How to stay away from overeating nuts and seeds?

Hi,

 

I feel that I am overeating nuts because I feel my stomach is really

heavy the next day. All this overeating started since I decided to

quit eating grains. I used to eat sprouted buckwheat with raisins and

that used make me feel satisfied. Is it the carbohydrate that was

keeping me happy? Now, no matter how much fruit/veggies I eat I still

feel hungry and crave for nuts/seeds. I usually end up binging on nuts

in the evening, and feel horrible the next day.

 

Should I be eating more starchy food? like Bananas and Carrots? Any

suggestions? Can you share your experiences with regards to stay away

from overeating nuts and seeds?

Sweet fruits are our friends. Eat lots of them all through the day,

then your veggies and salads in the evening. I've been doing this for

almost two years and I hardly ever get hungry. I have to go without

nutritious, delicious, easily obtained, and reasonably priced. They

can also be fixed in a variety of ways so I never get tired of them.

Hi Ramesh,

 

I completely agree with Tommie. Fill up on delicious fruit! Bananas,

mangoes, dates, and melons are all very filling and satisfying!!!

Hi Tommie,

I couldn't help wondering what recipes you like with bananas? Also I have a

couple of recipes that require freezing the bananas first, I wonder if freezing

alters the enzymes the same way cooking does? and if not then why not?

Hi Audrey,

 

Eating how many dates at a times is healthy? I can't stop myself from eating

10-15 dates at a time. I wonder if that is too much sugar.

 

What is a good food group to mix with Dates so we don't overdo them?

Dear Ramesh,

 

I used to eat FAR too much " raw " almond butter. What's worse, I used to eat it

with honey,

or on bananas (sweets+fats=digestion turmoil!). Plus, the almonds in the " raw "

almond

butter I was buying were deifinitely not soaked, and possibly not really raw

either :( I

eventually just got over that phase though--nuts slowly lost their appeal and I

found

myself wanting more greens and veggies...but I have to say, it was an expensive

and

bloating phase that I wouldn't wish upon anybody else.

In preparing raw food for other people who are used to eating cooked food or are

just in

the midst of a transition to raw foods, I have noticed that, as you pointed out,

starchy

foods do seem to greatly diminish the desire for nuts and fats. Here's a recipe

I created

that is very filling and satisfying but minimally fatty:

 

" Cozy Acorn Squash Soup and Crackers " serves 2-3 people

1 acorn squash, peeled and chopped into pieces

2 tbs raw brazil nut oil, or raw almond oil, or raw macademia oil, or 1/2 cup

soaked brazil

nuts, pine nuts, almonds or macademias

* Remove seeds from squash and place on dehydrator tray, sprinkled with salt.

* Process until smooth, adding a little pure water to facilitate processing.

* Add in sea salt, black pepper, ground cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon to taste.

You can spoon some of this onto a dehydrator tray to make crackers. Refrigerate

the rest

of the squash purée until mealtime. When you're ready to eat, pour the purée

back into the

processor, pour in some warm (105-110 degree) water and process until smooth and

slightly warm and tasty. If the crackers and seeds are ready (15 hours, about),

sprinkle

seeds on top of soup and serve soup with the crackers.

 

OK, it's a bit complicated but so worth it. My point is: yes, starches help

diminish cravings.

They're natural serotonin-boosters. But cooked food consistencies also help with

cravings--mushy and dried consistencies, especially. You can make purées out of

yams,

squashes, carrots, yucca, jicama, all that good starchy stuff.

 

Another thing: have you just recently started eating raw? At first our bodies

are so used to

feeling heavy and bloated that we will stuff ourselves to create that

uncomfortable feeling

that we're used to experienceing after a meal. If so, don't worry at all, it

will pass.

 

Yet another thing: maybe your body just needs a lot of nuts and seeds right now.

It's

possible. Just make sure you're soaking everything and try not to eat them with

fruit or

sweeteners!

 

One more: promise yourself to only eat when you are truly hungry, to eat slowly,

in small

bites, chewing each bite lots and lots and lots, and pausing to check how you

feel in

between each bite, in a state of awareness of what you are putting into your

body and

why. If you eat this way, you will know the exact moment at which you have eaten

all that

your body wants you to eat of whatever you're eating, and you will not feel

stuffed or

heavy.

Yup, if you're overeating dates too--10-15 dates contain a crazy amount of

sugar, you

know--I would suspect that your serotonin is low.

 

Eat raw starches for an immediate serotonin boost: yams, squash, carrots (carrot

juice with

ginger is my favorite!) etc.

 

And get your Omega 3 fatty acids! They will stabilize you so you will have fewer

cravings.

Flax seeds and/or eventually, a piece of sashimi-style raw wild-caught salmon,

tuna, or

mackarel. I don't wish to shock anybody here with this info--I realize most

everybody here

is vegan--but, in the name of science, I must admit that I have found that I get

all edgy

and experience severe fat cravings about once every 4-5 months, which it feels

no amount

of nuts/seeds will satisfy, then I have one small piece of raw fatty coldwater

wildcaught

fish, and I feel great again. I wonder why this is...

Yes, I am a recent raw foodist and also I am " vata " body type. They say

typically vatas crave fatty food probably because they are on skinny side. So I

am going to experiment with carrot juice with ginger.

 

Is there any simple way of eating yam and squash with no elaborate preparation?

Hi, I'm Thintap from Love Food Lane. I work with

Storm. Simple, quick things you can do with yams:

Cut them into skinny slices and enjoy them as

" chips " ...for a dip, try blending yams, olive oil,

garlic, sea salt, curry and a few carrots. It takes

approximately ten minutes at most to do. Cutting up

yams into tiny pieces and adding them to a simple

salad is nice too. I'll ponder this some more.

I'm also curiious about your commment on your

Ayurvedic type. I think I may have a similar body type

as well. I weigh 155# and stand at 6'5 " , though I

feel quite healthy.

I use bananas for my base for my green smoothies, too. My favorite of

all time is bananas, mangos, and spinach. Just be careful of your

combinations if you want them to digest with no problem. Bananas are

sweet so they combine well with other sweet and sub-acid fruits but

Runestar,

I failed to address your question about freezing bananas. To tell you

the truth, I don't know whether the enzymes are altered or not but

eating frozen food isn't optimal. If I have to freeze something, I

thaw it before eating or using in a smoothie. I don't like really

cold foods, anyway, unless it is exceptionally hot weather. Once in

awhile, in the summer, I'll have something frozen like mango sorbet.

I would use Udo's Oils over any animal product. Supplement with that!

Hi Ramesh,

 

Anything we eat should be in moderation. I firmly believe that you can't eliminate one group of food totally. You have to reduce the portion size. I love dry fruits but it is not as healthy as fresh ones. These days vegetables consumption should be priority one, then comes fruits, carbohydrates, proteins (plant is better over animal protein), Fats are essentials too, like Omega-3 fatty acids.

 

There are good fats and bad fats, like wise there are good carbs and bad ones too. I prefer whole grain/multi grain compared to white bread.

 

If you happen to like Dates & dry fruits then just take 1-2 dates chop 'em into pieces and garnish 'em on your salad. Always start with veggies then carbs and then proteins. Some cultures insist on having some dessert/sweet before starting your meal that way you are satisfied and rest of the meal will help keep insulin rush busy.

 

Best of all its very important to stay quite, pay attention to your food and chew it few more times to enjoy it thoroughly.

almost two years and I hardly ever get hungry. I have to go without

food for an extended period of time to feel true hunger. Bananas are

nutritious, delicious, easily obtained, and reasonably priced

hello ramesh,

 

when ever you crave to eat nuts drink water...

 

use it as a diversion. you can also try carbonated water if you want for a change. add lime to water , make it different each time you have a craving and soon you will lose the zeal to eat nuts.

Hi,

 

I feel that I am overeating nuts because I feel my stomach is really

heavy the next day. All this overeating started since I decided to

quit eating grains. I used to eat sprouted buckwheat with raisins and

that used make me feel satisfied. Is it the carbohydrate that was

keeping me happy? Now, no matter how much fruit/veggies I eat I still

feel hungry and crave for nuts/seeds. I usually end up binging on nuts

in the evening, and feel horrible the next day.

 

Should I be eating more starchy food? like Bananas and Carrots? Any

suggestions? Can you share your experiences with regards to stay away

from overeating nuts and seeds?

I like nuts and seeds. These are a good source of proteins. You should eat raw nuts. Nuts contain rare amino acids that are destroyed in cooked protein. Seeds are good source of essential minerals and beneficial oils. As with nuts, do not overeat. You should eat fruits and salads.

There is no harm in consuming nuts or seeds since they are considered quite healthy as well as nutritious. Many peoples are advised to consume dried fruits including nuts and raisins to stay fit. But anything in excess can be really fatal for your whole body.

You need to consume these foods in moderate amount. Try to include fruit juices, soyabeans, etc in your diet.
