Narayana the prama purusha doesnot know to which piller this small guy will point out , I have heared in one vedantic lecture that , Narayana took efforts to stay in all the pillers avaialable in the palace , not for any thing else , but to keep up the words of his great devotee.

He is simplest of all things for his devotees , He is there here and everywhere.

Lets sing together !

Hey Govinda Hey Anantha Nandha Gopala (2)

Modhana Murali Dhara Shyama Gopala (2)

Sundara Giridhari Natavaralaala Swami Natavaralaala (2)

Depends on where you are. You would need to check the Vaisnava Calendar for your part of the world. I am in the western US and the calendar tells me the 14th however, if you are in India, for example, it would be the 15th. Goes by moon phase not actual date.

Will the Narasimha chaturdashi be on the same day in Europe as in India? If the fast is done unknowlingly on 14th in Europe, what are the repurcussions? Does it need to be done on 15th as well?

Hare Krishna!

bhagavate narasimhaya namas tejas-tejase avir-avirbhava vajra-nakha vajra-damstra karmasayan randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa om svaha; abhayam abhayam atmani bhuyistha om ksraum.

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nrsimhadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demon-like desires for fruitive activity in this material world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our ignorance so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existence in this material world.

Any devotee aspiring to be free of material desires should offer his respectful prayers to Nrsimhadeva as Prahlada Maharaja did in this verse. (Bhag. 5.18.8. See also 5.18.10 and 14)

yadi dasyasi me kaman

varams tvam varadarsabha

kamanam hrdy asamroham

bhavatas tu vrne varam

O my Lord, best of the givers of benediction, if You at all want to bestow a desirable benediction upon me, then I pray from Your Lordship that within the core of my heart there be no material desires.
