Avocado browning question...sandwich ideas?

Rate this topic

This may be a stupid question (but then I believe

there are no stupid questions), but how long does it

take for an avocado to become brown?

I am visiting my grandparents on Saturday. They have a

house on a river in NJ and I was going to pack myself

a nice little picnic to bring out there. I was

browsing VegWeb for sandwich recipes and found some

great sounding avocado ones. Should I make the

sandwich in the morning before I go since avocados

brown?

I'd like to make something the night before so I can

just pick up and leave as soon asI wake up Saturday

AM...any good " pack and go " sandwiches with few

ingredients?

I think avocados taste fine after they brown--is your

concern about looks, or is the avocado unhealthful

when it browns? I've never had any trouble....

My thought is the taste. They still taste ok? I'd

really like to do more with avocados but the browning

always concerns me.

When I travel with an avocado sandwich, which I am

about to go make, I put everything together except the

avocado... and I bring along the intact fruit and a

knife.

What do you put in your avocado sandwichs? I like, on

wheat bread, ripe avocado, spread, not sliced, cheese,

thin sliced tomato, thin sliced onion, thin sliced

mushrom, sprouts, and a few shakes of Spike.

To keep from browning when I make guaquamole, I use

ripe easily mushable avocado, chunky Pace picante

sauce, lemon juice and the avocado pit, cut in half...

until serving.

Y'all do know that, and they make lovely tall leafy

plants, to grow an avocado plant, there is no need to

stick tooth picks into the pit to root it first. Just

plant it... plant them. Don't give up; keep watering.

:^)

Avocados brown almost instantly. You can sprinkle the slices with a

bit of lemon juice, but the browning doesn't change the flavor or make

it dangerous to eat, it just doesn't look pretty.

You could bring the avocado with you with a knife and put the slices

on when you're ready to eat.

I love avocadoes!!!

they do start to brown very quickly, though

(within minutes of being cut)

you can take the avocadoes with youand cut them there, and have everyone put

them in their sandwiches, or as a side thing like a pickle

or you can prepare all the ingredients and just have everyone choose what they

want and put it together themselves!

the only pack and go sandwiches I can think of are cheese and soymeat sandwiches

or pb and j

sandwiches with vegetables will definitely suffer flavor-wise, as the veggies

will start to wilt, and the bread will get soggy

hope you have a nice picnic!

I was flying yesterday and knew I wouldn't be able to find anything to eat

around the airports and such that wasn't crazy expensive. I made a huge salad

with Avacado on the top the night before (since we were leaving at 3 am) and the

avacados were not brown at all! It was in an airtight container so that is

probably the key!
