Not a stupid question at all! It is a brand of vegetarian meat substitute

made from a fungus. Doesn't sound very appetizing, but it's great -- better

texture than a lot of soy products. It contains no soy (but does contain egg

whites so not vegan). http://www.quorn.us/

I like to use the naked cutlets (fake chicken) cut-up in casseroles. They

have a breaded cutlet that fixes my fried chicken cravings. Their meatballs

are good, and their grounds (like ground beef). I know lots of people on

this list served the Quorn roast for Thanksgiving (as opposed to Tofurkey).

I used to eat Quorn before I became vegan, and it's very tasty.

Remember, " fungus " isn't a bad thing. Fungi include mushrooms, yeast,

and the molds that make tempeh and gorgonzola so tasty.

I have a lot of fun teaching about the Kingdom Fungi to my high school

biology students. Like any other big group of organisms, it has members

we like and members we don't. I go through photos of yummy things, such

as truffles and bread, then hit them with pictures of gross fungal

diseases. They love the grossout stuff, but we also talk about Oregon

industries that depend on fungi, such as our beer and wine makers and

our Oregon cheeses. Also, no plant on earth can survive without fungi,

which exist in the soil. Even bryophytes -- plants that live on " air " --

need them. They make nutrients accessible to plants that couldn't be

taken in otherwise.

So, give Quorn some respect. Fungi rock!
